And another thing sdmsec. Maybe you are superman, and can juggle a political career and terminal wife with a brave smile and never-ending enthusiasm.

This supports my claim that Sen Edwards is selfish and doesn't have integrity. He made commitments to his wife prior to embarking on his political career. Whether he broke that commitment for political power or for personal gratification it still points to a lack of integrity.

sdmsec, how focused would you like? I put it to you that his career in politics has removed focus from his wife 1000 times more than his affair. In fact, I doubt Mr. Edward's affair kept him away from his wife any more than he would have been away already. His mistress was very near his work.

How does this counter my claim that Sen Edwards is selfish? How does this counter my claim that Sen Edwards lacks integrity? What relevance does have to any of my claims?

    skipthesong,

Your statement seems to say that "no man" could resist an extremely attractive woman coming on to them. However, I refute that claim and say that MANY men have resisted such because they valued their integrity more than their sexual desires.

To me integrity is about making and keeping commitments and being honest.

Sen. Edwards seems to have demonstrated a lack of integrity in both cases.

Would you be happier if he suffered a complete mental breakdown or let himself get frustrated to the point that he did nothing but give his wife hell during her final days?

    1. Pure selfishness. What else would I expect from a politician? During the time his wife is having the struggle of her life he should be focused on his own needs. To me that's plain ole fashioned selfishness.

    2. Any man who is so unstable as to have a "mental breakdown" over this is unfit to be a Senator. My goodness, what else could tip such an unstable person over the edge? Could this man be trusted with secrets regarding the security of our nation? How easy would it be for enemy agents to compromise him?

    3. Any man who would give his wife hell during her final days because he can't penetrate her body deserves to be castrated with a rusty knife. He's just one step away from being a rapist.

While my father wasted away from lung cancer I did without many things (including intimate time with my wife). Interestingly, my mind was preoccupied with comforting my father and tending to HIS needs. I felt it an honor every time I did something for him that would normally have seemed disgusting to me. Of course, I recognize that there are honorable people in this world and there are selfish people as well. I'll leave it to you to determine which category I place Sen. Edwards.

Seriously, I think you should consider taking a little dip in some liquid nitrogen so you don't have to worry about such potential mental anguish and uncontrolable frustration. It might take the tension right off your mind.

Government intervention in the energy industry is a big part or our current problem. So what do these two candidates propose? More government intervention.

The government interventions of the past have caused or exacerbated the "crisis" we face today. The interventions have come in the form of special tax law for oil companies, EPA interference in the creation of new refineries, and prohibiting drilling in many areas.

Now these two argue over whether we should privilege the nuclear industry or the wind-farm industry, the corn farmers or makers of hydrogen fuel. They seem to agree on the concept that all Americans should pay (via taxes) to enrich the few (via government incentives). They only differ in who they want to privilege.

If Senator McCain or Obama really cared about campaign financing they'd quit addressing the symptoms (media fairness, lobbyists and campaign contributions) and strike at the cause (big government involvement in so many industries and our personal lives).

Our arguments shouldn't be over which forms of energy a central planner is choosing, but over which forms of energy we as consumers find best. Perhaps Senators McCain and Obama shoud just give a a "five year plan".

Was there something in the article that I missed. I didn't get the impression that the witnesses were seeking revenge. Perhaps posters on this forum seem to want revege, but it is proper and necessary for there to be witnesses.

A desire to be a witness doesn't imply to me that the person necessarily wants to seek revenge or to view a "barbaric" act. Perhaps a family member feels it's their duty to assure that the lawful judgement is fulfilled (brought to closure). Perhaps a family member feels it's their duty to be a witness so that other family members don't need to witness the execution personally but still be assured that the sentence was carried out.

I don't think the folks who watched the killer die were necessarily seeking personal closure or revenge. Perhaps they were fulfilling their duty as "witnesses". The family members, press, or whoever else was present can testify to the fact that the killer was punished according to the judgements of the law. Most official acts require witnesses.

