smithinjapan and tkoind - you are right on. Say what you want about the cause of these kinds of crimes, but this can't be repeated enough: "Japan has GOT to stop pushing little girls as sexual objects..."!

I, too, have visited that onsen many times. My wife and I have been there in the middle of the night and even watched the new year's sunrise from there. I've never thought of it as a dangerous place. Then again, they are never dangerous until something like this happens. Such a shame.

techall, I'm with you on this one. He was out of line. I'd like to ask for some accountability on the part of these drunk guys, please.
UsagitoSaru - "... stupidest thing i have ever read" Get with it. You getting hugs from your friends is completely different from what happened here.
SimpleLife, As for why it took so long, I am guessing that the police took their sweet time following up this accusation (as usual).

I get the world domination idea, but I always wonder how much of the news propaganda is representative of the public and how much is just to get more viewers. After all, it is easier to get people involved if they think they are part of a cause or a team. I'd hate to think that NHK's version of reality is an accurate depiction of what Japanese society wants. Do Japanese people really want to see headlines like "日本vs世界"(Japan vs The World)?

I am with you. I don't know why so many of these things happen here.
I do know that there are certain precautions that do not seem to be taken. Every morning I have to watch elementary, junior high, and high school kids walk along the side of a busy street with nothing more than a white line protecting them from the traffic. Every night I see kids riding bikes or walking in the dark because there is poor lighting over student walkways and cycling roads. With all of the kids that travel to and from school on foot, I am always surprised that there aren't more of these weirdo attacks. What can we do to make neighborhoods safe for our kids ? My child is not old enough to go to school yet, but I am seriously worried about what to do when she is. I don't want to overprotect her, but I don't want her to have to be the victim of something like this...

Pathat said, "If she can back on top of her game, fine, if not she'll have plenty of other things to do with her life in a few years."
I agree, but these are going to be some long years for Mao. She has been completely involved and very competitive in skating since she was 14. Nothing else she does for a while will be nearly as fulfilling.
Personally, I hope she does come out of her slump. I have enjoyed watching Mao do her thing, for years. Besides, she is the only one who really seems to hold a candle to Kim Yuna and it is not the same without her.

I can't believe a parent would allow this kind of thing to happen and then add, "I didn't take my eyes off her the whole time". I hope she is haunted by those images for the rest of her life.

the culprit(s) should have hung around and waited for the target, just to be sure they wouldn't hurt any innocent people... not that I condone this behavior. To quote Chris Rock, "I'm not saying he shoulda done it, but I understand."

Yelnats, I'm with you. Something doesn't sound right... "The girls were not injured when they were found, police said." Weeks later (if at all) we will find out what really happened to the girls. It seems unlikely that 4 girls would just hang out with a stranger overnight and not put up a struggle, scream, or something.
