WOW! I would be passed out.

So even a basic attempt to enforce immigration laws is discrimination? Take the laws off the books then. No one required to show any ID, open borders, all comers welcome. Yeehaw.

I think the new TVs are ridiculously expensive as well. All that flat screen crap. I am happy enough with the old style ones. You could buy a perfectly acceptable 26" color TV for $200 or so, less for smaller ones. Also changing channels in digital takes about 1-3 seconds per channel. The old, hardy analog changers would immediately show the next channel.

sirgamble's comments are right on the money. 99% of foreigners in Japan that I know plateau in their Japanese study at JLPT 4 or 3. Only those with some interest that requires reading: history, manga, etc. seem to bulldoze through to JLPT 2 or 1.

Anyways, once the word gets round that it is a waste of time, the applicants to come to Japan will dwindle.

Just a thought, but with similarities in language (i.e., Kanji), isn't it better for Japan to focus on hiring Chinese nurses? The Filipinos I know speak wonderfully fluent English and probably would have higher QOL working in English speaking countries where nurses are needed. Seems this whole system to bring in Filipino nurses is trying to cross a river where the current is strongest instead of weakest.

"German exports in 2009 were $13,670 for every man, woman, and child. The figure for Japan was $4,063; for the United States, it was only $3,238"
U.S. exporting only slightly less than Japan, doesn't seem bad at all. Basically the issue is too many imports. Also, this author seems to ignore that Japan is also not exporting much compared to Germany. Finally, what about the other 170 odd countries? How much do they export per capita?

This is the best article ever, eliciting over a 100 comments in a matter of hours. However, I would like to clarify that said gentleman is not from England, but Cleveland, Ohio where "flipping your wife off" is a shameful yet common practice. Other practices in Cleveland include "slamming the 40" (i.e., chugging a 40 ounce of malt liquor in 15 seconds), and "sucking the wing" (i.e., putting an entire buffalo style spicy chicken wing in one's mouth and sucking all meat, fat, skin, etc. and pulling out the bare wing bones in under 5 seconds).

Guess they were Japanese, otherwise the "gaijin" moniker would have been paraded in the headline.

Throwing yogurt is not so bad, moisturizes the skin. Throwing dung, however, as caged monkeys are known to do, is a much more serious affront.

I love this article! Actually I worried she was describing me, but the first paragraph only applies to interactions with my boss. My wife does most of the screaming and flipping off (she's from Osaka you see). Anyways, this story really riled up the flock, so thank you for that.

If throwing dad to the curb will mean the whole family will become homeless, for example, then that may be why some women tolerate these abusers (pure speculation here). If you have a better explanation please propose it. Also, this is not saying anyone is justified to abuse anyone else, including women who abuse their children and then cover it up.

May not be so easy to throw dad to the curb if he is the one paying the rent. That is why, I guess, these kinds of abusers are often tolerated.

Japan is certainly in the top 3.
My brother was scheduled to take Amtrak from San Jose to Los Angeles (about 350 miles or so) at 10 am one morning for 7 hour trip. I call him the next day to ask how was the trip and he said he got home at 3am in the morning (17 hours later). Someone had been stabbed on the train before reaching San Jose, the whole line was shut down for investigation, and he waited for his train for about 9 hours. US trains, unfortunately, may be the worst in the world.

One observation is that many posters here imply that Okinawa is some sort of independent region or country. It is simply a prefecture of Japan, and defense policy is made in Tokyo in the best interests of the country.

Terrible situation. I generally avoid drinking out late for this very reason. Better to find a place near your house or take a taxi home.
