France, Germany, East-Germany, Russia and Great Britain did the same. Even more times then the US. Nothing special about those "100". Everyone counts the golden medals first. That's how it always has been. Look at every ranking. I mean RANKING,ok!! The country with the most golden medals is ALWAYS ranked first. So silly of Americans to start counting the overall total suddenly!
Flawed system? I didn't hear anybody complain before the Olympics. Now Japan won, it's suddenly a flawed system.

Let's go back to his 7th gold.
First.....why were the officials of FINA the biggest cheerleaders of Phelps? They are supposed to be the neutral governing body in this sport.
Phelps won by 100th of second. So how is it that the official timekeeper of the event is the same company that sponsors Phelps since 2004?
Shame on you FINA and IOC to allow athletes' official sponsors to also be the timekeepers of the events where those athletes appear.