Thumbs up to Texas for standing for states' rights against their former governor and now semi-tyrannical President. Thumbs up to Texas for asserting that the citizens of Texas are subject only to the authority granted to them by the U.S. Constitution and aren't subject to the "morality" dictated by foreign cultures, foreign courts, and foreign governments. Now, if only we could force our own U.S. federal government to do the same... keep out of other sovereign nations' internal business and keep other nations out of our internal business.

    Oil addiction

Apparently, oil has continued to be the easiest and/or cheapest means of meeting our energy needs. When someone invents a better mousetrap (cheaper, simpler, etc) I and other consumers the world around will jump on board.

I'll agree that the U.S. government has "intervened" and therefore the energy market isn't trully "free". For example, the government has restricted nuclear power, denied construction of new refineries, etc.

As I believe much of the energy problems today are based on Washington interference I wish Obama and McCain would both adopt the following as their energy policy: hands off.

    smithinjapan,

Are you talking about an apology or reparations? Perhaps you could read my post more closely in context - notice the quote to which I responded.

And your assumptions about me are inaccurate - I'm a pinkish-tan upper-class male.

I guess since I'm pinkish-tan and not black my opinions on the subject are automatically invalid - despite the fact that I'm an American and this House of Representatives is supposed to represent me.

Please, from here on only African-American posters allowed.

Of course, if the Chinese choose the U.S. Constitution they'll also need to shut down judicial activism through the built-in checks and balances as well. I didn't want to leave out credit (or shall I say blame) where it's due.

How to set up a system that minimizes such possibilities is a question which has attracted a lot of attention inside China.

They should seriously consider the U.S. Constitution - still the greatest American export. Maybe they'll even be smart enough to limit the likes of FDR, LBJ, and GWB to their constitutional powers. At least they'll have hind-sight of what to look out for.

So...are they going to send out checks or what?

The price has already been payed in full by the blood of young Americans. If you want reparations I'd say just hand it over to the relatives of the soldiers who bled out their lives on the battlefield and died miserably of disease in POW camps. The debt, apology, atonement has been paid in full.

Amen. It seems like the healthcare industry would be greatly simplified, more free, and less expensive if we just went back to paying for routine stuff out of our own pockets and purchase insurance for catastrophic medical events.

    Betzee,

I appreciate the analysis, and I agree with it.

Perhaps I didn't make it clear earlier that I agree we need a balanced budget (or better yet a surplus to allow paying down the federal debt). I think it would be much more productive to achieve these goals by eliminating foreign aid altogether (including the Iraq war) than by raising taxes (for reasons I've stated earlier).

Anyhoooo... I've also wondered about the tenuous link between employment and health insurance - what is the relationship really? I can't quote a reliable source, but I've read somewhere that the government pretty much dictated that companies of a certain size had to offer health insurance to employees - creating the HMO boom. It's no wonder that we've lost personal freedom in our healthcare once the responsibility was removed from the individual and placed in the hands of an organization.

    Betzee,

Thanks for your responses. I've recognized that you try to give reasoned explanations when you post, and I appreciate that - even though I often disagree with you.

We're going to have to raise taxes in order to cut our borrowing which is part of the reason the dollar has sunk so low and, in the process, driven energy prices up.

I agree with you that we desparately need to stop going deeper into debt. I agree that the dollar is headed to the toilet. However, I think we can begin to not only balance the budget but to *pay down the debt *by simply cutting out foreign aid completely followed by eliminating social programs over time (10 years maybe?). We need to ween people off of government dependence in all its forms.

Too much of the wealth generation during the past eight years has been on paper. That's a major part of the problem.

I'm not sure how this relates or refutes my claim that increased taxes will burden and dis-incent the very people needed to generate wealth. The bottom line being that nothing will generate "real" wealth (as opposed to paper wealth) except producing something with "real" value. That's what entrepreneurs (sp?) and businesses do.

Suge asserts: Only Bush then McCain can save us. They are experts on the economy and are both honest guys.

