I myself am religiously opposed to violence in any form and am quite against my taxes being used to fund the military-industrial complex. I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting an opt-out of THAT "mandate.

    Laguna,

It is not mandate it is what the Constitution says the Government will do.

The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence.

Secondly in accordance with our Constitution you can opt-out from Military service as..........

In the United States, there are two main criteria for classification as a conscientious objector. First, the objector must be opposed to war in any form, Gillette v. United States, 401 U.S. 437. Second, the objection must be sincere, Witmer v. United States, 348 U.S. 375. That he must show that this opposition is based upon religious training and belief was no longer a criterion after cases broadened it to include non-religious moral belief,

Taxes.....well we all are stuck with them no matter what it pays for and that isn't going to change anytime soon as long as we need to fund a Government.

    plasticmonkey, Madverts,

“The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB),

Said it best in their response to Obama's compromise.

But stepping away from the particulars, we note that today’s proposal continues to involve needless government intrusion in the internal governance of religious institutions, and to threaten government coercion of religious people and groups to violate their most deeply held convictions.

Really, now what would stop Obama from just doing this to Catholics and not to any other religious group it deems now needs a mandate to comply with whatever their version of "the greater good" is?.

Wonder what is he going to try to mandate next on all of us whether we like or not and are opposed to it based on our religious principles. That the Amish will now have to buy cars to do their fair share to save the American auto industry? That Muslims now have to eat pork to support that industry?

Sailwind this is about the US and contraception. China and Canadian bilateral agreements be damned, get a grip of yourself man.

    Just FYI

I was responding to Yabits as he brought up Obama and his foreign policy in his comment on this thread. Your "dressing me down" should have been directed toward him not me.

That they've chosen this issue as their new hill to fight on shows how desperate they've become. They can't credibly attack President Obama's foreign policy and, as much as they wish otherwise,

China and Canada declared Thursday that bilateral relations have reached “a new level” following a series of multibillion-dollar trade and business agreements to ship additional Canadian petroleum, uranium and other products to the Asian superpower.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has said building pipelines to the West Coast — such as the proposed Northern Gateway oilsands pipeline and a separate one for liquefied natural gas — is a national priority as Canada looks to ship its vast resources to Asia.

That's some real great foreign policy in action on his part with our close neighbor to the North.

Santorum is a freaking lunatic. A woman who is the victim of a rape should immediately be allowed to take a "morning-after" pill so that the woman can comfort herself in the knowledge that this "gift" gets flushed out of her body the way more than 70% of zygotes do naturally. (That's fertilized eggs, people.)

That wasn't the question he was asked.

He was asked.......'Asked by CNN's Piers Morgan what he would do if his own daughter approached him, begging for an abortion after having been raped,

Which implies that his Daughter was already pregnant and so the "morning after" wasn't even in consideration in his thinking or answer to the question. It would be interesting if he was asked if a woman was raped would he approve of taking the "morning after pill". I would hazard it may very well be yes as at time there is nothing to show that conception had taken place such as a positive pregnancy test.

Secondly if the is "sick" because he holds religious beliefs that have been pretty much mainstream Catholic doctrine for centuries you might as call the Pope a sick man also.

    Notice this section:

'Asked by CNN's Piers Morgan what he would do if his own daughter approached him, begging for an abortion after having been raped, Santorum explained that he would counsel her to "accept this horribly created" baby, because it was still a gift from God, even if given in a "broken" way.'

    "counsel her"??

Notice that he never said he ever said he would counsel. Notice that is what the reporter is saying not him. Notice the article is from Huffington post. Notice the bias slant? Notice that the quotes were taken out of context in the first paragraph so as to get folks like you riled up?

Notice this is exactly what he said and the counsel isn't even mentioned.

I've always, you know, I believe and I think the right approach is to accept this horribly created -- in the sense of rape -- but nevertheless a gift in a very broken way, the gift of human life, and accept what God has given to you.

He further stated that even it the child was conceived through violent act of rape, the woman should feel happy to be blessed with a child.

