Do you think the jury system, which will be introduced in Japan next year, is the best method of determining guilt or innocence in the courtroom?

What kind of question is this...?

Do they obviously want people to say NO...?

Of course it's NOT the BEST, but it's much better than what they have in place now...

Once they get the Jury system, they need to take a serious look at their Laws, particularly the rights of the accused and their system of appeals...

Yea, they did their job a little too good.... If I (or any of the people I have worked with) happened to be on duty that day and had the opportunity to escort this young man... Would have made sure that he fell down quite a few stairs on his way to the base...

This is part of this "new" military attitude, a bunch of whiny-ass, smart-ass kids, that do their PT's on exercise bikes and will sell their buddy out at the drop of hat.

This started 15 years ago and now, "the chickens are coming home to roost." If you kiss enough ass, you can be an E7 in under 7 years... This is the mentality that now that permeates the military, esp this new "ticket puncher" navy...

These people are now division officers, division chiefs and the senior leadership where this "Ugbogu" guy came from...

No, this isn't the only reason this kind of thing happens, but together with all of the other elements, lax screening standards, blase'blah attitude and the new increased "quality of life" stuff...Unbelievable...

    It's no wonder....

    This is terrible....

I wonder what these parents were doing...?

1 year olds aren't suppose to roam around freely...

It's so sad and these kinds of things are accidents waiting to happen, during my lunch hour a couple months back, I was shocked to see 2 young sisters, probably 2 & 3 years old, playing directly in front of the down escalator, where the stairs get meet the ground floor, and these girls were unattended, wearing children's sandals and grabbing onto the moving rubber hand rail...

Unbelievable... I couldn't believe it, I was in a hurry to get back, but I stopped and started to walk over there, luckily an old lady passing by noticed and said something to these kids...

The mother wasn't paying the least bit of attention...

The kind of thinking demonstrated by the apologists for rapists and murderers is part of the disease which is killing U.S. hegemony in the world. Japan, for its sake, ought to be seriously thinking about how it will nurture and defend its democracy without U.S. help.

No, it sounds like the author either hasn't been here long enough or has never been exposed to what the 'REAL' Japan is like.

No, no one in the Military condones these kinds of acts by a few, but it does appear to be systemic. Your outrage should be directed at the Higher up's and their screen processes for bringing troops over to japan..

As I have pointed out on other JT posts, several policy rules were broken when this young "Nigerian" National was assigned overseas on his first tour.

Please direct your outrage, however misguided, at your elected officials.

Where's your email.... Mr. Henry Hilton...?

You know it's very common for people that write opinions to include their email or other contact information so readers can get in touch with them...

But I guess you are not a REAL journalist.... It shows...

Moderator: It is our policy not to permit readers to contact writers directly because in the past, ill-mannered readers have sent insulting messages to them. In fact, many commentaries are submitted to us by readers and we are happy to publish them. Mr Hilton is one such reader. If you disagree with anything he wrote, please say why in a mature manner. That's the purpose of the discussion board. Also, if you would care to submit a commentary, we would be happy to consider it for publication.

Please tell us how the Military isn't doing enough to prevent crimes? Do you actually believe the Military wants these kind of incidents?????? You don't think they do everything in their power to try and prevent them?

Of course they don't want their people to commit crimes, that's ridiculous...

But they could start with enforcing their own standards that they already have in place, in addition to adding a few extra items to the "overseas screening" process...

How about a "Psyche Eval," this is a great predictor of what kind of behavior you could expect...

They already have a policy that, "non-U.S. citizen" first termer's aren't suppose to be assigned overseas... This is a prime example of Mr. Nigeria...they didn't follow their own regulations..

But the biggest factor is that any standard can be waived because of "needs" of the service.... So take all the rules they have in place regarding standards of individuals for serving overseas and throw them out the window, because they can be waived at any time for needs...

Bottom line, they can do a lot more...

The upper echelon of brass in DC and the CINC's have too emphasis on trying to look good according to these made up "Philosophical" policy's...

Particularly "homesteading" which forces good people out, who in most cases, don't want to leave, and brings in "youngsters" or others that have no interest in even serving in overseas, i.e... Mr. Nigerian Nat'l scumbag...

By the way, the navy broke several of it's own policy's when they sent this Nigerian guy over, non-citizen's aren't suppose to be assigned overseas on their first term...(but rarely ever enforced)

Also... when the CNFJ says they are doing all they can... This is just LIP service... They won't change a damn thing unless the military undergoes a major shakeup...

The JN government needs to get serious and even though they really can't legally do it, they must try to start bringing charges against those higher ups... I.E... A CNFJ 4 star, The Admiral in Yokosuka, CO of Mr. Nigeria's ship, etc...

They can't by law, actually do it, but it will raise awareness and bring this issue the needed attention of the U.S. public...

Serve CNFJ with papers from the prosecutor, for "Professional Negligence," one count for every serious law broken by a member of U.S. forces...

Invite him down to city hall for a friendly chat and have the police waiting for him... throw his butt in the slammer for a few days to make a point...

This will get U.S. Media attention on the real problem of lazy 'arse' derelict commanders choosing to ignore standards and send scumbags overseas...

Another fine piece of human waste...

We'll just put him in the category with Mr.Nigerian Nat'l "let's stab a 60 yr old taxi driver in the neck with a kitchen knife," soon to be doing hard time in Yokosuka city prison.

I sure wish I could meet some of these fine upstanding people...

"Three out of 864 applicants passed astronaut certification during the agency’s last recruitment in 1998 and 1999."

Gee, I can just imagine the kinds of tests they will be using...

    Just like the Todai exam...

Ok, there are 5,492 Kanji questions here, you must be able to memorize all of the different forms & uses of these kanji and the applicant's that do the best will be selected as "astronaut's."

How much you want to bet...

"Drinking alcohol, he told her in English, “You must be lonely” and kissed her and tried to lift up her skirt. In May of 2005, he took the other victim, who is married, to the secret room, saying, “I’ll take care of you. It’s convenient for us that we both are already married.”"

I thought this was the way all Japanese guys picked up women...

This happens at just about every company in Japan...

    It's the "Japanese" way...

"As for the selection of pupils as friends for Aiko, another mother says, “I heard that, just as they were with Princess Aiko’s father, Aiko’s friends have already been selected based on, for example, family lineage and height."

Oh, I'm sure race doesn't have anything to do with it either... this is so typical of the Japanese... "Oh, but were not racist..."

Sounds eerily similar to what the nazi's did 60 years ago.

If they are really trying to isolate their daughter from being exposed to 'normal' working people, they should home school her on the premises, then they choose to invite their "pure bread" and "socially privileged" elite friends over when they want their daughter to make friends.

"According to police investigations, the 53-year-old man, who lives in the apartment, jumped from the balcony around 6:15 p.m., hitting the 46-year-old cyclist. A passerby witnessed the incident and notified a police officer who was patrolling nearby. The witness told police that the man hit an electric wire and then hit the cyclist. "

Wow... That's a hell of a jump! There must have been some serious timing at work, it's hard enough to hit a parked car with a water balloon from my 8th floor apartment, let alone a power line & a moving cyclist...

    Hope the woman is ok.