If they're experts on the economy I guess that makes me a genius. Actually, for all I know they may be experts. However, that would mean that they're doing what they're doing on purpose which would make it fraudulent and criminal.

Suge asserts: Obama would decimate the economy

I agree with you 100% here. However, if Sen Obama were to draw back from many foreign interventions we'd see a short-term boost to the economy. The decimation of our economy would show up long after his term is over as social programs that hang like a millstone around our children's and children's children's necks.

There isn't an electable party left that in action supports the Constitution or the ideals of small, distributed government.

Bottom line: Getting us out of this mess will entail raising taxes and cutting services no matter who is elected.

I agree with cutting services, but I disagree that raising taxes with get us out of this mess.

If the problem is the weak U.S. economy how will burdening citizens and businesses with more taxes strengther the economy? The government doesn't produce wealth - they just re-distribute it. We need business and industry to be stronger if we expect the U.S. economy to be stronger.

I certainly don't imply by this that I believe in any form of corporate welfare. I just think that it doesn't make sense to burden and dis-incent the very people and organizations that are needed to produce more wealth.

Barack Obama …blamed “irresponsible decisions” by the Bush administration and Wall Street for the country’s economic woes

Partially correct: He conveniently failed to mention the Congress, the Federal Reserve, and the American people themselves. Is he too dense to miss that, or just too disingenuous?

Obama said the economy needs both short- and long-term fixes, including another round of “stimulus” measures… and a longer-term focus on renewable energy… and on universal health care...

Any stimulus package that doesn’t come from cutting the federal budget makes the problem worse. Also, long-term government interference in the energy industry and the healthcare industry will be an economic disaster for all future generations. In fact, it’s precisely government interference in these two industries that have driven costs we’re experiencing today.

We… have to provide some short-term relief,” Obama said. “People are hurting right now.

No we don't! U.S. citizens need to accept some short-term pain now to avoid much worse pain down the road. Most adults understand the idea of accepting an inoculation now to avoid a disease in the future. Could the U.S. leaders quit feeding us placebos? Also, I haven't profited from these bad loans nor have I compromised my financial future by going into debt. Why should I feel the pain to bail out those who haven't acted responsibly?

Present at the meeting were AFL-CIO President… former treasury secretary… former Federal Reserve chairman… former New Jersey Sen… Google chairman and CEO… New Jersey Gov… the former head of Wall street investment firm… Billionaire investor.

Let’s see who’s represented: unions, Federal Reserve, Senator, high-tech CEO, state Governor, Wall Street investment broker, and a billionaire investor. All of the people who stand to gain or lose from federal government interference in free markets. These people want to make sure the field tilts in their direction, even if that means most other American’s savings and efforts are de-valued.

John McCain said the culprit… was the administration’s wasteful spending.

Only partially true. Who does this idiot think authorizes the spending? It’s in the control of his own and Senator Obama’s branch of government. Has he forgotten that’s why we have a Constitution that distributed power among the branches?

As president, I have committed to balancing the budget by the end of my first term,” McCain said.

I’ll believe it when you do it.

We can’t afford… to keep on doing the same things we’ve been doing,” said Obama. “We have to change course… he offered few details about his plans.

Few details... I wonder why he won’t just come on out and reveal his change of course.

He warned his economic advisers that the current crunch was “a direct result of putting off tough decisions for too many years.

Amen to that Sen Obama. Are you going to eliminate all forms of foreign and domestic welfare? Both individual and corporate? If not, you don’t really represent a change – only a shift in focus. Are you going to get us out of the Social Security mess? We simply don’t have the wealth as a nation to offer welfare to anyone. As an individual if I’m up to my eyeballs in debt how can I bail someone else out of their financial troubles? Why do we think our nation can do what’s impossible? It isn't rational.

I’ve laid out an economic strategy in this campaign that I think will provide short-term relief and long-term growth,” Obama said.

Is there an official web site where I can read Sen Obama’s economic strategy? Thanks in advance.
