"American leaders tend to reflect their mindset and collective IQ level, that is why we see leaders like George Bush. I submit that with non Americans being able to participate you would see an overall rise in the IQ level of the average voters which would no doubt transfer to the quality of those elected"

LOL. Think about the most admired and powerful American companies - Apple, PnG, IBM, Disney, Boeing, HP, Dell, Cisco, Dow Chem etc. - and the money to be made on Wall St or even as an entrepreneur and then consider:if your kid was 26 or 27, fresh out of grad school and smart enough to write his own ticket for an American Dream your generation could scarcely imagine, would you steer him/her towards a career in politics?

One more facet of American exceptionalism: most Americans (conservatives at any rate...) do not expect (or want) the same things from their leaders that citizens in other countries do of theirs.

Some of the replies to this survey basically amount to an admission by Euros, Canadians and some of the other Commonwealth citizens that participatory democracy is moribund or dead where they come from, hence the obsession with US politics.

    I'm luvin it.

Voters be damned, the party must unify behind the bright shining fraud with the most liberal voting record in the Senate.

Not exactly making a very good case there...

"The Sadr City clashes sharply increased last month’s death toll among Iraqis, which totaled 1,073 people, according to government ministries. They included 966 civilians, 69 police and 38 soldiers."

Sorry, but this represents a sharp decline in the violence, if we use as a metric the loudly-trumpeted, oft-cited Lancet figguhs (figures) produced, by pure coincidence, weeks before the US presidential election of 2004.

    Tragic, sick stuff.

What kind of "religion" could make killing others a sacrament? And how in hell could they carry this out on their co-religionists, celebrating what nearly all cultures regard as the sacrament of marriage?

"Bush's mission to be the worst president in US history and a known scum of the earth was accomplished long before that banner displayed it for the media."

    Really making sense there, smith.

Bush is one of only 15 men elected to two terms as president of the most powerful nation on earth and probably in all of history.

I personally can't say I am one of those voters who put him in that category, but I do enjoy the effect he has on the America-obsessed.

"When they are fighting al-Qaeda, though, they are fighting people who weren't there before we ventured into Iraq."

By gum, sezwho, I do believe you have been caught prevaricating.

    Again.

Zarqawi was in Iraq after leaving Afghanistan in 2001. This is well-known, but the Left just keeps reconstructing their narrative about Iraq:

"bush wants to steal all a duh oil. "

"bush needs a war to keep the dollar the world's main currency"

"America are fomenting civil war so they can like, divide Iraq."

And now that those have been shredded it's this line about no Al Qaeda in Iraq till we went there.

If you're going to admit to AQ's existence why is it you can not take them at their own word?

Zawahiri and bin Laden have both said Iraq is the most important battlefield.

Betzee quotes Canadians for an article about American energy policy.

dxxjp has been in the ME too long and apparently gone native, parroting the conspiracies the locals are so fond of.

Sushi sake can only come with denials and silly taunts.

Here is another link, to another article, by an American, and one who has researched the subject:

"It may surprise Americans to discover that the United States is the third-largest oil producer, behind Saudi Arabia and Russia. We could be producing more, but Congress has put large areas of potential supply off-limits. These include the Atlantic and Pacific coasts and parts of Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico. By government estimates, these areas may contain 25 billion to 30 billion barrels of oil (against about 30 billion barrels of proven U.S. reserves today) and 80 trillion cubic feet or more of natural gas (compared with about 200 tcf of proven reserves).

"What keeps these areas closed are exaggerated environmental fears, strong prejudice against oil companies and sheer stupidity. Americans favor both "energy independence" and cheap fuel. They deplore imports -- who wants to pay foreigners? -- but oppose more production in the United States. Got it? The result is a "no-pain energy agenda that sounds appealing but has no basis in reality," writes Robert Bryce in "Gusher of Lies: The Dangerous Delusions of 'Energy Independence.' "Iraq bloodshed in April kills 1,073"

A mere 1, 073 for the month of April ?

    Cahn't be.

Lancet figguhs (figures) published in 2004 showed that there were a thousand Iraqis dieing every single day - 600,000 dead in the first 18 months of Bush's War for Oil! that has brought gasoline down to 30 cents/gallon in America, wot?

A figguh (figure) of 1,073 for an entire month (and the dead mostly insurgents)is pro- surge propaganda of the vilest sort.

It's so easy refuting Jean Colmar and grsmaz, it's embarrassing:

NAZI stands for "Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei".

    Everybody knows this.

You may as well deny that Mein Kampf was ever written or that the Holocaust ever occurred.

Germany should make the book available.

