The presence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama is truly a serene and beautiful sight.

During trying times, each person finds strength and the will to move forward in different ways. To the usual naysayers, please try not to be so critical. Healing comes in many forms and all forms have value.

Why wasn't this article filed under the Business or even Sports category, instead of the Entertainment category? Just wondering... I found "Freakonomics" very enlightening when I read it several years ago.

I'm so sorry that the victim's adult daughter felt so overwhelmed with caring for her father 24/7 (assuming that was the case). There are so many unknown variables here to be able to fairly access the situation. May they both rest in peace.

All this past month I've been wondering how many of the folks who didn't or couldn't make it to higher ground, intentionally made a choice to stay put in their homes because the sheer magnitude of the earthquake told them that this WAS the Big One. And maybe some just thought that Life post such a huge earthquake wouldn't be worth living. I would never question, fault or judge anyone who made this choice. Isn't a bit of fatalism part of the Japanese psyche or spirit? Of course, we'll never know the truth to this. And many would believe, that life and death, in the end, it's all in God's hands anyway.

Well, since Lawson is not a non-profit entity but a for-profit business, this is perfectly to be expected. I wouldn't be surprised if, at the end of the day, Lawson's ends up operating these moblie units at a loss. Will there be more than one vehicle to serve the entire region? Good luck!

It's funny how most posters seem to assume the deceased young woman was with a man - she could have been with a woman and the games the two might have been playing went all wrong. Just sayin'...Regardless, may she rest in peace.

Japan is such a trustworthy society. One of a kind in this day and age, very sad to say. Such an interesting dilemna for the local police.

It would seem that Dr. N. Stuart Harris' varied set of skills acquired through his medical education, training and life experiences makes him uniquely qualified to provide medical relief to those injured in the quake and tsunami affected region. What a valuable asset he has surely proven to be. And Dr. Harris' service is another example of the vast benefits (ROI/Return on Investment) to Japan resulting from its investment in the JET Program.

I agree with the moderator reminding everyone to please keep the comments civil. I think no matter where you live in the world, the first days of spring gives us all a special sense of hope and rebirth. In northern Califirnia where I live, the almond trees have all finished blooming and now the hills are yellowing with the wild mustard blossoms. All too soon, the intense summer heat will cause it all to dry up and the once green hills will be brown for many months. Then it's fire season, which is the region's annual reminder of the transience of life and property. Where ever you are, please enjoy the momentary beauty of this fragile, short-lived season.

This is not a time for cynicism, but rather to show support for Japan through your prayers, through sports play, in whatever ways feel best for each individual. Gambatte Nippon!

This is absolutely the saddest story yet relating to the aftermath of the the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. How can these victims, both the dead and the living, ever "rest in peace"? How can there ever be blessed "closure"?

In the previous version of this article, before obvious editing took place, an interview with a man named "Shuji" who was part of a recovery team and who described the horrific condition of the bodies which had been found after many days in water. Not a pretty description at all. Much too graphic for many of the early readers.

As the parent of a former JET ALT as well as having myself spent two years after graduating college teaching English in Japan myself on the MEF program, this tragic death particularly hits home. My sincerest condolences to Ms. Anderson's family and friends. She will remain in the hearts of many, both in the US and in Japan.

As for riding bikes as the only initial means of transportation after such a calamity as this, I think most senior citizen Americans wouldn't be able to do this, either because they've become too fat, are too out-of-shape or just have plain forgotten how to ride a bike after so many decades of always driving everywhere by car. (BTW, I'm a native-born Californian.) I truly think for most this would be true. How pathetic!

I agree with the previous poster - maybe a bit of TMI (too much information). On the other hand, this is, most sadly, the reality of it all. It's all so overwhelming and nearly impossible to fathom. May all the victims please rest in peace.

One of the most depressing points made in this article is that folks in their 50s are considered senior citizens!!! Tell me this ain't so!!!!
