To the extent signing the Hague treaty on child abduction leads to joint custody in Japan for Japanese fathers as well, then I think Japanese have a lot to gain. Keep in mind, Japanese fathers are basically in the same boat as us.

Gotta give credit where credit is due. This seems like a step in the right direction, and I only wish my country had made some of these proposals first.

Any statistics on whether these marriages stay together? Nothing shocking here, rather like a Japanese omiai on a grand scale.

But I might add that simply being different in and of itself is an attractive feature, so that the "tosser" Western males in Japan (perhaps including myself) evince a form of survivability in simply being able to cross oceans and support ourselves, and that very differentness may be attractive. Honestly though, Japan is easier on the Western males than females. However, in college one woman who resembled a walking talking hog, went to Latin America and came back with a man looking like Antonio Banderas, thus, for the portly Western ladies Latin America may be your mecca.

I agree with neverknow2. Men after a failed relationship will date anything with a pulse to resurrect their ego and confidence, then slowly work their way up the hotty list.

Although the wages are stagnant as noted above, compared to when I came to Japan in 1993, housing and most other goods are actually cheaper, so in that sense the wage buys more now. In particular one's main cost, housing is much more reasonable, especially in the countryside.

For a 22-25 year old, these jobs aren't bad until they figure out what they want to do with their life. There are few similar opportunities in other countries that pay as well.

My understanding is that under Japanese law a parent cannot "kidnap" their own children, so I suspect he will not be charged with anything.

Yes I do. Japan need to align herself with North America esp the USA, not with China. Japan need to understand that the balance of wealth and power will never shift from north america to asia in the 21st century.

Well, here is an anecdote. I recently interviewed for a career position and salary, etc. was fine. BUT, when I asked to see the physical office it was depressing. 15 people sharing a window-less internal room of a bland rectangular building in an industrial area, in which the cafeteria was located--meaning, you come, you work, you eat one floor below, you work late, you go home. No trips for coffee or walking out for lunch or decent views. Man, who wants to spend 12 hours a day in that kind of environment with no other foreigners to commiserate with? Japanese companies need to put some priority in the physical setting.

biglittleman I like your post, especially: "Because there are a lot of losers running around Japan. Just hooking up with a foreigner wasn't smart in the past and even worse in the present." Us foreigners gotta straighten ourselves up and reprimand the losers, else we will lose our reputation.
