I tried to use my Visa card at JR West to buy a shinkansen ticket and they said they had to call the bank (in the US), which they did, and that triggered a fraud alert and my account was frozen. Unbelievable!

If the justification is that women are busting their bladders waiting for bathrooms, I can see this as a good option (e.g., at stadiums where women wait a lot longer than men). But just to say "I don't feel comfortable using the bathroom after a man" is total bs in my opinion.

US had the same anxieties about Japan. It won't pan out. In fact the flow of women is probably overwhelmingly Chinese women would like a Japanese man. The typical rural unmarried Chinese man probably has nothing to offer a Japanese women, materially or otherwise.

Any sport in which the athletes risk their lives, unless they are strictly tested beforehand to ensure they have the proper skill to undertake the sport. E.g., allowing unqualified teams to bobsled is kind of funny and interesting, but in reality the Olympics should be about the best competing in a safe and competent manner.

She is cute, but that does not change my mind about the low quality food at this restaurant. I just hope they start paying their managers properly for overtime.

Somewhat nauseating. I can't get all worked up in national hysteria for a foreign country. A more balanced approach would be appreciated.

Looks like this guy is simply not up to the job of leading a multinational company. Nepotism only gets you so far.

This is a damn shame. I hope in the near future Japan drags its legal system out of the 18th century.

Well, in the old West I read that a gunslinger once shot a man for snoring, so I guess this is a universal urge.

This could be a generational thing as well. People in their 20~30s grew up on harder times and even if they make good money they don't want to waste in on high margin designer stuff, rather keep the difference ourselves and take a trip or something.

The problem is not McDonald's, the problem is a lack of enforcement of labor laws and no class action suits. But hey, it isn't my problem. Just call me lazy.

As a matter of perspective, how many documented cases of Japanese killed by US beef. To my knowledge ZERO. Japanese government response, complete ban leading to billions and billions in lost sales. How many documented cases of Americans killed by defective Japanese cars, in the low 10's and rising. US government response, measured and reasonable request for information and recalls. How can this possibly be construed as Japan bashing?

Wait til you see how much Japan is going to have to pay once it boots the US out and has to deal with a massive Chinese navy/army/AF on its own, not to mention Russia to the north. Keep in mind ongoing disputes over rights to gas fields with China and islands with Russia and Korea. Many (all?) of Japan's neighbors can't wait for Japan to be weakened by a withdrawal of the US forces. $2billion will seem like pocket change.

All this education hype is bs. A developed country doesn't need more than a few percentage of the population with high math/science skills. It's kind of like getting all dressed up to hang out with your friends in front of 7-11. Give the smart kids access to what they need, teach the basics of reading/writing to others, and let the Abraham Lincoln's and Einstein's teach themselves at the well stocked libraries.
