This article is a very light treatment of Harper. Harper was found in contempt of Parliament, (first in the history of Canada) a ruling that lead to the pronouncement of a non confidence vote.

Harper had a $56 billion surplus in 2006 to work with, and proceeded to throw it all away in corporate tax cuts and more corporate giveaways. It's gone. The banking sector was saved not because Harper did anything but because he couldn't privatize it like America in time. He was stopped by circumstance of a global recession, then took credit for it.

Freedom of information is a thing of the past, constant redaction of texts, even texts not secrets of the state being the norm under Harper, and just another factor.

The only poll that matters is the one on election day. The polls have been made fun of here because so many different companies have so many different results. Hopefully the polls will be banned during the election, so that we actually have a real one. Not one by fiat or the corporate interests who want even more tax cuts.

It was interesting that the American lingo used up here to try to thwart dialog and science didn't work out too well. The word 'elite' was used negatively over and over but laughed off. Even a national newspaper tried to sway the public to think down on people but that didn't work either.

People like elites because that usually means you have an education (engineer, doctor, lawyer etc) and are actually qualified to do something. (In high contrast to the idiots elected into office). This irony was lost on the attackers every time this was mentioned, and continues to be so.

Many other attempts were also non-transferable. But I think sadly the attack ads are here to stay. Watching the "media" here capitulate to the conservative gov't was quite disturbing and shows no sign of letting up. While a Faux News North has been avoided thanks to a recent ruling, the pressure is still there and the fewer-taxes-spend-more-stupid-people-who-have-money agenda hasn't gone away.

I doubt these people are more numerous than before, only their voices have not been stymied by reason and logic as per normal. It will be interesting if the "media" sell out the election as well given their recent mergers and acquisitions by the same like-minded interests.

I think it's the generational change to those entitled to their entitlements versus those who also sold us down the river but at least tried to ensure the public trust.

Harper actually said that the Japanese earthquake is de-stabilizing to the economy so Canadians shouldn't go to the polls. (!!???) The man is a buffoon. But only as bad as the finance minister, who should probably be in jail at this point for being a repeat debt offender (sold out Ontario too when he was FM before his national disgraces)

What's worse however are the American-style attack ads and online trolls bestowing Harper like the good brown shirts they are.

It's been a trying four years. If we can get rid of the science and math failures and the hate mongers, we might have a chance.

even the US military has scaled down its purchase of the F-35 due to cost overruns and substandard capabilities. This was not an open tender. Had it been other options were available that could perform in Arctic with twin engines and mid air refueling.

Harper blew away all our savings and is continually rewarded by the "media" for being a great economic advisor. It's ridiculous.

this isn't a textbook CIA regime change, but enters new territory in respecting the local conditions, come what may. Thus putting to bed all those American plans to re-shape the world. This is a smart play. Odd that Americans themselves don't seem to recognize it. democracy isn't about American democracy, its about local people. Give them a chance.

Take the toys away and Gadhafi is nothing, not even to his people. Letting the Libyans take the end game matters into their own hands ensures this is not a Western crusade, and maybe (finally?) indicates a lesson learned from forcing regime change in Iraq.

the result will be fewer jihadists since they will be more interested in their own country and not Western ones.

re-read. Negotiation in good faith means the contract is legally binding. By breaking up collective bargaining that's saying contracts can be broken on a whim. Anyone can just break the contract. The action is different than the price. Reduce the costs fine, but Collective Bargaining provides stability from rotating strikes in different places. Try Google

Or, y'know, miss the point again?

denouncing their collective bargaining rights has nothing to do with paying off debts. Sure, battle for concessions in a rough economy, that's fine and reasonable, but taking people's rights away are not.

Australian floods represent 40% of the coal coke needed to run many power stations, so I wonder how that will affect worldwide as well. China is their largest buyer too, so look to more interest in energy in the Middle East from China, not less, as you implied.

Also the Middle East isn't as far away from China. They're holding a lot of cards.

Best thing to invest in resilience; geothermal and solar thermal along with local electrical generation in whatever form. It has to happen sometime. Might as well be now with the writing on the wall, not a few years from now when it really is too late to do anything about it.

no, since China is the reason oil is so high in price. The American economy has been in comparison stagnant so its not America that's driving the energy prices. China can afford it, America can't.

Look to China to continue to out bid others for the energy resources. The market is the winner.

This affects everyone of course, so the best places will be where there is public transit powered by local electricity generation, as that is not imported, thus locally priced. (depending on how the electricity is generated though)

you don't remove anyone from the SC. That's the point of having it, that's its design. It forces no one to get their own way except through dealing and compromise. A difficult concept for America, I know.

When Saudi Arabia goes, that'll be the end of America's cheap oil. America depends on tyranny for a cheap fillup. Ironic indeed that the people rise up for freedom take away America's ability to drive. If only people were interested in less tyranny and fewer dictatorships from the start. And also Florida cancelled the trains. Timing will be impeccable.
