You can be sure that if it is good for you, they are against it in America because they fear the state! They don't seem to realize they elect the people, so the state are themselves. It's a special case of weird.

Japan in the wake of its nuclear disaster needs partners like Germany who are focused on change to spur them along and encourage economic development, competition and partnerships. Ironically Japan is ignoring the renaissance it itself help create.

Anytime solar is not available is a premium, so then you sleep at night and then wake up during the day. Only industrial and commercial operations are in need of CHP and geothermal more so than people. I bet they overshoot 25% and hit 35%

Yay! 25% isn't much if conservation efforts are also doubled while other sources are added.
I have every expectation it will work. Note that if it does, the naysayers will have to eat crow. Even better, they'll have to get out of the way.
Hurry Germany!

@aoto
do you have a feed in tariff where you are? If so, how is that going?
also what size of building is this for, and what size lot does the building occupy? That would provide a useful comparison to the average house in Japan. Some areas would likely be quite similar

@sengoku38
huh? debunk time...
windmills kill no where close the the number of birds compared to office buildings. I guess you're in the process of dismantling all of them? no? Cars kill more birds. Are they banning them? no? Then drop the windmills kill birds. In comparison to everything else it is laughably minor and the technology improves to not do that. Buildings and cars certainly don't, so the disparity only increases. It's been debunked for nearly a decade.
Solar: why would you bulldoze habitat? Stick'em on buildings, bridges, bus stops, even make them into piazzas like in Germany. Face buildings toward the sun in design to begin with. Use natural light indoors even.
Hydroelectric cause earthquakes??? huh?? I'd agree with GoHomeHaters that that would make Canada the earthquake capital of the world. Nope.
Windmills breaking in a typhoon. Ok now, this one is possible. That's possible in that they can be toppled. They shut down after a certain high wind speed, it wouldn't keep generating. But it would be akin to a office building falling over. Not likely with today's engineering. Possible? Sure.
Geothermal isn't enough! Good enough for the planet. Should be good enough for a single country upon it. Geo is ideal for Japan.
Please read recent material on any of these topics. Your fear might be alleviated. Opportunities abound in Japan. I don't know why people are blind to it.

If you are aware of Moore's Law for computers, it also is true for solar panels in terms of its increasing capacity and lower costs. Take any statistic you want, in 18 months it will change. Given that Japan makes a lot of LCD TVs and that solar panels use pretty much the same technology (lots of cells put together) there is no reason why Japan can't ask 50% of production to go to solar panels to get the country off or reduce its dependency on nuclear. That would make a dent.

I once did a napkin comparison of nuclear and geothermal and determined that for a base load system, geothermal is a realistic comparison. Solar can then be used for day to day load, and the two working together or along with other systems would work out quite well.

but that would have to be based on a different style of country. Expecting everything to remain the same and also to change its energy systems isn't reality.
once though that brain-lock and be unlocked, then sure, reductions are possible along with generation. It will not be generation alone that will make a difference.

btw 20% is nothing for Japan. Could easily be twice that.

Psychology of previous investment is on wikipedia and refers to a comment made by a fav writer James Howard Kunstler. People expect a way of life based on their parents lifestyle, not on one they could afford themselves with today's dollars, nor with costs even increasing. The comment referred to the denial to the affordability of driving a car. People will not drive in the future, but will do everything to stop alternatives and at any price break go back to driving, until a market crash I suppose. It refers to a locked-in brain. Incapable of even considering anything else.
Similarly to live in denial people just expect a lifestyle to appear. Nothing will change if it means no one wants to alter how they live or perceive anything or simply want to be green or efficient by doing nothing. I call it the Boomer Disease, but anyone can define it.
I think if Japan really got serious about energy it could do magnificently compared to my Canada, but all I see is fear of being prepared and of trying. With a recent conservative win in Canada nothing will happen on federal gov't level for at least 5 years. 5 years we'll never get back.
So I'd like to be hopeful for Japan, even if that too is unrealistic. At least there is domestic pressure to attain something different. We'll see how long it lasts.
