I didn't see the sewer system blow crap everywhere after the earthquake yesterday and they don't run pipes above our heads.

How thick is the sewer? How much can it be stretched before the connection is broken? Repeat the same questions for an electric wire.

Well, "accidentally" invading a country as a revenge for the actions of a few lunatics completely unrelated to that country, and killing hundreds of thousands out of hate for 1 person are in general not seen as very positive things by the majority of the world's population.

This report does not really come as a surprize.

"They are such eye-sores and I don't understand why they don't hurry up and bury all of them."

Let's think together. Put all cables under the ground, and wait for a quake like we had yesterday.

How many percentage of Japan would be out of electricity due to broken cables? I say around 40%, all the way down to the Kanto area.

THAT is why they are not under the ground.

"Japanese in Tokyo outnumber foreigners a gazzillion to one."

In Tokyo? Are you sure? And in Akihabara? It's possible close to 10 to 1 or something like that.

The words "is it over yet?" have never come to mind as often as during the last few months. The time it takes for Americans to pick 1 out of 2 candidates for just 1 of their 2 parties... Incredible. If the US would have a few more parties every election would take several decades...

I don't know really why the "while his parents are in comic cafe" is needed.

Is "while his parents are at work" better? "while his parents are at home"?

This is just the typical JT attempt to get the "Japanese parents suck" bashing going.

"I suppose it depends on the context and how it is used; similar to the label "Jew" which is not a bad word but when said in a certain tone/context is racist..."

Interesting point! You should try to write a post about Jews here once in a while: most of them get removed. The reason is that some already see the word "Jew" as a bad word, which is pretty strange to me.

All words used for calling minorities gradually end up being a "bad" word. I can't even say which word is the correct word in my home country now for calling Black people (is "Black people" still OK in English?). I feel it changes every half year.

The funny thing is that in most cases this phenomenon is driven by people not belonging to the minority itself. I very rarely hear Black people complaining about what they are called (unless it is one of the very old words), same for Jewish people, etc.

On the other hand, look at the foreigners in Japan!! They will insist the meaning of not only the word "gaijin" but also "gaikokujin" is bad, even if it isn't. It's telling for a population that sees racism and discrimination everywhere.

"Gaijin" is as racist or non-racist as the word "foreigner". How many here get offended when they hear the word "foreigner"? None, I guess. How about "alien"? It is often used, and to me it sounds MUCH more offending than "gaijin". But I guess that fact does not fit with some people's prejudices...

Anyway, if "gaijin" is considered offensive by some, I wonder how they think about "gaijin-san", which is also frequently used.

You might want to check the last few though.

"Spa! is not out to tell these women how to live; rather, its message is to young men, and the message is: Gentlemen, learn how to cook, because once you’re married, it looks like you’ll be on your own."

Men will learn how to cook when women lear how to fix a car or mow the lawn, e.g. probably not within the next 200 years.

shugotokumaru "I would assert that anyone in any country who parades about chastising people for their "thoughtless, self-absorbed behavior" is rightfully looked upon as a vigilant, insecure psycho, regardless of their nationality or language skill."

Very well said. Read this forum very well, my friend, and you will notice quickly where this distorted on Japanese society many here suffer from come from: 90% of their stories are situated inside trains or on stations. The drunk salariman vomiting on the platform, the angry stares, etc etc. Connect the dots: for many here the only interaction with Japan happens with peole around them in the rush hour trains. Can we expect from these kind of people to have a correct view on Japanese society? Of course we can't.

As for Japanese language ability, many seem to think of it as a punishment when Japan asks us to learn their language. It is however exactly the oposite. What will those long term Japanese illiterate residents do when one day they meet with an accident here? Explain what happens and where it hurts over the telephone using body language?? You have to be able to take care of yourself. Some here can't do that, and are even proud of it. It is irresponsible behaviour. They are endangering themselves and others. On a less serious level you have the train stories: all interaction is limited to the rush hour, as these people are not capable of interacting with normal Japanese (who can't speak English). Result: they think they are being ignored, they feel frustrated and isolated.

Being stimulated to learn Japanese is a gift. It would take the JT public NOT to see that.

Well, thepossum, that was a rather off topic and pointless comment. I guess you are from a country that doesn't use subtitles too often.
