Oops...the IDF has admitted that there was no fire from the school they shot at and the footage of the gunman in the building was from 2007; the slaughter continues.

Statistician I guess you don't understand the usage of quotations.

I meant to put "lazy French" in quotations but I am correct in my explanation of the philosophical differences. Catholicity is a disincentive to work hard but to compete with the "hard working" protestant countries there pulled ahead of Catholic countries, the Catholic philosophy regarding work was more or less abandoned. However, aspects of the differing Christian philosophies still run deep in the local cultures. "Why work hard if you have to give your money to the church." Generally, the cultures in Catholic countries does not make people feel guilty if they are not working and more sympathy is shown towards poor people who have an equal chance of getting into "heaven." And to this day people in countries with predominantly protestant based cultures feel guilty about taking a day off and tend to have harsher attitudes towards poor people because the underlying Protestant culture, even if most people have never been to a church, dictates that the poor people are bound for "hell." I'm not really saying French are lazy compared to Americans. I meant that there is an image of French people being lazy because even if they do work there butts off they feel no guilt at taking a holiday and going to the beach whereas Americans tend to feel guilty for taking a day off and are shocked by people who do not feel guilty for taking a day off.

All leaders say these kinds of things, no different than Obama proudly stating that the US is the greatest country in the world or Brown commenting on how other countries need to follow the superior British democratic system. I'm not the least offended by Aso's comments, he's probably just trying to raise the pride of the nation in tough times. Yes, he is fundamentally wrong but no more so than Harper claiming Canada is without question the best country in the world.
Even within Christianity their are stark differences in basic philosophy. The underlying philosophy of Catholicism is that humans are sinful and that the only way to heaven is to "pay" tithes to the church to have one's sin's absolved, a disincentive to work; lazy French. The Eastern orthodox church believes that God is talking to people all the time and instructing us what to do but only a few chosen people can understand him so people should obey the instructions of the chosen few that can understand God, even if the orders from the chosen few are downright crazy, a basis for the soviet system. The underlying philosophy of Protestantism is that God determines one's fate at birth but he will show a hint of one's final destiny during life; that hint being money, a real incentive to work hard, thus the "Protestant work ethic."

Who knows, since Israel did not open up the border in accordance with the cease fire the only way Palestinians could get anything besides the bare basics was to smuggle things in through tunnels. Don't get me wrong, I am no friend of Hamas but this Israeli action will only serve to radicalize the entire region and will if it doe manage to get rid of Hamas, an even more radical group will rise from the ashes. I bet I have seen 20 interviews of some Israeli official blaming Hamas for breaking the ceasefire and the fact that Israel broke the ceasefire is never mentioned. Hamas is bad but sorry, I cannot trust the Israeli government or any other government that runs countless spy networks in my best friends house (USA).

Hold on, let me remind you that Hamas was elected and the USA funded Futah to go to war with Hamas. But I would agree peace was an option Hamas did not take because peace does not get you elected. Same thing in Israel, peace gets you assassinated war gets you elected. Rabin tried peace, won the Nobel Prize and then was killed by a Jewish terrorist.

Well under 50% of Israelis think there is any strategic value in what their politicians are doing but like most people they too rally round the flag and their politicians when they are "at war." Peace doesn't get you elected in Israel, Palestine or anywhere else.

I think Israeli politicians are worried about the election and are going after Hamas for political reasons not for strategic reasons and it is a mistake, I feel. Hamas was hanging themselves with their own rope. If they had been left alone a little while longer the Palestinians in Gaza probably would have gotten rid of them themselves. Hamas fires rockets to gain political support. Palestinians will "rally round the flag" when under attack. Both Israeli politicians and Hamas politicians gain from the conflict.

Shin Bet, Israeli security agency, created Hamas to get rid of the more secular PLO in the hopes of Hoodwinking the US by turning it into a religious war. Even the US would not sit by while Israel killed refugees but it is a different story if they are killing "Islamists." If the people of southern Israel are angry at having glorified bottle rockets launched at them, while then they should be pissed at their own government for helping to create and FUND the beginning of Hamas.

shams It seems to me that the initial attack on the graduation ceremony was not a target of opportunity. I assume that the time and date had been set well in advance and that Israel knew when and where it was and timed their attack to kill as many Hamas as possible in one shot. Anyway, there is one lesson Palestinians can learn, if they fight they can hold on to their land. Over on the West Bank where the Palestinians are milder, they are losing a bit more land every day. And the lesson for Israel is that if they can pacify Hamas, they can slowly and surely divest the Palestinians from their land.

Yes I know but it could make some sense if the goal was to draw out Hamas and then kill them all. Once they have been drawn out they are easier targets and fewer civilian casualties. I'm sure there are Israeli spies in Hamas, have they been egging on Hamas to lure them out? I'm surprised at how few civilian casualties there have been and how well targeted the Israeli attacks are.

Does Israel set up the Palestinians by funding the rocket launchers as an excuse to bomb them?

I think Japan has enough experience building airframes to produce its own fighters but Japan has chosen not to because it would be a threat. Buy American weapons and sell them cars, lets get some trade going.

Bobbafett In Israel Jews make up about 75% of the population but the total fertility rate for Jews is 2.69 and the total fertility rate for Muslims is 4.03. The clock is ticking.

No, I don't suppose Israel is going anywhere, it has been there for thousands of years, but time is on the Palestinians side. What happens when then non Jewish population of Israel is 50%+1? I don't suppose many Israeli Arabs are eager to live like people do in Gaza but a non Jewish Israel will probably vote to merge with what is left of Palestinian territories and form one country and will probably change its name to Palestine and the chances of a bloody civil war would be quite high.

If only it were that easy superlib. Israel says it wants peace but their actions have never shown it. Palestinians have nothing to gain by their actions but inaction results in more loss. This problem would never have gotten this far out of hand if Israel had not over reacted to the more or less peaceful Intifada which may I remind you was a reaction to the Israeli Iron Fist policy and statements by Israeli leaders supporting a creeping process of de facto annexation. The settlers were moving in and pushing Palestinians out. The Palestinians have not gained a darn thing by attacking Israel but at least they have been able to resist the Israeli policy of annexing all their land.
