They tried to impose a similar ban (on soccer) in Saudi Arabia. Let's hope common sense will prevail over extremism.

I thought plastic surgeons had some code of conduct that prevented them from doing work on children unless it was to correct a deformity that seriously affected their quality of life.

Cavedwellers killed, ate and skinned wild beasts to survive. They didn't intensively breed them in tiny cages, to have them electrocuted and pelted while still alive, all to produce a fur garment nobody needs.

But never mind my ethical objections, they both look very badly-dressed. Are there so many of these meaningless awards they don't bother hiring stylists anymore?

How sad and disturbing. Realist, I don't know what more the site admin could have done. They notified the police as soon as they were informed. It's a pity that it was several hours too late. No site could possibly have the manpower to check on what all the users are up to.

At three days per episode, it works out at 15,000 yen per day. You can make more than that working as an extra with no speaking parts. Since singing and acting are required, the pay is very poor.

nandakanmanda, I'm not sure what you mean? The pirates opened fire on a British frigate and shots were returned. As far as I know, the British killed 3 pirates and captured only 8. The French have only captured 6. It's progress but doesn't seem very 'tough' to me. There are 17 ships and over 250 crew captured in 2008 still being held by the pirates. Maersk have already announced their larger vessels will avoid the Aden route. 'Tough action' really needs to be tougher than this.

His use of Malcolm X is hysterical considering arab countries probably rank the lowest in the world in terms of any kind of equality.

Every arab state is a failure in terms of democracy, tolerance and equality. For some states this failure is temporarily masked by the wealth brought by oil but it'll be business as usual when the oil runs out. This is because they might look united under the same language and same religion but deep down they are just a collection of tribes that have never gotten on with one another.

This is not only true for arab countries but also applies to almost all muslim countries. Everywhere where islamo-fascists have gained control of some areas, they have brought poverty, ignorance, disease and barbarism with them: stonings, hangings of gay men, blaming rape victims for 'adultery', forcing people into poverty for running 'immoral' businesses, closing girls schools, refusing the use of vaccines for children and the list goes on.

Al Qaida are like any dictator: they want an illiterate, uneducated populace they can easily manipulate.

Well done India. The Russians are on their way there and you can bet they will follow India's approach and not the namby-pamby nonsense from the British and French forces. I'm not too concerned about the pirates human rights.

Georges Duboeuf must be rubbing his hands in glee. He's found the perfect market (uneducated about wine and willing to buy anything French) for this rubbish that no-one in Europe wants anymore.

I like that they chose a foreign woman who is not under 25, not white and not a toothpick for their ad. Variety is the spice of life ;-)

mindovermatter, it's sad but true and it's widespread in the rest of Asia too. I think it's to do with the idea of seeing children as property, which still persists to this day.

The only positive outcome of this story is that child 2 and soon to be born child 3 may have been spared the same fate.

mael, the side effects of the pill have been greatly reduced with the invention of the mini-pill and I'm pretty certain turning 'boyish' was never one of them.

Moderator: Readers, no further discussion of the pill, please. It is not relevant to this thread.

All the adults in the house knew, the neighbours knew, and yet not a single one of them could be bothered making an anonymous call to the police or social services to save her.

From the BBC article "Court officials said they had been shocked at how some witnesses found the level of violence in the home to be normal." who on earth would find violence against a 3-year-old normal?

A recent have your say debate was "What does Japan need to do in order to attract more tourists?". Let's target rich foreigners who can afford to eat in Michelin-starred restaurants! Food in Japan is delicious, from the simplest everyday dishes to kaiseki. Foreign food is excellent too and sometimes better and fresher than in its country of origin. Japan is a foodie paradise, except for strict vegetarians.

Ayumi Hamasaki really is deaf, in one ear anyway but you could be forgiven to think it was both. I'm glad for Ami Suzuki that she's working, she almost disappeared a few years ago.

It's also quite ironic to read this after all the drunk drivers stories... maybe Japan needs to worry more about the drugs that are widespread: alcohol and tobacco.