On this point I agree with Ms Colmar, whose native France recently held a very controversial and unsettling photo exhibition which completely destroyed the widespread, self-serving and ridiculous myth that Parisians never complied with their Nazi overlords or in tortured conscience chafed under their rule.

However, the notion that Hitler was right wing is the real reason the book should be made available.

He was a socialist, basically a Marxist. He admitted as much. It is the biggest lie of the Left and the defeated, discredited "progressive" crowd that Hitler was of the right.

It is being exploded in America ( Jonah Goldberg's best-selling Liberal Fascism ) and it is time Europe faces the historical facts:

"Contrary to what most people think, the Nazis were ardent socialists (hence the term “National socialism”). They believed in free health care and guaranteed jobs. They confiscated inherited wealth and spent vast sums on public education. They purged the church from public policy, promoted a new form of pagan spirituality, and inserted the authority of the state into every nook and cranny of daily life. The Nazis declared war on smoking, supported abortion, euthanasia, and gun control. They loathed the free market, provided generous pensions for the elderly, and maintained a strict racial quota system in their universities—where campus speech codes were all the rage. The Nazis led the world in organic farming and alternative medicine. Hitler was a strict vegetarian, and Himmler was an animal rights activist."

The Mahdi Army is getting routed. More disappointment for the anti-liberation crowd.

    "Mahdi Army Fades Away"

"April 28 , 2008: After a month of fighting, the Mahdi Army has disappeared from the streets of Basra, the largest city in the south. The army and police are everywhere, and people are providing information on where Mahdi Army personnel are hiding out, and the locations of their weapons caches. Up north, in the Sadr City section of east Baghdad, the Mahdi Army is still fighting hard. But the army and police have the upper hand, and are pushing the Shia militiamen back block by block. Mahdi Army leader Muqtada al Sadr has responded by threatening to order his men to go after American troops if the government does not back off. That's won't work, because the Mahdi Army is not particularly skillful, and not very united either. He recently ordered his troops to stop fighting Iraqi soldiers and police, and concentrate on the Americans. The Iraqi security forces have not reciprocated, and continue coming after the Mahdi Army.

"The dozen or so factions of the Mahdi Army vary in their loyalty to Sadr, or to political solutions. Several of the Mahdi Army factions are basically criminal gangs masquerading as religious zealots. Sadr denies he is a pawn of Iran, but as Mahdi Army houses are captured, more Iranian weapons and equipment show up, as well as religious propaganda from Iran. "

Text from Bush's Rose Garden Address :

"One of the main reasons for high gas prices is that global oil production is not keeping up with growing demand. Members of Congress have been vocal about foreign governments increasing their oil production; yet Congress has been just as vocal in opposition to efforts to expand our production here at home.

"They repeatedly blocked environmentally safe exploration in ANWR. The Department of Energy estimates that ANWR could allow America to produce about a million additional barrels of oil every day, which translates to about 27 millions of gallons of gasoline and diesel every day. That would be about a 20-percent increase of oil -- crude oil production over U.S. levels, and it would likely mean lower gas prices. And yet such efforts to explore in ANWR have been consistently blocked.

"Another reason for high gas prices is the lack of refining capacity. It's been more than 30 years since America built its last new refinery. Yet in this area, too, Congress has repeatedly blocked efforts to expand capacity and build more refineries.

"As electricity prices rise, Congress continues to block provisions needed to increase domestic electricity production by expanding the use of clean, safe nuclear power. Instead, many of the same people in Congress who complain about high energy costs support legislation that would make energy even more expensive for our consumers and small businesses. "

"As for a connection of Hitler (or Mein Kampf) and the Muslims, I don't see it."

    You don't look for it.

Hitler had great admiration for Mohammed and Arab Mohammedans.

Judging from the popularity Mein Kampf enjoys to this day in the Muslim world it's safe to say the respect was/is mutual.

His Jew hatred is beyond doubt.

sushi sake wrote:"The No. 1 reason Congress is polling so low is because Bush's flailing vetoes are stalling legislation that will benefit Americans."

If his vetoes are "flailing" (?) shouldn't it be easy - and worthwhile - for the Pelosi-led Congress to challenge him more often and in wee bit stronger form than with "symbolic resolutions"??

I mean, Bush is a "lame duck," has been since Jan 07.

Why can't "liberals" bring about the changes they promised?

Pelosi said folks paying 2.00$/gallon for gas was something they would change, off the bat.

Are the America-obsessed here going to argue gas is actually cheaper since the Dems won control of Congress?

No, it's sushi who is flailing here, like his boy Barack.