He said absolutely nothing close to that at all. I don't really agree with his view as I am very reluctantly pro-choice, but it is coming from a place of strong personal conviction and I do respect his view on abortion. It is a horrible decision no matter what side you fall on the issue for any woman with a conscience to make in the first place.

Asked by CNN's Piers Morgan what he would do if his own daughter approached him, begging for an abortion after having been raped, Santorum explained that he would counsel her to "accept this horribly created" baby, because it was still a gift from God, even if given in a "broken" way.

"Well, you can make the argument that if she doesn't have this baby, if she kills her child, that that, too, could ruin her life. And this is not an easy choice, I understand that. As horrible as the way that that son or daughter and son was created, it still is her child. And whether she has that child or she doesn't, it will always be her child, and she will always know that," Santorum said.

"And so to embrace her and to love her and to support her and get her through this very difficult time, I've always, you know, I believe and I think the right approach is to accept this horribly created -- in the sense of rape -- but nevertheless a gift in a very broken way, the gift of human life, and accept what God has given to you. As you know, we have to, in lots of different aspects of our life we have horrible things happen. I can't think of anything more horrible, but nevertheless, we have to make the best out of a bad situation and I would make the argument that that is making the best."

Republicans are now extreme radical conservatives,

The growing national debt and increased power of the federal government are two top concerns for self-identified Tea Party supporters, a Gallup poll indicated.

Eight in 10 Tea Party supporters said the federal government is doing too much in areas that should be left to individuals and businesses, Gallup said.

Results are based on nationwide telephone interviews conducted with of 2,063 adults May 24-25 and June 11-13. The margin of error is 3 percentage points.

Doesn't seem very radical to me, Libertarian and being fiscally conservative are pretty mainstream views after all, ask the Bluedog Democrats.

Right there with ya, Torasan, but it could be worse: "failing to lead," "dictator," "socialist," "corporate proxy," "Muslim," "secularist," "Chicago-style politician," "foreigner" - these are mutually exclusionary yet are hurled at Obama often in the same sentence.

You read this in past newspaper articles in describing President Obama? Mr. Obama a Chicago-style politician today stated........ I think not.

I'm also more curious as to why they voted for Former Senator Santorum in the Midwest. Is it because he is from Ohio and knows the economic issues they face better than Romney? Be nice if the article actually informed us as to why they voters went for him in these three states.

    Ms. Cleo,

sailwind, your dog is not an 'unpaid guard dog'. You are an unpaid dog-food opener and walkies companion.

I will have you know that I am the Master in my house, that's right, the big cheese, the head honcho, King of the castle and all that other stuff. My dog use to understand our relationship until the better half was able to get at him when I wasn't looking. Such as sneaking food underneath the table at din din time to him as he sat there and looked miserable at her. Yes, I caught her doing it !!!!! And since then its been downhill from there. I don't care what anyone else thinks but a dog doesn't deserve 5 people coats (my wife loves shopping for him) to choose from to slap on him when it is cold outside before his walk......He was already born with a coat for goodness sakes the one nature gave him !!!! This court better throw this suit out before my wife tells my mutt I owe him backpay.

PETA argues that continuing the whales’ “employment” at SeaWorld violates the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits slavery.

I will NOT inform my dog of this and his of his "employment" in my house as an unpaid guard dog........My wife has already spoiled him bad enough already as it is without some court getting involved.

There are 3 possible outcomes: 1) Iran starts to comply and agrees to have a transparent and verifiable civilian nuclear program, 2) Iran continues along the path and develops the bomb, and 3) Israel strike Iran preemptively. Two of those outcomes are disastrous. Only one leads to peace and stability, and the ball is in Iran's court on that one. We're left sitting here praying that Iran shows some kind of common sense and doesn't drag the entire world onto a path of endless hostility.

