When I was in high school in Oz the rule was, never date the hockey chicks! they are dangerous! I didn't even know Japan had a field hockey team. The Aussie men's team will be out to kick some serious gluteus maximus!

It is alarming how many teachers are married to their students. In the west it's called 'grooming' and it is illegal for internet users to use chat rooms to groom young girls for future relationships. But, it's just normal in Japan for a sleazy adult to groom young girls.

Of course the principal is going to defend the teacher's actions. I have seen the insulting reprimands given by Japanese teachers many times and telling kids they are idiots is part of their main arsenal. They probably did not tell him to die although, they would have said something along the lines of, "you don't deserve to live in this society," It's standard practice in schools. Then there is also the good old smack on the head, which does happen regularly regardless of the laws against physical abuse of students. And, not to forget the shaving of the head of unruly boys. I've seen boys have their head shaved for forgetting to bring their sports gear. It's not that the kids are becoming 'thin-skinned' it is the fact the only way teachers discipline kids is with character assassination, which after a while clearly takes its toll on the kid's emotional state making incidents like this are inevitable. Sad!

I've got to agree with NuckenFutz. Unfortunately, I fear their popularity will be due to their willingness to work unpaid overtime and without sufficient holidays. Possibly also because they will not report on the improper procedures of many hospitals like, reusing blood collection devices . I hope I am wrong!

Holidays??? This is Japan! If you want to take your holidays don't come back! If you don't want to work 'UNPAID' overtime you will be fired and we'll keep your holiday pay. It sort of sounds a bit like socialism or communism, doesn't it? All hale the Tza of Japan!

Nice Romulus3! Pretty ridiculous she resorted to such drastic measures though. It just reflects the pressures most Japanese parents are under and their complete inability to deal with them. I hope the kid is OK and he enjoys his new foster home.

If you ask a Japanese person it is neither East or West. It is the center! It is an island with a unique culture of acceptable suicide, random stabbings, child molestation, spousal abuse, no work ethics and political corruption at the highest levels. A very unique place indeed!

It is a small step towards individuality although, if there are many people wearing the same get-ups it's hardly individual, is it? I think it looks ridiculous! Japan has always had a '20 years after the fact' cult culture. This crap died out in the eighties.

That is cheap. I pay 4,000yen for my AU phone. It reminds me of when the iPhone was first released in the US and Apple reduced the price two months after its release. I wonder if the people who have already bought one can change their plan to the cheaper rate.

Condolences to the family, but it makes one wonder why helmets are not compulsory for ALL open wheeled machines. I saw an old fella have a stack on his electric quad-racer a fortnight ago and he sustained pretty serious head injuries. It' just too easy to die when you are old. It seems odd that there were two other people there, one of which was slightly injured, but neither of them were able to catch the granny. Could they have been negligent? Or was she a 150kg super gran?

By way of analogy: 4 years ago I bought a charm that wards off wild elephant attacks. I have not been attacked since, so it must work.

Wow, I have one of those charms too, but it also protects me from lions and tigers!

Does anyone know where I can get one that will protect me from a loony with a knife or a saw?

This flood protection plan is clearly a mock-up to get more spending and create jobs for thousands of construction workers. Even if the bill does get passed and they decide to go ahead with reinforcing levies and drainage systems it will take at least ten years before anything actually gets done. One would think they were more pressing issues like, finishing highways or bringing schools up to earthquake standard.

Yep, no compassion here! This sick batch took the lives of two innocents for no better reason than self-pity or some trucked-up belief it would be better for the kids. I hope the kids can visit this batch in hell and throw rocks at her! - Japan! A great place to visit, but I wouldn't want to grow up here!

It's not so difficult to live cheaply in Tokyo without being a complete scrooge. You've just got to be sensible. However, it's also just as easy or even easier to go out and blow a hundred bucks on nothing.

I rarely speak on the phone, so cancer from a phone doesn't concern me, but I send many text messages. I'm more likely to develop arthritis in my thumb.

Yeah, I've been in a few public pools and they are very strict about diving. The lifeguards nearly blue me out of the water with their whistles at one pool. Why was she diving at this pool? She's very lucky to remain quadruped.

Diving practice into a pool less than a meter deep. The challenge was diving without actually hitting one's head on the bottom. That's just a disaster waiting to happen and, low and behold, it did! At least she isn't in a wheel chair for the rest of her life. I guess the gods were not in their favor today.
