Yeah, like that 8" high walking, talking and kissing female robot. There's nothing wrong with that. It's completely normal for an adult man to have a love affair with an 8" robot, isn't it? Or, have I been in Japan too long?

Is it politically correct to call him black? Shouldn't he be addressed as a half African/American from Hawaii? It's odd that, one African/American can call another black, but if a European says the same he is a racist. Just my observation.

He's the only police officer in this photo, but I'm sure there are several more in the immediate vicinity.

Oh, really? Gees! I never would have thought have that. Thanks for pointing out the blatantly obvious.

In most large cities around the world police patrol in pairs or small groups. Never alone! What is one cop with a baton gonna do against half a dozen thugs? Run? If Japan is serious about security they had better get their act together. The police here do not have a presence, which every terrorist and loony knows.

I saw a pair of mid 30 b/men going at it this morning at the station. A lot of pushing, shoving and a few attempted bitch slaps, but nothing major. Of course, everybody else just had a quick look and kept on walking. I, on the other hand, stepped in and told them both to give up and go to work. Strangely enough, that's exactly what they did. It's clear the pressures of living in the most densely populated city on the planet is having an effect on everybody that lives here. In the eight years I've been here I have definitely seen a decline in the fluidity of this society and the recent events, including Akihabara and the suicide rate are clear indications this society is in trouble. The ignorant silence and anonymity in transit is both convenient and concerning. Manners? 70% OK! 30% Worrying!

Mate! They need all the help they can get to keep up with the Aussies in the pool. Let'em wear them. It's gonna make bugger all difference to the results.

we should steadily work on the mental health care of the victims’ families.

Wouldn't it make more sense to steadily work on the mental health care of the general public in order to prevent this kind of sadistic crime and, lord forbid, lower the suicide rate? Though, that's just my opinion.

I could just not stand by and watch or stroll by without a care in the world.

Was that my comment? My comment was, do what you can without putting your own life at risk. And, precautions? Yeah, don't touch a bleeding stranger or you risk giving yourself a death sentence for being 'the good Samaritan'.

If you have nothing to hide there is no problem, is there? It's good to see some vigilance from the J-cops. Now, if we could only get them to start giving out some tickets for speeding, going through red lights and reckless driving I might start to think they actually have a job besides hanging out at the koban and giving directions.

Have you seen how long it often takes for an ambulance to get to the scene of anything?

Have you seen how long it takes to die from HIV or Hep B? Sorry, but I would not put myself in that situation. Help them? Yes! Risk your own life? No way!

rtrhead1 - Fair, are you kidding me? You would sit there and watch a man bleed to death because you are afraid of catching something?

I have got to agree with Fair Dinkum. My father is an ambulance officer and has told me repeatedly - Don't stop at a car accident! Don't try to break up fights! Don't try to help a bleeding person! Of course, you want to, but you are risking your own life in doing so. The only things you should do are, call for assistance, place a blanket over a person and keep the area clear. Ummm.... Why do you think ambulance officers where gloves, masks and goggles? It's got nothing to do with helping a person in need. It's called 'common sense'!

why aren't we talking about banning knives?

Yeah right! Death by sharpened chopstick!

How the hallabit can you even think it is even remotely possible to ban knives? I guess you eat pumpkins like apples. This kind of crap is gonna continue and it is gonna get worse. I remember a line from The Adams Family movie when Wednesday was going to a costume party, but she was stayed in her normal clothing. A woman asked her who she was dressed as and she replied, "I'm dressed as a homicidal maniac cos they look just like everybody else."

But how often do you see a life sentence in Japan?

Well, I've been here nine years so far :o

The death penalty does nothing to deter these events. The only thing it does is, give the families of the victims some satisfaction, which is a false mindset anyway. If someone kills your brother and you kill him how does it make it justice. All of these fiends want to die, so why give them what they want?
