One phrase of the 2nd Amendment is often overlooked: "the security of a free State".
Due to the war for independence that was still very vivid in the framers' minds they understood that a free people must have the right to bear arms in order to throw off an oppressive government - whether foreign or domestic.
I think the single greatest intent of the 2nd Amendment is to allow the people to keep government subservient to themselves rather than the other way around.
In the language of the Declaration of Independence: "it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security." We the people couldn't do that without arms.

Tiumverve:
Well, to be more precise the law (Article IV Section III) states, "Those who oppose the great prophet Mugabe shall be denied victuals until the decease of the body."
Article X Section II states, "As treason consists of opposition to the ruling party the punishment set forth is beatings about the head and groin areas until accused criminal is dead."
And you missed one more: Article III Section IX states, "Whereas those who oppose the ruling party are guilty of treason (see Article X Section II) it follows that thier spouse and offspring are traitors as well pushishable by mutilation by machete and application of fire until said traitor is dead."

While I can fault Obama on almost all of his political views I can't fault him for this choice. At least he shows a spark of political intelligence to not tie his own hands for no reason. After all, isn't he in this race to win?
While I could never vote for the Socialist Obama this article reminds me why it will be very hard to vote for McCain - he's just a lesser socialist without a clue. His campaign finance reforms effectively give greater power to the press at the expense of the people who are paying the bills in the USA.

The Britains are very short-sighted. Christmas is just around the corner. Where do they think fruit-cakes come from - the fruit-cake fairy? They'll be begging her pardon when the spiced pine cones don't arrive.

Good one.
So as not to exclude the judiciary: The Massachusettes Supreme Court will legislate from the bench that all such pacts must be honored once entered into.

Now that this has hit the news I'm sure congress will be holding multiple hearings followed by new laws to "restrict pregnancy pacts by minors". Money will also be appropriated in the billions of dollars to stop this epidimic.

Not really... you just shift the question to whether the swimmers can shave or not. And specifically which regions of the body can you shave?
Also, would the IOC have to then regulate the use of herbal "reducers" (I'm talking about the opposite of the spam email "enhancers") which help cut down on drag?

“Sooner rather than later we are going to accuse the MDC and the party leadership of being liable and responsible for those crimes of violence,”
I concur with Mugabe. The MDC is responsible for the violence in many ways - such as putting their faces in front of mob's fists and clubs. Why won't the violent MDC stop their wives from putting their wrists and ankles in the way of men swinging machetes? Why do they insist on lying bound in their huts while the hut burns down?
Bad MDC. Stop the violence!

So has everyone – conservative and liberal alike – become drunken on the socialist’s red kool-aid?
There seems to be an underlying assumption in all these posts that the wealthy should pay more taxes.
In a nation like the USA that is supposed to be based on democratic ideals and the rule of law how is it that so many citizens feel it’s OK to specifically target one segment of our society? I thought that each citizen should have “equal protection under the law”. Why is it acceptable to discriminate against a person based on his level of income? Would it be just under the law to require the citizens of a small, specific geographic sector to pay more taxes? How about based on religion, skin color, or political party affiliation?
In theory shouldn’t each citizen pay an equal portion of the nation’s expenses?
Based on the principles of democracy and rule of law I would suggest that the most just form of taxation would be either (1) a citizen tax – take the government’s annual budget and divide it by every living citizen; or (2) a voter tax – each person who wants the right to vote pays (level of taxation = level of representation).
However, to be pragmatic I’d settle for a simple flat tax where all citizens pay equally based on a percentage of income. This doesn’t strike me as principled, but I’d still settle for it.
P.S. This is my first post here, and I'm not trying to alienate everyone. I've seen many of your well-reasoned posts, and I'm just a little bit surprised that everyone seems to accept the premise that the wealthy should pay more taxes than their fellow citizens. I hope to stimulate your thinking on this topic. Thanks.
