I play tennis every Sunday near a spot where the police regularly pull over drivers for speeding. I notice they love to target little cars with women drivers and are afraid of the the big truckers who usually go flying by. Those truckers are tough, sometimes violent, and they give the cops a hard time. The the police know this, so why fight with the truckers when they can fill their quota picking on the "weaker" drivers. Japanese police are a joke.

Sydenham, I have a Citibank NWA Gold card, which is not free. It cost 18,900/yr. Could you kindly tell me how you got a free one? Thanks.

I have a U.S. based AE Gold card (Delta) which costs $85/yr. I use it mainly for Costco. Hard to believe that 85% of Japanese pay cash at supermarkets, appliances stores, etc. What do they get back when you pay cash? NOTHING What do I get back when I use my Visa or AE card for a purchase? One FF mile for each 100 yen, and boy, does it add up--to the tune of one FREE trip to the U.S. every year (A 150,000 yen value!) When I stand in line at the checkout counter and watch (ignorant) Japanese shell out hugh amounts of cash for their purchases, all I can think is mottai-nai.

Amazing story. I wonder what the chances would be of a Japanese passenger reporting such a sighting. Most Japanese seem to have the attitude that "It's none of my business" or "I don't want to cause a fuss." That is the "Shi-gata-ga-nai mentality."

I bought this book and found it to be a wonderful read. This kind of thing happened in other parts of Japan, too, including here in Oita Prefecture where I live. The villagers in Takeda, Oita, rather than trying to bury the past, have errected a monument to the B-29 airmen who perished, and they hold a memorial ceremony to honor their memory every May 5th, the day of the crash. An impressive act of courage and rememberance on their part.(This is the crew from which 8 surviving airmen were taken to Kyushu University Hospital for live vivisections, dying on the "operating table.") This is a book that is hard to put down once you start reading it--I highly recommend it.

Yes, that last line in the article sums it up: How do you find a trace of humanity when the Japanese Imperial Army was 95% inhumane?

I hope the movie plays in many places in Japan, but probably not. The theaters are scared to death of those right wing sound trucks and their threats. Is this a democracy, or what?

The constant public appeals for a resolution of the problem that we get in the Japanese media won't solve anything. I am really getting tired of it--every single citizen in J. knows about and feels sorry about their plight. Who are they appealing to, anyway? NK does not watch NHK, and even if they did, they could give a damn about J. public opinion.

The abductee's families should be more critical of their own govt., which is so weak in international diplomacy as to be pathetic. J. govt. needs to be more forceful and imaginative on this issue, but instead they are hopeless, arguing in the diet like children about who said what, etc. Meanwhile, thousands are losing jobs. What a joke the J. govt. is, and a very bad one at that.

China is just too big and too close for this not to happen. The Japanese might as well get used to it, just as America has had to get used to hoards of Mexican immigrants.

Unlike the Mexicans however, the Chinese quickly learn Japanese. Overally, I think it is more positive than negative. Maybe the only way for Japan to get over its xenophobia.

The people here are just not safety conscious. I don't know how many times I have seen a mother driving with her seatbelt on while her young child is standing the front seat. Go figure.

You wouldn't want to eat those factory, chemical-fed chickens anyway. They spend their whole life in small wire cages and never see the light of day. If they had been raised out in the open (free range) like animals should be, this would not have happened. I'll pay more for free-range anyday.

This is just one more example of immature Japanese boys who have been so spoiled by their mothers that they can not take rejection of any kind. Often they kill the girl. You see this in the news here a lot, and I think it is more prevalent in Japan than in other countries.
