I have to take flights of over 10 hours every now and then and the only thing I can say is: sleep on the plane. Don't watch the TV, don't listen to music, don't play games, don't read. Just sleep. Haven't had a jet lag since I started doing this.

What I was wondering about is... Why don't they make the disciplines "95m swimming", "90m swimming", "85m swimming", "80m swimming", and "75m swimming"? That would give Phelps even more medals! :P
If there were as many running disciplines as for swimming some guys could get 20 or more medals!

"US tv is the best tv, most watched and exported."
And as 95% of people are idiots, that proves it is crap indeed.
"Don`t that tell you something."
Well, since all Japanese mostly watch it, it means - by your standards - that it must be great!
"US tv is easily world number 1, followed by the Brits"
... both of which are English speaking countries allergic to foreign languages. Tell you what, when did a European movie last become a hit in the US? Ask the film critics what they think about European movies, and connect the dots.
Moderator: Readers back on topic please. The subject is Japanese TV programs.

RepublicofTexas "Same as in any country, some are good, some are bad."
Congrats, you are the first person to post here who has any common sense.
I agree that there is some crap out there, but on average I would pick Japanese tele over what I had to see at home (being repeats of repeats, repeats of family shows a la wheel of fortune, repeats of crap that came over from the US, and interviews with the local celebreties who are in my opinion not a but more funny than the Japanese ones).
If all of you truly think that Japanese television is worse than that of your home land it can mean 4 things: 1. you are not watching Japanese television 2. you are not watching television in your home country 3. you are not watching either of them 4. you are a liar

"High-level skills abroad don't guarantee job in Japan"
Let's change this title to
"High-level skills abroad don't guarantee job"
Oh, and Coligny, not only do you not know German, I see you have also never worked with Japanese Md/PhD's either!
Anyway, we're still waiting for you in the "No substitute for human touch in translating" thread :P

Mate, I don't know if you are still here, or if you have run off to hide, but you are about to get yourself into trouble. The reason why? I am going to ask you for some examples that support your claims.
"Japanese language is really just a puddle of mud with as much obscurantism as possible, rules that are more often broken than followed and bail outs that hide behind "the context" to make sense of anything, while being unable to retrieve any context because nothing make anysense (cathc 22)."
Well, as I wrote above: let's hear some examples! And I am looking especially forward to exampes about "rules that are more often broken than followed", because a few lines further you claim...
"And Japanese fail miserably where German, English, Spanish, Portuguese, French and many other suceed."
Whenever I hear the words "rules" and "exceptions" the first couple of things to come to mind usually include "French", "English" and a couple of other languages. Let's hear 'em, those rules in Japanese that are so often broken! And after that, you can give us a list of all irregular verbs in Japanese, English, German, and French, and we will compare their lenghts!
"Again, for precision nothing beat the German."
I dare to say that you, my dear, probably don't know German. Sure, "der die das" seems fun at first. But to say this increases precision? I think not. Did old Greek and Latin have a higher precision than current languages? If so, why did they become dead languages?
"Deeper meaning through kanjis ? in europe we call this rebuses, it's considered as a game for little kids, not as a full language."
In Europe wo do not call this rebuse, we call it "subtlety" or "nuance", and I can assure you that even the "supperior" German, English and French contain plenty of it.
"Even the Vietnamese"
Ho ho ho! Even the .... Vietnamese!!
"Metaphor or other stylistic tools and play of words seems to be lost on 99% of the population."
Examples~! Examples~! Are you saying that all those Japanese who use "目の中へ入れても痛くない" have no clue about what they are saying? When they say "助け船を出す" do they actually run off to get a boat? When "親の顔が見たい" that they actually want to see the faces? When they use "軌道に乗る" they actually think something is entering an orbit? How about "心の琴線に触れる"?
I think you have abslutely no idea what you are talking about. What's more, most of it is just caused by frustration.
But let's continue:
"Yeah, take a bloke from Hokkaido, make him speak to a bloke from Okinawa. Enjoy the misunderstandings."
Hokkaido and Okinawa are how many km apart from each other? In my tiny home country - which could fit more than 10 times between Hokkaido and Okinawa - people from provinces more than 50km away from the capital need subtitles on television to be understood!!

"rjd_jr: In previous posts you have decried pornography. Why the turnaround? You claim porn provides 'pleasure and happpiness', but joust over a year ago it was a path that leads to 'deviance and crime'. Why is this situation OK when last year it wasn't?"
My dear bvbpblbz. In my country we have a saying: only donkeys never change their minds. Think about it. Have you never changed your mind about anything? If yes, you know what that makes you.

"From our perspective we meet a lot of Europeans who think that they are always right and the US is always wrong. I'm going to go out on a limb and make a wild guess and say that that thought has never even entered your mind."

"Old buddy, I would tend to imagine that electrical cables are much more flexible than sewers systems."
Come on mate. If they would have been under the ground every single earthquake would result in hundreds of places having to be digged up repaired and put under the ground again.
"In an earthquake (particularly as well demonstrated in the Great Hanshin earthquake) fallen power lines prevented easy access for emergency vehicles and more than on person was electrocuted from live broken dangling wires."
True. But how often do earthquakes like that happen? How often do small ones happen? It is a choice between having to dig them up every 2 weeks vs having to be careful every 100 years.

"the japanophile who actually has little or no experience of the place but cant stop spouting nonsense about it"
The only reason why you think he has little or no experience being that he doesn't whine and whine all the time? If that is called "experience" I hope I can have as little of it as possible.
