Altria: Are you kidding me? The J-companies have always been protected by the government. Access to cheap loans and grants is the backbone of Japan Inc. I think we need to ask how many industries are we willing to let go. Is semi conductors next? what about Boeing, caterpillar, etc. Do we just say of that's OK let it fail. Then we really have to rely on imports and other countries, not to mention all the research that goes along with these industries. Like one article stated they are looking into battery technology of the auto industry. If that goes so will the interest in that. Its ok we will just rely on the rest of the world. I don't think we can let that happen. We already have in many industries and look where that's gotten us, Huge reliance on imports.

I also agree, the GM boss should be canned, Ford is doing better but I would put him a warning, and Chrysler's head is new so i think you need to give him time. The US auto industry forsaken the car market years ago. I think its time for new leaders with a clear vision of the future of automobiles.

Japan seems to be able to do whatever they want and people don't say a word. If this was the US whaling there would be protests in the cities all over the world, newspapers and tv shows would be denouncing these practices. For some reason Japan has always done what they want in the face of everyone else and there is little to any retributions that they face. Why is that? Money?

yuriOtani: No the secret to the Japanese auto industry like all of the J-industries is not the ability to change, How long have you been in Japan? Change is very slow to come about. What they do here is standardize, they use a lot of the same parts for all the cars. The same cruise control system on the cheapest Toyota is on the most expensive. That plus decades of access to free to cheap loans not having to pay health care or retirement costs getting free OT hours, and lets not forget NOT having to answer to an shareholders and finally the exchange rate. I am sure others companies wish they had 1/3 of their profits just from the exchange rate like Toyota WAS enjoying. Look at them now they are running scared without that free money. It would be a shame to have no choices. Like in cameras. Most are made here in japan so they are basically the same. i am sad to think the same could happen to the auto industry. being here in Japan and seeing all the same boring cars go by everday is a glimpse of what the future could be like.

Rodney King the Japanese had the cell phone with the camera because the French guy that invented it was given a bunch of cash to be partners with a J-company so they could be the first to have it out and say Hey look at how advanced we are! Anyone that knows anything knows that Japanese companies come up with very little.

Loans, ok free money No. I just dont want the world to be dominated by the Japanese motor industry, I know they already are, sure they make good cars but like everything in Japan its the same BORING. I like to have a choice, something that the Japanese people have very little of. I think you need competition, look what no competition has done here. So if they will agree to do something other then the nothing that they have been doing I am ok with it. Plus other countries like here in Japan the industries have always relied on free money or very low interest loans how do you think they have survived for so long, that is also one reason why its hard for the US guys to compete, along with exchange rates, legacy costs that no other companies has to deal with, come on Toyota makes 1/3 of its profits just from the exchange rate, that's free money, I wish we had that.

Thats a good one. After decades of following the Japanese are going to take the lead in something, what a joke. The Japanese don't do anything until its already been done, then turn around and say Hey look what we did!.
