Why do we only hear about strict interpretation of the Quran when it advocates violence? I'm sure there are situations where love and tolerance are dictated. I hope.

You can bet Mr. Snipes' "prison" will be more a resort than a jail. Instead of "3 meals and a cot", it will be "Mr. Snipes, would you like champagne during your pedicure?" and "Your tee off time is 9 am."

Actually, it's not a crime to "not pay your taxes". It's a crime to "not file your income tax return".
He's going to jail for "three misdemeanor counts of willful failure to file his income tax returns", not for failure to pay taxes once he filed. That would have been ok.

Whenever I see a new type of canned coffee I'll try it at least once. When I first got here, I wanted to try every kind. But there's too many, and more every day it seems. Still, a warm can on a cold morning waiting for the train, mmmmmmmm.

Beelzebub - I realize the article only mentioned North Koreans. My post was meant as a statement about how wide-spread the problem of sham marriages is here in Japan. So, my eyes don't require checking.

"illegally disposing of a body" is the initial charge so they can hold the suspect. It's easier to prove because there just has to be a body. Later, after the evidence has been gathered and the prosecution is ready, the charge will be changed to murder.

Sarge is right "something is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it". Diamonds are a prime example. They are extremely common. In some areas (not all of course) they are mined (I kid you not) by lines of workers who each have a tin can hanging from their neck. They just walk along and pick them up off of the ground like picking berries. But DeBeers holds a nearly-exclusive monopoly on the diamond supply. They control the number and quality of stones allowed to enter the world market, thereby controlling their value. I once saw an expose about DeBeers that showed small mountains of loose stones in their warehouses.
