It's a nice idea! The trick will be getting the photos you want to associate with callers onto its directory. If it's easy, this will be popular. If it's hard, this will sink like a stone.

Lovely article. Lacking the spleen we often see here on JT. And funny too!
I wish Japanese schools would just provide a few beds so that you can face your exhaustion on hard days instead of trying to struggle through it!

I don't think this last conclusion is right at all. Social control in Japan is still enormously strong; it's why people despair at their lack of control over their circumstances and future. And I don't think 'control over the individual' has much to do with making friendships. Indeed, if people were truly free, they'd make bonds naturally. But they aren't. They're in a strange, warped reality where isolation or ostracism is the same as dying socially.
I DO agree that premade meals don't encourage things like independence, self-confidence, discipline (fiscal and otherwise), planning, etc.

Nobody in any country's royal family has a chance of coming out normal or unscathed. What a pitiful life.

I agree with Smorkian. While those people have it tough, I think it was more of a 'compared to previous generations' type of thing. Even when people were starving postwar about what to eat, there was a sort of 'advantage' in that being successful simply meant getting by. Now, kids are raised to wonder if they have 'enough' and not having an index of satisfaction to judge anythign by. They don't know how to be happy and it's some strange, empty life. Is it harder than starvation or guerilla militants? No. But it's hard in its own way. I loved living in Japan for five years, but I wouldn't be Japanese for quids.

American and Australian obesity are at terribly high levels; I don't think a difference of 5 years tells the story. Imagine being obese and old; the arthritis and other problems you'd have. I'd much rather be old and Japanese than old and American.

Recruiter, that was obviously a sarcastic comment about why the book has been released at all, directed at the general Japanese public. Get a clue.

I'm occasionally worried that celebrating Japan's roots like this stops people from finding their own new path.

Nandaka, while I do agree that she could grow up to be as abusive as the bullies who torment her, I don't think her language is deliberately manipulative or rehearsed. Some kids truly can't seem to find a voice other than the one they've learnt to use around others and they soon lose the capacity to have another.
You're right about teachers having no tools for discipline now. They don't use lunch or after school detention because there is no way to do so in Japan. Lunch is only 20m of psuedo 'free time' after kyuushoku, and after school it's club. There's nothing to take away from them with detention. So they have nothing to lose when it comes to being punished.
Once the kids realise that adult preaching is just words and entreaties, they get this heady realisation that they can ultimately do what they want.

Yeah, a very nub article... And I dont think 'karoshi' qualifies as suicide! Those people didn't ask to die, they just didnt/couldnt resist their circumstances...

Why is it we never hear of Japanese PEOPLE being able to force out their poor politicians? It always has to be a game of words between men in the big house. Can't his constituents force a referendum and have him chucked?
