Well having gone from eikaiwa to a professional job in Japan, there are some very good points about teaching. You can get private students and build up your own business; much closer relationships with Japanese who can fill you in on Japanese culture, family, etc.; I actually used to tell jokes and laugh during my job (not anymore); easy to take time off; low stress besides the boredom; pay is perfectly satisfactory for middle class life. I think an Indian philosopher once said there is no shame for any person in doing something to support himself/herself or his/her family. I agree.

What is most surprising/sad is that Japanese parents themselves are not vocally pushing for this. In general upon divorce, Japanese fathers do not receive visitation, unless voluntarily agreed.

Read this article in the morning and visited today. Not really appealing clothes for middle agers, but right around the corner is the large Uniqlo and Mujirushi, so Ginza has something for everyone and the streets were blocked off to cars so very pleasant to walk around.

I assume/presume/guess that the number of women who are raped that become pregnant therefrom is a very small number in developed countries, and the percentage of women dying from childbirth in developed countries is also very low. However, in some developing countries, particularly in or near war zones, the percentages is likely much higher. That is all I have to say.

Sounds like a good deal for Tokyo. Better Nike pays than use my tax dollars. I could give a rat's arse what the park is called.

"I’m always going to attract attention. I’m pale, blue-eyed, and speak fluent Japanese."

A good way to keep people from bothering you is talk to yourself, laugh out loud, and take a big angry deep breath while clenching your teeth. Works for me.

"Data from an event recorder, or “black box,” in the Prius sent to a laboratory for analysis found the brakes were working properly, police said Friday."

Probably a Toyota lab checking Toyota data. Serious bias. And why can't these pathetically lazy journalists clarify the above issue of whether the lab is independent or a pawn of Toyota.

In addition, with the recent revelation of misinformation from climate extremists, I am skeptical of the fish protection extremists as well. It is your own fault though. Provide unbiased data and convince people without histrionics.

I think a ban is a knee jerk reaction. More enforcement in a policy in coordination with Japan is bound to work better.

When I do venture into downtown (rarely), I prefer the older areas (e.g., Ueno). Nothing beats Yokohama though.

Quickest way to make friends in Japan (or anywhere for that matter) is go to the gym and hang out and be friendly, and/or join a sport (karate, badminton, etc.) or any other hobby group. Work friends have some element of duty/obligation, not fun/volunteer.

I think old Ben Franklin said a man's three faithful friends are an old dog, an old wife and ready money (i.e., cash in hand!). And, in my case I would put my 4 brothers and 1 sister as best friends who would help me out. I am truly thankful of having a lot of siblings in my family. Being an only child must suck.

There are many good comments here, but this article begs the question of whether this phenomenon of hating the working spouse is prevalent in gay couples as well. Or, is the working gay spouse better received at home upon return after a hard day at the office.

I almost unwittingly bought one of these on my lunch break thinking it was cola. The boss wouldn't have been happy.

As a male married to a JP woman, I think I feel like the wife in this story. JP women always exaggerate the social responsibility and burden of school activities, etc. adding excessive stress where none need be. My mother raised 5 kids and was stressed out, but still had a job, friends and a sense of humor. The women seem to bring this stress on themselves.

Yeah, crazy stuff. I was involved in a land sale with a Japanese law firm for land in Washington State for selling price of $90,000. The buyer came with a brown paper bag stuffed with bills, the lawyer counted it, and the bank lady (about 27 or so) collected it and walked several blocks back to the branch in Japan.
