@smithinjapan Yes! How much are we overpaying for the temporary housing?
It would have been much more efficient if the government had just handed a bundle of cash to the victims and let private industry do what it does best, provide the right products in the right place and the right time and right price. I am guessing a good number would have just taken the cash and moved to Kyushu.

Obama is certainly beatable if the republicans get out of the baby boom trap. The next US presidential election will be the first one in a long time when the baby boom generation and older will be outnumbered by younger voters. The baby boom generation have done a lot to destroy the US. They liked cheap public education when they were in school and government services when they didn't have to pay for them and since they entered the labor force have forced via the ballet box politicians to cut taxes and government services except what will benefit them like pensions and healthcare for old people.
Now that they have left a lake of red ink and are outnumbered younger voters can force politicians to finally make the baby boomers pay their way through an increase in the retirement age, reduced pensions and higher medicare costs.
Any credible republican candidate that offers to clean up the bloody mes left by the baby boomers can win.

However, the earthquake has created opportunities for a lot of companies. Toyo tire must be pretty pessimistic but at the same time Yokohama tire with factories in Aichi and Hiroshima must be optimistic about taking market share so easily.
I wish there was a regional break down on business sentiment; most in West Japan are probably confident. There is likely to be a transfer of economic activity away from electricity challenged Kanto to Kanto and Kyushu.

I have a question, perhaps the JT collective wisdom knows the answer.
Why does East Japan use 50 hertz and west Japan 60 hertz?
It is probably the lowest time of the year for electricity consumption in Kyushu but there are a limited number of frequency converter stations so Kyuden cannot use its ample capacity to supply Tokyo.

I am surprise that there are not a lot more cases like this in Japan as so many families pour all of their time and money into the oldest child and ignore the younger child.

The Egyptian army is hardly a rag-tag horde of terrorists; they are a professional US trained army with a well defined command and control structure.
It is not the same outfit that produced the likes of Mubarak, it is modelled on the best army in the world. The reason they never shot at protesters was because of the superior training they received from the US; never fire on unarmed peaceful protesters.
To suggest that they are anything other than sincere is equivalent to branding the entire US army as terrorists.

@Smorkian I guarantee you that a part time teacher does not pay out that kind of money unless he is selling the images, ergo he would need a model release.