Option 4..... The U.S declares that diplomacy has failed despite the best efforts of the world community on preventing Iran from continuing its pursuit to build a nuclear weapon over the past 7 or 8 years. The U.S declares that Iran has to open up their entire nuclear program to an IAEA inspection regime and agree to have their program monitored by the IAEA and has two weeks to work out the details that is acceptable to the IAEA. If the Iranian regime refuses the U.S will then begin a Naval blockade that will prevent any Iranian oil from being exported. Communicating this ahead of time could help to deter Iran, as the loss of oil income would be a major blow that would threaten the survival of the regime. Also communicate that any attempt to close the straits of Hormuz in retaliation to a Naval Blockade will be considered an act of war against the international community and a coalition of Arab states, U.S forces and European forces will take military action on Iranian military targets.Communicate that the Naval Blockade, if Iran is foolish enough to go that far and allow it to happen after the announced deadline would be lifted when Iran fully complies with the IAEA.

Sanctions haven't worked, Diplomacy hasn't worked. The U.S in its role as world leader now should act in the best interest of our Middle east allies and I mean Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, our European allies in assuring the oil they depend on for their economies continues to flow through the straits and deterring Israel from pursuing a military option. The U.S should starve the current Iranian regimes economy and let the Iranian people rise up against it as the economic misery from a Naval blockade starts to take its toll. They have risen up before and they will again if the U.S shows steadfast leadership on the goal for the regime to either comply or face economic ruin.

Second: Wiping out Israel is just propaganda.

Here are your statistics on propaganda.

The conflict between Hezbollah and Israel began on July 12 when Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed Shiite terrorist organization, crossed the Israeli-Lebanese border into Israel in an ambush, killing three Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers and kidnapping two others. [1] In turn, Israel responded with an operation in Lebanon that aimed to disarm Hezbollah and rescue the abducted IDF soldiers. Hezbollah's daily barrage of rocket attacks took a heavy toll on Israel's civilian population, economy and environment.

    During the conflict:

159 Israeli citizens were killed; of those
43 civilians of Jewish, Arab, Christian and Muslim origin killed in rocket attacks
119 IDF soldiers killed in rocket attacks as well as in armed combat [2]
4,262 civilians were treated for injuries in hospitals; of those, 33 were seriously wounded, 68 were moderately wounded, and 1,388 were lightly wounded. Another 2,773 suffered from shock and anxiety. [3]
More than 2 million people - a third of Israel's population - were within Hezbollah rocket range [4]
300,000 - 500,000 Israelis were displaced from their homes [5]
More than 1 million residents were forced to live in bomb shelters [6]
6,000 homes were hit by rockets [7]
7,600 property damage claims were filed [8]

A Snapshot of Hezbollah's Rocket Cache and Attacks:

13,000 rockets were in Hezbollah's arsenal at the start of the war [9]
3,970: The number of rockets Hezbollah fired into Israeli cities and towns; 901 landed in urban areas [10]
Of the missiles Hezbollah has fired at Israel:
More than 1,000 hit the Kiryat Shmona area
808 hit near or in Nahariya
471 hit near or in Tzfat (Safed)
176 hit near or in Karmiel
106 hit near or in Akko
93 rockets hit the Haifa area
81 rockets hit near Tiberias [11]
1,800 buildings used by Hezbollah have been destroyed by Israeli forces [12]
530: Hezbollah guerrillas killed by the IDF [13]
309: Hezbollah rocket launchers destroyed by the IDF [14]
33: Hezbollah-built tunnels destroyed by the IDF [15]

No doubts about them hating Israel, but until now they never dared any direct action against Israel since their islamic revolution.

They've done plenty of indirect action against Israel through their Hezbollah and Hamas proxies.

I do not see why this should change with the eventual acquisition of nuclear weapons.

I do not either except that now the stakes are a lot more dire for Israel, Plutonium or radioactive waste dropped in the water supply by Hezbollah or Hamas can really ruin ones day.

While Iran building a bomb is not ideal (although reportedly they already do have nuclear weapons) what threat are they.

They are a regime that wouldn't have any problem giving nuclear material to Hamas or Hezabollah or any other organization that uses terrorism to advance their mutual political goals to be able to strap on a missile and launch it at Israel. I'm sure you've heard of a dirty bomb. Just remember the havoc that Fukushima caused here in Japan (and still is) by releasing low level radioactive material into the environment. They darn sure are a threat to all of us who aren't down with their particular 13th century Islamic vision of Government and rule.
