Truly inspirational! I agree with Moondog - most of us don't dare take leaps. Mostly we just watch with a bit of envy the few who do. Congratulations, Saito-San! Well done and welcome home.

Maybe the Powers That Be were thinking along the lines of "Cool Down, Japan" rather than Hip, "Groovy", Cool Japan. As for toilets and foreigners, I'm sure I'm not the first to put forth the idea that aggressively marketing Washlets to the aging nations in the West could very well be the answer to Japan's economic woes. It's fairly common these days to find a box of diaper wipes within arm's reach of the toilets in the homes America's senior citizens these days in an attempt to be "fresh". I think there are thousands upon thousands of folks who'd be absolutely thrilled to have their own Washlet and would pay big bucks to be a proud (and cleaner) owner!

@zichi: Has your friend in Nara's father been found? I deeply hope so. I, too, have dear friends in Nara and fortunately they all live in the northern part, in Nara "bonchi" so have only had to deal with a lot of rain these past several days. But, like after 3.11, they are feeling a lot of so-called survivor guilt. It's such a tragedy what's happened in Totsukawa-mura and in Wakayama. Such quiet, peaceful and very remote places now mired in much sadness and loss. RIP

Years ago I made several visits to Totsukawa-mura in south central Nara prefecture. The mountain sides are extremely steep, so steep, a unique architectural design was developed so the homes could "hug" the mountains. It's so remote in that region, folks don't speak Kansai-ben as in the rest of Nara-ken, but Totsukawa-ben which was derived from the language spoken in Edo. A real jewel and the kindest people in the world. And now so much loss and sadness. RIP.

Reminds me that my own honeymoon, over 30 years ago, lasted just a short weekend. Best wishes to Japan's newest prime minister and his somewhat unusual cabinet.

My impression of American Jay Leno is that his is a true gentleman and one class act. He deserves his top spot as the current king of late night talk shows. Shimada-san can't be compared to Mr. Leno on any level.

Bottom line: Sometimes sh*t happens and there's not much that can be done to prepare for it. Mother Nature is the mightiest force on the planet. Like everyone, I deeply feel that the 3.11 losses were and will always be the most devastating, not only for those directly involved, but for the nation and world together, on many, many levels. So we learn from these losses and move forward. Don't dwell on the mistakes - we all make them. Don't play the Blame Game - that's really not the most productive or proactive way to go. Wake up to the new day and do your best to move on and to move forward.

Wasn't super star Frank Sinatra rumored to have Mafia connections back in the day? Didn't seem to hurt his illustrious career any. Just sayin', that's all. I agree with* herefornow* - it's always about the bottom line most of the time.

Hummmm...Reminds me of the recent film, "Dear Doctor", starring the talented Shofukutei Tsurube as an extremely popular rural doctor. Isn't that film set in Tohoku, Japan?

I assume Vice President Biden's arrival will be in Tokyo? I, too, will be arriving in Japan on the 22nd, but at KIX so hopefully will not be impacted by the increased security needed for the VP. I, for one, feel his offcial visit is a good thing, not just a sightseeing political junket.

How does this projected economic spin-off of one trillion yen compare with the economic impact of the 1999 World Cup win by the US women's soccer team? Are they comparable or are we talking apples v.s. oranges? Regardless, what a boost for women's professional sports world-wide!

I have an idea that I wonder what others think about it: As a tribute to not only this great soccer team, Nadeshiko Japan, but equally as a tribute and reminder of those lost in the great Tohoku disaster, on every school girl's soccer jersey, sew a swatch of pink just like on the World Cup winning players' jerseys. A simple yet powerful gesture. What do you say, Japan?

Best wishes to talented Jero and the rest of the cast and crew of "Blues in the Night".
I heard Jero perform a mini concert in Berkeley, CA a few months ago - it was an enjoyable show. He was at Cal to receive the 2011 Berkeley Japan New Vision Award from the University of California, Berkeley’s Center for Japanese Studies. Jero was being recognized for his contributions toward "rekindling enthusiasm for enka among Japan’s younger generation and for encouraging fluent Japanese speakers from around the world to enter Japan’s entertainment and other industries." The 2010 recipient was esteemed actor/director/producer Clint Eastwood.
