    samuraiblue;

ok, but I was thinking more on demographics supplying other rationale with respect to the future of these and other islands.

As China's failed one child policy sees a huge drop in population in the next couple of generations due to favouring only sons and Japan's rapidly aging population, the outcome is more likely more mixed pan-Asian marriages, including Japanese. Thus the threat of a uppity China goes down dramatically. In that environment the variables change.

Maybe these islands go to China now while they still can move their weight around, with Japanese interests included later.

it will just depend on when, as interests become more similar and localised.

Dokho to Korea, Kurliis to the Russians, Uotsuri to China, Okinawa independent. Seems to be where the wind is blowing and something's going to give

Glad they denied the military nutters. Given the added note on textbooks Japan is increasingly a deluded country by design. Another country has the right to deny anyone entry. These 3 obstinate LDPers arenot what Korea wants, nor would anyone.

might as well have a news conference, point to an image of the island, and pound the chest. Ridiculous

One last thought. Can Kan call an election, to hold the Diet accountable for the disaster, and ask the public to give him the power to rid the country of nuclear and those who sold them out to the power companies? It would be a compelling issue. Might finally hold LDP accountable for Japan's worst disaster.

Kan reminds me of the lead in the movie Climber's High by Masato Harada , fighting the powers that be in spite of just trying to do something good. Check and double check. Well, the facts are in, and nuclear is for losers. Given the 70% sold off rate of LDP alone to the power companies, not a wit will let that happen.

For Japan to really reduce this dependency it needs Kan to continue. That the media have also been sold out to this agenda isn't really a shock to anyone, is it?

The business interest isn't the public interest. No, Japan needs Kan. As much as the polly's are yelling, Japan needs Kan now more than ever.

Gotta love the fake polling numbers to bolster unsubstantiated claims of disapproval. This is how Japanese are controlled by media to not question media. Far more likely this really means that Kan is very popular outside of these lobby groups or paid off politicians and should stay on.

Keep going Kan, you have them sweating now. With him gone there is no reason to believe that Japan will ever be nuclear free.

Really though, what is this for except to continue business as usual? They are not spending money on solar and wind if they are spending it on methane hydrates. What's the point if half the energy used in Japan goes to Pachinko and Christmas montage's of blue LED's? Rewarding local conservation efforts would reduce major demand. Most of the waste everywhere is from the last 4km. So conservation actually has a multiplier savings effect. Oh, and stop wrapping individual chips/crackers/biscuits in their own plastic... mkay? How much oil is used just for food packaging? And then all the electricity to run the processing?

BTW, the depths of this are similar to the blowout in the Gulf of Mexico. If it's just digging it might work, but any drilling and under the pressure it's under is a whole new level of danger.

All that because no one can turn off the Pachinko lights. It's getting silly.

What next? We launch orbital solar panels?

Japan is surrounded by water. Water below the surface is cooler than the hotter air of summer. So, put tubes under the water, and pump the cooler water in a closed loop. The surface end of the loop would be a heat exchanger to become an air conditioner to cool entire cities. It would then just be a question of what energy source to use to pump the water. However, it saves a lot of electricity from cooling the air compared to other cooling systems.

Toronto Deep Lake Water Cooling, saves about 600MW for air conditioning in the downtown core. It's a freshwater system so there is some addition to the water supply, however the general cooling system principles can be used in a salt water system.

Most of Japan's largest cities are on the waterfront. There are opportunities to increase efficiencies of energy by using a multitude of systems and reduce reliance on nuclear power. But, you have to try first and not just stare at your feet or blame someone else.

Kan is right to try. Now others have to step up and provide the ideas

    another questionable poll.

What was the sample size? How old were the respondents? Or How were the respondents contacted? Land line, keitai or Internet? When did the poll take place?

I get the feeling that this is the Asahi newspaper base and not a wider population sample.

Japanese complain about not being informed, but then accept being snowballed by their "media".

Japan on Thursday recommended 59 more households should evacuate from four areas considered radiation “hot spots” near the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, officials said.

Recommended??? How about evacuated? How about compensated?

Where's the class action lawsuit suing the gov't everyday of your life and your children's life?

actually Nokia makes a lot of its business in the Third World with cheap phones and can't excel in a higher end marketplace. They did have a chance some years ago and went for proprietary systems.

Ironically Apple iphone itself is losing progressively to Android so one king topples another temporarily it seems. Sad though that with so many viable choices, the market went with the phone with the worst human rights associated with it.
