The death penalty is being debated but the root of this story is the fact that the police fabricated evidence or with held it to get a conviction rather than the truth. How many others are convicted wrongly in Japan allowing the culprits to be free. If the truth was the issue in an investigation, the death penalty issue would be a lesser problem because there would be a far higher probability that the convict was in fact the perpetrator.

Very unfortunate and really probably best described as an accident but tragic. I have noted from my being a SCUBA instructor in the past that although Japan is surrounded by water and has pools every where and fishing is such a big sport here, they are the worst people I know of for watermanship and drownings don't really surprise me.

An 8 year old boy can play by himself pretty much unsupervised except for a mobile phone and then at 1 am mum thinks its a bit too late for him to be out. Stranger danger should not even be an issue if the kid was better supervised. What do some parents think? When I was 8 I was already tucked into bed no later than 9pm safe and sound so I could wake up and be ready and healthy for the next day.

How about kids in the cargo hold or pay full fare or double for their trouble to others instead of half.

Its OK because they are foot ball pros or top teachers in future life so they deserve leniency and the victim was obviously a looser who got drunk so deserved the rape. Gee there are some generally accepted screwed up ideas in this culture.

Maybe Richard being in Japan has something to do with the computer glitch that grounded some airlines in the other story.

I am glad the author was limited to the driving theme. I agree with tokyo34, if you don't like it that much why even do it and it would be a reasonable guess that there are alot of other things the author hates about Japan. Japanese driving is different to western countries but some of the points in the article are just not valid comparisons or even true. How about this, there are not that many speed cameras, red light cameras, police are less inclined to enforce rules like the in western countries, truck drivers are not worse in Japan than other countries, there are some really nice places to drive to, toll roads on the W/E in the kansai area are 1000Y max, drivers tend to be less aggressive in Japan, insurance is no more or less than many countries, shaken is no more or less than in many other countries also. Park in a no parking zone in any country and risk the fine. BTW correct me if I am wrong gogogo but I think it is now a requirement to have proof of parking Japan wide which is not a bad idea really but a pain in the neck also.

All very well and good untill the rainy season hits. Even a seasoned cyclist would find it difficult to get to work and look the part after having been drenched in heavy rain.

What a disaster that will end up. You end up buying an expensive ticket for a nice ride and end up in a code share on a QF which then code share Jetstar. Code share has become the biggest scam of the airline industry. Maybe one world is crap too.

That would be a fair comment if cats are not native as would be the case in Australia but are cats native to Japan?

How can police know if a gaijin looking person is a gaijin or not and thus enforce fines? Its only ever comes down to one issue which is money, collect more taxes, more social security money and helth insurance to support the economy in a bad time. The only thing is it is dressed as something else. Seeing how they can loose money (recent social security problem in mind) I don't like the idea of entrusting money to any Govt.

I too am a fan of Linux but some of the programs I run need to be on windows, actually have a Linux certification. Without doubt there are many things and programs that Linux does better than windows such as overall operation but alas I am stuck with windows. Won't be upgrading to the new improved packaging with the same old program in inside though.

Did they tickle the truth out of him after tying him up with rope? Maybe threatened him with the prospect of being put in a bath of eels then shown on TV. This is a really funny story, they didn't create any stress to the public at all, its comic relief, far better than the stupid comedians I have seen on TV.

Hmmm I never had trouble with the kids doing the wrong thing after they realized they would get in trouble and following the rules was more fun. Obviously the story is not from a long termer. Mind you, I was asked not to let the parents see my methods but the end result was the parent were happy because the kids were happy in the end. I wonder about one comment of teaching English to Japanese requiring a license after having seen many teachers with more degrees than a thermometer who were just pathetic. I think many kids get stupidity from their parents and I don't mean geneticaly.
