Having some b---s and being assertive is a requirement in some moments of life. It doesn't pay to be pushed around. Unfortunately, it seemed like Dad thought he could change that part of his son just by nagging. He should have done something practical to reinforce the boy's low confidence. Subtlety was called for, not direct criticism of a person's core.

He should have joined a kendo club with his boy and made sure by hook or by crook they went together every Saturday, or something. Emphasise growing stronger together, that Dad isn't perfect either. This way he basically said to his son that he's a failure of character.

Such a tragedy when from the sounds of things he was physically healthy.

    Also, very salient point, Notginger...

I ran a quite successful class 2 weeks ago with Obama's speech. I had my adult students read a small excerpt and then relay it to the group's scribe orally. When the group had transcribed everything, they translated it. They had to carefully read and speak clearly or the scribe would get things wrong. They enjoyed it, and the material wasn't too hard. Stuff like (I don't remember the exact lines) 'The challenges we face may be new. The solutios with which we meet them may be new. But the things on which our nation's success has hinged - loyalty, patriotism, charity, etc etc.. These things are old'

Avergage students can handle that. They need a dictionary, of course. And I wonder if words like charity and other concepts translate differently, too. I didn't have time to discuss them all individually.

It's not even close to Spring yet, though :/ Or is February officially spring here?

I agree with the fact that many phones have needless extras. I'm still kicking with my old Vodafone that has an E->J and J->E dictionary included as a base function, and which switches between English and Japanese interface. Until I can find a model that does that without needing to access the internet, I won't be trading in my battered old phone, luck willing.

I've heard phones now all download those kind of dictionaries, but nobody in a store can seem to give me a straight answer on how it's done and what kind of dictionary you get for your effort. I dont want a self populated dictionary, of course. Anyone heard of a downloadable dictionary App for the average new phone?

They'll probably have serial numbers anyway, right?

I wonder what kind of crappy phones they bagged. At 50,000 or so yen each on average, I guess they couldn't have been iPhones....?

Hilarity, but I don't think you'll see eikaiwa teachers struggling in the upcoming months. Job adverts are still plentiful. It's more likely that the homeless westerner you see was some scumbag finance worker who enjoyed a living moving other people's money around and getting paid for it.

Insults aside, it's a cold season to be sleeping on a bench. Tokyo seems warmer than Kansai when I look at the news reports, but I wouldn't like to spend a night outside in either place.

She has a mother and father but they were all on the street.. awful. I wonder how on earth she will adjust to 'normal' life...?

It certainly doesn't seem like he went looking for work. I suppose with 5 kids, money was already tight. What's a medical technician do, anyway ? It sounds like reasonably well paid work.

I'm going to stir the pot and blame his religious leanings.

I believe the first 4 were adopted. The big fuss last year or so was over their 'real' children. I think they're to be applauded for adopting so many kids. It's probably hard for them to spend lots of time with their kids, but how is that different to any other working parent? They probably have days off at a time and then nights where they aren't home. And they'd probably -still- spend more time with their kids than a J-dad.

Yes. He certainly looks like he's trying to get as fetal as possible under that warm little net. I mean, if it was shot at you, would it even do anything? Carrying no weight...
