More needs to be done, not sung about. Stop singing. Do something. People are so easily forgotten and even now still trying to recover. Having friends who are still helping out with volunteer operations because regular Japanese do not help out and then have a concert about it is misplaced. Try volunteering, not advancing your career on the backs of phantom relief efforts.

BTW this is not a problem limited to Japan. Maybe in that the prediction is for a more upcoming event but in general the problem is fairly common. In Canada for example, the city of Vancouver is very beautiful and is also on an earthquake fault which created Vancouver Island. The city is on sandstone, so that in the event of a large earthquake many parts of the city would essentially sink as the sand would liquify. Also in the US, my favourite city is San Francisco, again an earthquake historic area.

We all seem to be attracted to the physical features and advantages that these areas provide while brushing off their price to be paid for living there.

Doesn't really matter when. Japan is an earthquake prone country. The best way to handle that is the scale down the likes of Tokyo and Osaka and distribute the population as evenly as possible rather than major clumps and mega-cities. Given the wonderful trains connections wouldn't be a problem and perhaps this would reduce the costs and any unfortunate deaths regardless of where and when such an event occurs again.

Reduce population in known areas would be ideal. But concentrating so many people in a known earthquake prone area (more so than other areas) is really whistling in the dark.

Unless Fuji-san blows its top again I can't imagine any Japanese taking action. If they refuse to even move out of or their children out of a radiation zone this pronouncement really means nothing

The whole area should be evacuated. Americans during Three Mile Island moved out. That any Japanese stay at all in this day and age is stunning testament to the understanding .

The requirement to move was undeniable and the refusal to understand from the husband unconscionable. But perhaps this is due to a major lack of education regarding science.

I redid high-school chemistry recently and learned about the uses of radiation and the different types. When it comes to kids though, they are still growing and cells affected by anything could lead to health issues later on. Why would anyone take a chance like that? Sure, depending on the radiation it could be okay, but even I would want to move. Do I want to be checking every little thing?

The husband needs to believe in himself that he can get another job. His life is not his job. He had a choice between his family and his job and he chose his job.

“Japanese businessmen try to smooth over issues slowly. They seem to believe it is the way not to hurt anyone’s interests. But they don’t necessarily think about the interests of shareholders.”

By milking the company dry for the last 22 years, that we know of! Another reason no investor outside of Japan should even bother.

hey great news. But what were the inputs needed to grow the seaweed? And how does that compare to sugarcane which is hand-harvested?

If it can produce enough of its own energy needs to harvest, AND have enough left over for sale then that's good. Corn doesn't and sugarcane does but only because of manual labour with a machete.

If the machines underwater to harvest use more energy than the seaweed can produce then its not a winner. However these results are encouraging.

No matter where Newt goes, there he is. He'll never win the national election so all the GOP had to do was elect the least raving nutter of them all. They can't even do that.

if it's not an asset sale then Japanese will effectively be paying for TEPCO's mistakes through their own taxes. What an incredible insult. Media will tell Japanese what a great deal this is??? Another insult.

TEPCO and the old boys network has to come down.

It's like reading about 19th century train barons getting the Government on their side . This time it's working since America isn't protesting at all

I don't get the reasoning for the US Government to callow to corporate demands over and over. So no one goes to jail for destroying your financial system, but they're going to aim the police at downloaders because of the utter failure of the music and movie industries??? They let the digital sales ruin their own businesses. If they want it all back they'd have to go back to analog.

Now the government is cracking down and the people for freedom are fighting back. America being run by corporations will probably end up like China as well. Instead of communism though it is now The United Corporations of America.

OWS was a start. This looks like to be a more technical version of it.

Please wake up America, we want you back to championing freedom.

It's like comparing 50Hz to 60Hz electrical systems. If a machine is designed to work with electricity a certain way then that's that. Why make everything a factor in discrimination? Surely the blood differences and so many other systems are things the Japanese culture could finally let go of. If this doesn't stop what hope does the end of racism in Japan ever have?

I had read that the Japanese themselves had reduced its use and it was a recent publication in the last 35 years or so(?) that reignited this blood racism.

Japan doesn't look as bad on external debt as noted in wikipedia here http://tinyurl.com/36xwgy and there's also interesting info by comparing that with public debt countries http://tinyurl.com/s67xf

Note USA, Ireland and UK on external debt are toast but Japan not too bad in stark contrast to the 200 percent of public debt of Japan. If you owe it to yourself there's more leeway so perhaps that's why the bond markets haven't reacted as much

Note the Japanese employment rate has never made sense. So the country is effectively fully employed (<5 percent) but has a stagnant economy? Huh? Does that mean the economy is useless?

More likely that students who don't get entry jobs and have to drift, or women or migrant workers the two Japan's don't jive with the numbers as different terms are used.
