Everton2, then how do you explain that so many second and third generation Lao, Vietnamese and Cambodian immigrants have become professional people in France? Their photos stand out too. I think the difference is that their grandparents and parents raised them to value education and hard work. Again, I agree that racism exists in France but it certainly cannot explain why some minority groups do so much better than others.

Bushlover, dealing harshly with crime works well with common criminals. Islamists are different. Their aim is to die and be seen as martyrs. We are playing into their hands by executing them. They should have been left to rot in a high-security jail for the rest of their miserable lives.

Racism does exist in France as it does in most countries but some minority groups alienate themselves by refusing to integrate.

This idea that everyone is just “French” means there are no census or other national figures calculating how big the country’s minority groups are.

It's also extremely convenient to hide the fact that immigrants from North Africa and their descendants are responsable for a very large proportion of crimes such as rape, assault, burglary and murder. You just need to read the "faits divers" page of any French newspaper for this fact to become obvious.

There is something uniquely Japanese about this: the ability to switch off any feelings like empathy when outsiders are involved. You can see this in everyday life, for example when you fall down some steps in a train station in Tokyo you will be stared at or ignored. Fall down some steps in a train station in Madrid and people will come running to help you get up and check you're OK. A very interesting article, let's have more of this please JT!

This has been the same in every country I've worked in. The lower paid jobs have an overtime structure (time and a half, double time, etc) but any managerial post has a fixed salary no matter how many hours you put in.

Things are worse for Japanese workers because Japanese society hangs on to values that are irrelevant in the modern world. There needs to be changes in labor laws and the laws that already exist need to be enforced. I wish Shimizu all the best with his lawsuit.

Let's be honest: Japan isn't a country that many people are interested in visiting. It's like a 'special interest' place for people into ancient history and culture, onsen, kaiseki and the ones into popular culture like Japanese films, dramas, jpop, anime, etc... I have never met anyone else who had Japan in their top 10 countries they want to visit someday.

Sex education gives essential information that children need to become balanced adults. Religious or prudish parents shouldn't be allowed to stop their children from accessing this information. I rememember those kids whose parents wouldn't let them attend sex ed classes. They were the ones who believed 'a girl can't get pregnant the first time'.

Sadly we live in a world where some people would rather their 12-year-old daughter didn't get a vaccine that could save her from cervical cancer for 'moral' reasons.

Her cutesy 'bon weekend' 'bonne soirée' are annoying considering she started her career going by her Japanese name. Then she went back to Christel presumably to cash in on the half thing.

@tmarie, meal ticket is a bit harsh. Saeko has been working since a very young age and I'm sure she must have a bit of cash stashed up: http://www2.topcoat.co.jp/saeko/top/index.php

They made a mistake and did the right thing. It may not last because they're too young but I still wish them good luck.

I'm disgusted at some the comments here. Just ask yourself this: what's the difference between yourself and a homeless person - a couple of paychecks maybe? If you lose your job on Monday, are you sure you'll find another one? Will it pay as much? I've been in Yamaguchi's situation and I share her anxiety. I will never, ever, take a half-decent job for granted and neither should any of you.

Low wages are a huge problem, not just for people struggling on little money but for society as a whole. When you work full-time and are still robbed of the dignity a job should be giving you, you stop caring. A country where too many people have stopped caring is going to have serious social problems. Japan also needs to avoid the mistakes made in many western countries, where wages have become so low that it is more lucrative for some people to be unemployed. Being on benefits has become a career choice. In Japan the problem is the opposite, with lack of help for single parents for instance. Japan needs to find the right balance because it is clear the old family structures are falling apart, there is a need for much more state help for vulnerable people.

*"there’s less chance a person could be mistaken for someone else on a watch list" * BS. They're targetting the islamic world, that's more than a billion people where many share the same name. If a known terrorist is named Ahmed Ibrahim, the tens of thousands of men sharing this name in the same age bracket are still going to be hugely inconvenienced and even unfairly detained. Meanwhile the real Ahmed Ibrahim will have become more creative in his use of fake identities and will go through undetected. I'm not saying I know a better way to screen passengers but this way won't work and it's going to antagonize a lot of people.
