    Adverts,

The wealthy are paying a lower tax rate by using tax shelters and other advantages in the tax code to avoid high tax rates in the first place. Raising tax rates on them will only drive their financial decisions to pour even more money into the shelters and do nothing to help the economy or the deficit to the avoid even higher tax rates. This is not a class thing this is basic Human nature. You want to get their accumulated wealth back into the economy? Start with getting with getting rid of tax policy decisions that drove their money into tax shelters in the first place.

    Not so fast.

    From Berkley's website:

"Who pays for science? Today, we all do. Most scientific research is funded by government grants (e.g., from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, etc.), companies doing research and development, and non-profit foundations (e.g., the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, etc.). As a society, we reap the rewards from this science in the form of technological innovations and advanced knowledge, but we also help pay for it. You indirectly support science everyday through taxes you pay, products and services you purchase from companies, and donations you make to charities."

    Not so fast 2,

Who does a better job funding the research and towards things that actually improve our lives? Companies doing research or non-profit foundations that rely on donations (from the wealthy) or the Gub-mint? Who do want to encourage to keep doing this the private sector, or just hand it all over to Gub-mint in highe Taxes on the wealthy so they can fund the research that they choose that is important and produces electric cars nobody wants.

Let's make this easy. GM gets a Gub-mint bail-out and now produces the Chevy Volt that sold a whole whopping 125 units last month. Ford did not want or request a bail-out is doing quite nicely in the sales and on the R&D front but we are going to raise taxes on the CEO of Ford because he did a good job keeping his company healthy and didn't go to Govt teat for a handout courtesy of the taxpayer.

So where do all those research universities that drive much of American innovation get their money from?

    Oh, right. The gub'mint.

Most get their research money from private non-profit foundations such as The Pew Institute, The Gates Foundation and way to many others to mention. Google foundations research grants. The very non-profits and charitable organizations the wealthy support in the first place.

Who's gonna get hurt after they get can no longer itemize or claim the deductions on their tax bill? Oh, right the students and the research they actually now support voluntarily.

One thing is plain however when advocating the shafting of a public service employee by someone in the military: The thing these so-called "conservatives" hate more than anything else is the suggestion that they try the tiniest drop of the medicine they are always dishing out to others.

Point of order: Members of the Military are public service employees. The suggestion to a liberal that other public service employees who are not in the military be treated and abide by the same rules and regulations that they are held to is called taking the same medicine they do as public servants in service to others.

I don't believe I am mistaken, but I think you were one of those arguing against Wisconsin public employees receiving benefits exceeding many in private sector jobs. Those Wisconsin public workers had signed contracts and had promises made to them too.

Let me know when a Military member can join a union and have them negotiate a contract and pension benefits on their behalf.

    > However, there should be one significant condition placed on ex-military personnel: If they take a government job after leaving the military, their military pension should be held in a deferred account and not paid to them until they leave government service completely.

I also see you have no problem with breaking contracts already agreed to and promised in the first place.

    The economy did quite well under Clinton, with higher marginal and capital gain rates;

Thanks mainly to the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the fact Clinton didn't have Cold War defense budgets, as a matter of fact he was the one that got the "peace dividend" money on his watch, spending on national defense dropped from over 6 percent of GDP to 3.8 percent for Clinton. That is one heck of chunk of change that he had to play with. All thanks to the U.S Military and the sacrifices they made and ultimately winning the cold war after 50 years manning the wall against the eastern block.

One of defense spending reduction is a military retirement pay. There are many double dippers who served 20 yrs in military. Many of them are getting out at age 39 with military retirement pay for life and start second career in civilian life.

They gave twenty years of their life serving the country and giving up most of the rights ordinary citizens take for granted. They are ordered where to go, where to live, can't be political or protest working or living conditions. Can be punished under the UCMJ, a justice system that is far more strict than any civilian court for those who fall under it. Can be ordered what to do in their "free time" such as being under curfew and if found in violation punished under the UCMJ for violation of lawful orders. They protect those that are free but are not really free themselves. In return for giving up their rights the ones you take for granted the Govt made a promise that after twenty years they will honor their service and sacrifice by providing a small monthly pension for life. This is not some sort of "entitlement" this is something they have Earned, I repeat earned..................They kept their end of their enlistment contracts the Govt is under the exactly the same obligation to keep up its end of the contract.

Typical biased reporting. Herds? Right wing President?

What garbage. This is nothing more than allowing the public to go about it's daily business without having to make any special accommodations as to what time they can drive their car in the streets to avoid conflict with outside prayers.

The poverty rate in the US now is the highest it has been since measurements were started, and the wealthy have never been wealthier.

    Yabits,

Just a silly question. The U.S saw household wealth lose 16.4 trillion dollars from the great recession. We have since gained back about 8.7 trillion and are still 7.7 trillion poorer now then we were in 2007. Do you think the wealthy also did not take the same hit? You claim they have never been wealthier, they lost just as much value in their portfolios as anyone else and are still in the hole today. A recession doesn't discriminate who it hurts when the entire economy goes bust. The wealthy and ones who do have more cash in the bank because they prudently saved instead of going on a credit spree during good economic times can weather the recession storm better, but to say they are now wealthier is just not true or factual.

