So, you're saying don't enforce. Interesting theory. Problem is, this guy didn't look risky. He looked like he just ran into a crowd with a truck and started stabbing. Seems like the perfect example of someone who should've been tased or had the stuffing knocked out of him (without killing him, I know).

I meant a means to an end, in his eyes.

Okay, romulus put what I was thinking into words. front, if he is a true sociopathic person, why waste the money on keeping him around, knowing that someone like that will never atone for what he did because he didn't and won't ever see it as wrong. Just a means to an end.

Hmm, by assessing the situation you mean watching him run his truck into a group of people and getting out and stabbing people? Then thinking about it to make sure that what you think you saw is what you actually saw? And the police are armed. But when you see someone do something like this, how much longer would you have them wait?

I truly do hope so romulus. At least we can agree on that, I hope.

I say again, tazer. Immediately puts him down. If he wasn't high on meth or something, he would've went down immediately. Hopefully he would pull through it, but if not, he just killed 7. Will you shed a tear?

No, I don't think he will be in solitary until/if he is put to death. He will probably claim he was crazy, and be released in far less time than he deserves.

Cool man. The cops here rock. None of them are useless or cowards. I guess my eyes have fooled me, yet again. My bad.

Sure he will. Have you seen the latest criminal sentances? I don't have much faith in the courts of almost any country recently.

I don't know it all, I just know what I see. Speeding, running red lights, kids hopping around in moving cars, people running barefoot from the cops, police armed with guns running from men with pipes. I don't know, overall pretty pathetic.

Just because some of us hate to see police who are afraid of their own shadow, doesn't make us "Rambo" types. As far as the "stringent" tests, if you've ever looked at many of the slobs on duty here, I don't think many of us would have trouble getting through.

romulus, the officer did have a gun. And other tools at his disposal...

Zen, are you telling me there was only one officer? And, judging by the way that the police deal with suspects/persons of interest/people who are suspicious when they run, you darn right we should expect them to be able to stop him. What if he ran from the cops and wanted to kill someone else? What if he attacked the officer? What then? He would probably just lie down and take it. How many instances of cowardice and uselessness do we need to see before we can criticise the police? As far as joining, when's the last time a foreigner was even seen in the police force? Hmm? I've been here a while, and I can tell you I haven't seen any.

Yes, cleo, it is atypical of most people who also have a weapon and training to not be able to subdue someone. He got clubbed by the officer, who couldn't even take the man down even though he had a weapon with the advantage of leverage and momentum. Have you ever handled the batons that the police have? They aren't lightweight, and they can do some damage. He was inefficient and weak. I don't think in this instance he should have discharged his weapon, however I do think that he shouldn't be so useless as to not be able to subdue a man when he has the superior training and the tools that he had. A tazer would have been a good choice...

zen builder, the goal of terrorism is not to get us to tighten our security measures and become paranoid, the goal of terrorism is to further political or idealogical beliefs through the use of violence and terror inducing actions. The tightening of security measures is just another added benefit for them.

No, taka, they don't all look middle eastern. But then again, when is the last time the IRA has ever struck at either America, or it's interests, or it's people? Secondly, Tim Mcveigh, Terry Nichols, Ted Kazinsky don't look middle eastern. But, the bulk of the ones in this world that we live in who are screaming for American blood, who have said that they wish to kill us where ever we may be, and who have told us specifically they will come and try to attack us in the US, ARE MIDDLE EASTERN!!! And as far as my "dear leader", he's a moron and a liar. Horrible combo. Thank God he's out this year. At least we can agree on that.

So, for those who are talking about how bad and useless these measures are, what is your solution? Or is it just to badmouth what everyone else does without any solutions of your own? Racial profiling would have worked in the 9/11 situation. I hate to say it, but they all LOOKED like Middle Eastern men. Now I know, some of you may say that it is a horrible breach of civil rights, but, let's call a spade a spade. 9/11 was planned, and executed by Middle Eastern men.

I've had family who waited until the other guy drew down on him. He took 3 in the chest. The guy who shot him got a couple of months. He ended up getting thrown out of a car moving at about 75mph, but what do you expect when you are a criminal? My point is, if you give an officer a weapon, and you expect him to protect not only himself, but those around him, and then you basically tell him that he can't do anything about the situation until it is almost a certainty that at the very least he/she will be killed, what is the point of having police? You seem to be someone who thinks the world is black and white, and everyone is able to talk through their problems. Sometimes it is. But, often it isn't. The woman in the wheelchair thing, yeah, those cops need to go away for a long time. The electrician though, did he have some sort of backpack I wonder? If a man, who is suspected of being a terrorist were to have a backpack in a crowded area, and started acting all suspicious, would you like to be the one to wait until it exploded? 1 dead, or 100? Oh wait, you'd rather see 100 dead than 1 innocent man get shot by the big bad police, huh?

"And cops in other countries have stellar crime-solving and conviction rates? Got any links to statistics so that we can compare? Don't forget to include the statistics of innocent citizens being tasered/shot by incompetent cops who are only too happy to let their weapons do their jobs for them." - Cleo
No, I would be willing to bet that not all the cops in other countries have stellar crime solving and conviction rates. But, what I can tell you, is that if they were American cops at the suspected murderer of Ms. Blackman I think it was (I honestly don't remember her name, not trying to be a wiseguy for once) one barefoot guy wouldn't have outrun how many cops? How about the guy that punched an officer and then was involved in a car chase involving hundreds of police? As far as the cops who you say let their weapons do their jobs for them, are you one of the people who insists that an officer doesn't even draw his weapon until the other person involved does? Just wondering.

Did I say liar? No. Exagerrating? Possibly. Or, he ran across one of the doctors there who don't know jack, and don't want to deal with it, and would rather tell him that they will kick him out. I'm not saying I know everything, however, knowing what the doctors are constantly harping on us, and continually telling us, is that you don't get kicked out for simply asking for help. Without knowing exactly what is going on with him, and judging from your post, you had implied, well, flat out said that if he went to sickcall, he would get kicked out. I'm saying that isn't how they deal with things. Perhaps if you have something that is very serious and after treatment they can't help him, they may kick him out. But, I am telling you, without intending to bash on anyone, that he is misinformed. You don't get kicked out for asking for help. Things have changed a bit since the days of when doctors looked at psychiatric care as a sign of weakness.
