China is in a land-grab mode, not only with respect to these islands but with all countries bordering China. Commentaries like the INSIPID piece above - and tiptoe around the REAL threat of China's IMPERIALISM coupled with their immense military capacity.

This letter of protest comes at the same time that dissident LEADERS in China are being placed u nder hOUSE ARREST. Tiananmen Mothers group leader , Ding Zilin, and her husband, Jiang Peikun, disappeared from their Beijing home Thursday (Oct 14) (The Tiananmen Mothers are among the most outspoken critics of Communist Party rule).

Outspoken author and religious activist Yu Jie also has been placed under effective house arrest . The squeezing of dissidents is connected to the annual meeting of the China Communist Central Committee, which starts this Friday. The party’s leadership is nervous about mushrooming protests . AND, there is polarization within - - as there are strong voices that want to see some reform in the country’s repressive political system.

To me, this guy seems to be nothing more that a nationalist hellbent on blaming America and anything foreign in general for all Japan`s problems.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm . . . interesting. And I feel he did not go far enough. Though, i think the phenomena surrounding this change in language have a lot to do with globalization . . .Marshall McLuhan wrote that when a people change their mode of technology there is a ripple effect in other aspects of their culture and communication.

    kirakira :

There are many reasons for Japans loss of cultural identity, but using Katakana is definitely NOT one of them.

READ the sentence again. It does NOT say the over-use of Katakana is a CAUSE. IT says the overuse is a REFLECTION of a deeper issue. Which is the writers point in the article BTW.

I have pretty much given up on Japanese women, after a honeymoon period of about 4 years. There just isn't anything under the surface . . . is in fact much more like a giant sucking void where any substance needs to be.:

It all depends on the person really. There are Japanese women ( & men) who are smart and substantive - and, there the 'space cadets' . . . just like in the US or England or France . . .

It's also women's problem. They pretend to be what they are not. Problem with Japanese women is that they play too much games compare to Western women. Women of two faces of illusion really comes out.

Very true. ** What you see - is not what you get!** BEWARE foreign guys !!!!

No wonder so many Japanese women turn their hopes to westerners and find their 'Real Man'

LOL . . ONLY to discover that these "FOREIGN Men" are no different - - and sometimes even more chauvinistic.

Ban Katakana! That will solve all the economic and social issues in Japan!

The point he is making . . .language is a reflection of the psycho-cultural consciousness of a people. Japan with its profoundly rich cultural heritage and beautiful disciplines is losing connection with its identity. This is reflected in the absurdly over-abundant use of English converted to katakana.

Sixty-five years of postwar progress and economic triumph have not altered – but may even have deepened – a fatal flaw in Japan’s circumstances, namely its virtual colonial dependence on its former occupier, the United States

He hits it right on the head !

Comfort them ! Kids cry inthose situations because they are anxious. Make them feel safe - - they WILL calm down.

    once again, framing foreigners..

"Framing foreigners" has nothing to do with the story. . . 'Foreigners' who commit crimes should be identified, whatever their nationality.

    .

Condemn China but keep doing business with them

Condemnation of China is for its DISREGARD for human rights, its denial of freedoms - ( like freedom of speech, freedom of religion) -, its abject indifference to the dehumanizing impact of its predatory capitalism, AND is CLAWING territory from SOVEREIGN countries , like India. . . The western world will not remain silent with regard to a double standard set by China . . .PERHAPS boycotting or implementing sanctions might be a way to tighten the noose around China. CHINA NEEDS the west.

The pressure is on China . . .in giving the peace prize to China’s leading dissident – the Norwegian Nobel Committee provided a strong reminder: The world expects China to start acting as a responsible global leader. That means embracing human rights and political freedoms

Why should he receive the DEATH PENALTY ???? According to the story the two survived . . . It is rather silly news item ----- considering other more NEWS-WORTHY event happening in Japan.

So what was all that talk of Japan sinking into irrelevance? Japanese have won quite a string of Nobel Prizes the past few years

True. They remain cutting edge in numerous disciplines. It is the Japanese character not to flaunt itself.
