The correct response to incidents like these is not to bring in excuses galore, but to offer a full apology. The pro war crowd also needs to learn this, to offer regret, not make excuses. Fact is troops can ill afford to allow these "friendly fire" incidents to pile up…

There's just probably too much resistance from the general public to such a move. At any rate the SDF would probably be doing missions similar to those done in Iraq, not combat oriented but more peace keeping and building infrastructure (much to the mockery of the misinformed here).

Not much. I can already guess, since he is so 'hawkish,' that he will as per the routine alienate his asian neighbors with annual visits to Yasukuni, insensitive statements, etc.