The buyers market was primarily domestic. With a 90% top marginal rate and strong, collective bargaining for workers, the wealth in the United States was distributed in such a way that many millions could genuinely feel prosperous, and also feel that the prosperity would continue.

That's why President Kennedy cut the top marginal tax rate from 90% to 70% so the prosperity would continue in the early 60's. Wouldn't want that rate to become actually become now a drag on the economy after Europe and Asia got back on their feet and started selling us Volkswagen's again.

The USA had a marginal tax rate above 90% for most of the years when it saw its highest economic growth. So much for tax rates holding things back.

Ummm...... A little context that you failed to mention.

Back in the 1950s, when the top marginal tax rate was more than 90 percent, real annual growth averaged more than 4 percent.

After WW2 Europe and Asia were on their knees and the only country that they turn to to rebuild their economies was the USA. We had a buyers market for everything we could possibly produce and they could buy. That is why we saw our highest economic growth, tax rate at the time had nothing to do with it.

That's right, Sailwind! That means that American taxpayer subsidies to US oil exploration firms benefit the entire world equally - and is why the effect at the pump is so imperceptible!

Got it, explains why we are not drilling for exploration in the U.S, we would rather our use tax dollars to help out the Saudis.

I saw an ad for a bumper sticker this morning that was so true that I violated my no bumper sticker rule (you can't sum up political policy in a bumper sticker).

Agreed.....How is "Hope and Change" working out for you?

Tax credits which fund oil exploration don't just benefit US oil companies - they benefit the world! Oil is globally fungible

No offense, but duh "fungible" is the markets prevailing rate.

This measure was clearly designed to demonstrate your obstructionism, obsequiousness to the moneyed class, and hostility towards the working class.

To bad it wasn't designed to create jobs.

Which is why the organization didn't last very long

Umm it lasted over a hundred years.

It was established in 1869, reached 28,000 members in 1880, then jumped to 100,000 in 1885. Then it mushroomed to nearly 700,000 members in 1886, but its frail organizational structure could not cope and it was battered by charges of failure and violence. Most members abandoned the movement in 1886-87, leaving at most 100,000 in 1890.[1] Remnants of the Knights of Labor continued in existence until 1949,

The Knights of Labor definitely had racist and violent elements in some of its local chapters -- who were at odds with its leadership. Which is why the organization didn't last very long. I suspect the Tea Party will suffer the same fate.

The Tea Party is not a racist organization and does not tolerant violent elements. You have some sort of point here.

My gratitude to President Obama for his kind words in advance. And my extreme gratitude to him for taking out Osama Bin Laden on his watch.

I will do what I have done every year since the attack and has become sort of a tradition in my family. I will go to the local fire dept here in my Japanese neighborhood with my wife and give my thanks to the men there. Though they may never be tasked with what their American firefighting brothers in New York had to do that fateful day, they stand ready to go into harms way to protect the innocent should the bell ring. It is my small way to show my gratitude to them (and all firefighters worldwide) and to honor those firefighters in New York who are no longer with us.

    yabits,

Anyone who has studied American history will see this distinct pattern of violence-prone, hate-filled groups rising up from time to time out of the gutter -- groups of people who think they are the true Americans. From the violently anti-Catholic Know-Nothings of the 19th century, to the original Knights of the KKK, to the reformed and reincarnated United Klans of America, to the America-Firsters, to the Tea Party of today. Y'all have one hekuva tradition to try and be proud of.

I've studied American history quite a bit happens to be a hobby of mine and I actually consider myself pretty knowledgeable on the subject. You've left out some pretty key parts in your cherry picking above to smear conservatives as usual..

Anyone who has studied American history will see this distinct pattern of violence-prone, hate-filled groups rising up from time to time out of the gutter -- groups of people who think they are the true Americans. From the violently Knights of Labor organization of the 19th century, to the Wooblies to the reformed and reincarnated AFL-CIO, to the to the Union dominated Democratic Party of today. Y'all have one hekuva tradition to try and be proud of.

    Background:

    Knights of Labor,

The Knights were responsible for race riots that resulted in the deaths of about 28 Chinese Americans in the Rock Springs massacre in Wyoming, and an estimated 50 African-American sugar-cane laborers in the 1887 Thibodaux massacre in Louisiana. The Knights strongly supported the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 and the Contract Labor Law of 1885, as did many other labor groups, although the group did accept most others, including skilled and unskilled women of any profession.

    Wooblies,

The IWW was founded in Chicago in June 1905 at a convention of two hundred socialists, anarchists, and radical trade unionists from all over the United States (mainly the Western Federation of Miners) who were opposed to the policies of the American Federation of Labor (AFL). The IWW's goal was to promote worker solidarity in the revolutionary struggle to overthrow the employing class; its motto was "an injury to one is an injury to all"
