"Despite the partnership with Wal-Mart, Seiyu has remained in the red in recent years. Its group net loss totaled 20,931 million yen in the year that ended in December 2007 although the figure was better than the preceding year’s loss of 55,792 million yen."
No surprise as Wal Mart has bought into the hype that Japanese customers are "different". I say baloney. Start stocking the shelves with the same products found in the US and sit back and watch the wealth accumulate ! Trust me, McDonalds, Levis, Nike, etc never bought into the hype. They produce the same products in Japan as they do in the USA. Wal Mart needs to get their act together and start loading the coolers with American beef and cheese nips !

I dunno about this. I talked with my folks stateside. They said these complaints are obviously isolated. Afterall, these are just the opening ceremonies and a good portion of the USA was still asleep ! Boy, leave it to the editors of Japantoday to find a minor story and blow it out of proportion. Try not to swallow the hook to deep, it's really a non issue. NBC has more live televised coverage than Japan, and you don't hear the Japanese complaining.

I saw this on the news last night. In short a few burgers will go up a mere 10 yen, so what. This is a far cry from the 70% to 100% price increases I've seen around Japan since December of last year. You gotta ask yourself, how is it possible, with transportation prices skyrocketing, that McDonalds is able to limit it's price increases to so little. Fact is, McDonalds has one of the most streamlined distribution networks in the world. If only other Japanese companies worked as efficiently.

The only thing the females are letting down is their bust line ! The summertime in Japan brings out the skimpy clothes, the wet t-shirt look via the sudden rainstorms or by simple sweat, and salarymen spending too much time at the rooftop beer gardens. Lemme see, short skirt, see through sweat soaked t-shirt, and one anhibriated drunken slob... yep, trouble !

possum, excellent post,
"Soaring food prices I understand. Tokyo is just too expensive considering the small quantity and poor dining conditions one must endure. Ex, screaming kids, loud music, shouting waiters etc."
I feel your pain. It is virtually impossible to find a quiet romantic dinner place without being forced to pay an arm and a leg. Most family restaurant chains are noisy, poorly staffed, and simply uncomfortable. Throw in the poor service and well, the results are pretty clear. I'd suggest that Japan's restaurant association re-train their waiters and waitresses to offer better customer service. For example, customers should not have to holler across the room for service, the staff should be more conscientious. Get rid of the "do-it-yourself" nomihodais. Waiters and waitresses should be doing this work. Offer up larger portions of food ! Look, we know the stuff is coming in from China anyway, so stop stiffing the customer. Put smoking areas in the back of the restaurant. Why is it everytime I enter a restaurant I have to pass through the smoking to get to the non-smoking ? McDonalds Japan is notorious for this. Basically, restaurant chains in Japan have to admit that customers would rather stay home and cook for themselves than deal with the unpleasantries of the current family restaurant environment.
