A girl is dead. But I wonder was it a random attack or did they know each other? 'What is a 17-year-old Romanian boy doing in Japan?' Well, he might be studying here, or one of his parents may be Japanese, or he might be on vacation, or his father is a diplomat. What does that matter? He made a bad choice and will have to take responsibility for it. But he won't be leaving Japan for quite a while.....

Grow up Bruce. Why are Americans so hung up on their so-called Second Amendment Rights? How about a Third Amendment that states nobody has the right to have a gun except soldiers and other law enforcement officers? Nothing wrong with amending an amendment that needs amending!

Time is coming for a surprise strike on NK. No one will be very sad if their power centre is taken out. Although there is the West's hypocritical argument of, "You can't have nuclear weapons even though we have them", NK really is a loose cannon (nuclear weapon) and Iran isn't far behind. Not saying they should be nuked but a strategic conventional missile strike might do the trick and put them a few decades behind in their nuclear capabilities.

Agree about how the air in Tokyo has become much cleaner. On clear nights (weather-wise) you can see a lot of stars in the sky. Never used to see many. Hybrid cars are everywhere and that must be having a pretty big impact.

Pretty hard to know Tokyo if you only stay for a few days. Amazing place really, but you just have to dig a bit deeper.

China's coal burning has tripled in the last 10 years and apparently they burn almost as much coal as all the other countries in the world combined! Scary (and unhealthy) stuff.

Agreed Ossan.
And China telling Japan to '...pursue a path of peaceful development' is a laugh. Japan is pretty peaceful in my book and has been for almost 70 years. But NK and China shouldn't push Japan too much. Imagine the outcry if Japan starts conducting missile tests in the area.....

Very sad. What a pointless waste of lives. Credit to the president of JGC for doing the right thing by helping to identify and bring the bodies back.

Tricky to get into the mind of someone else because they are exactly that....someone else. She made a decision (whether consciously or unconsciously) and now has to live with the consequences. Some people just can't handle things and freak out. But they don't know they are going to freak out until it happens. I feel sorry for all three of them.

No big surprise here. The number reported here is low I'd say. Basically, humans (as a species of the animal kingdom) aren't really designed to have just one partner. It's rare in nature and it's a battle for many to do!

"We attended today's White House meeting to discuss how to keep our children safe and were prepared to have a meaningful conversation about school safety, mental health issues, the marketing of violence to our kids and the collapse of federal prosecutions of violent criminals," the NRA said.
Love how the NRA doesn't want to mention the one word that is the main topic here......GUNS!!

Rep Dave Camp sounds a bit thick. Do Americans only stop spending after they have no money left and their credit cards are maxed out?! That's already too late.....!

This never-ending quest for apologies is just BS. How many times has Japan apologized? There is a long list. But it doesn't seem to make any difference because every year or two, a new government in another country thinks Japan should keep apologizing. I'm not a fan of Abe's but I'd also be a bit sick of the repetitive requests for apologies that have been made and are well-documented. Get over it Korea. Get over it China. It's time to move on and it's time to end this ridiculous game in order to win votes at home by acting tough. All it does is stir up tensions and that's the last thing this region needs. I guess the only long-term solution is people to people exchanges and cultural studies by the younger generations so that they learn it is people that make a country, not the military and not the government. The latter two are supposed to serve the people not turn them into aggressive, militant idiots. It's interesting that in English we call those who work for the government 'public servants' but they are much more highly regarded in Japan, China and Korea (and they seem to prefer the English expression 'public officials'.....A bit off topic but there you have it.

One other problem with IVF is that there are rare hereditary diseases that are very difficult to test for (and so aren't tested for) so occasionally you get a kid who has some rare disease and because of the privacy laws, the kid can't be treated. Yes, it's rare, but is it worth it?
