you have to be aware of what your trying to say to begin with. I don't think there's a book for that. Oddly his English is fine, so it's not linguistics, just the skill of public speaking.

@Richard the First If people really were given half a chance to get interested in the sport they wouldn't switch channels. That's the media telling you what to do, not fans of sport. But if they did that they would learn Ishikawa's real skill level. Even so, it would show what he is up against and how he deals with pressure in the sport. Denying the rest of the broadcast denies understanding and development of a true fan base.

ugh.. i hate that there is no law mandating that the margin of error be published. Otherwise the title for the lowest score in history will always be in dispute.

when i was watching a US baseball game in Osaka, the game was going great and fun to watch. Then the Japanese pitcher changed in the 8th, and that was it for the broadcast!? Media have no regard for the game playing itself out in their coverage. If the Japanese player leaves, there's no reason to continue.

So here, if the media want to be invited more willingly as in PGA, then they will have to (try to) be more polite and leave their fixation on a single viewpoint behind and report the entire game, not just their man. He isn't alone out there.

Being Canadian, although we play a lot of winter and summer sports, we're not often at the top, and certainly not in every sport. So during events like the Olympics the broadcasters try to show a wide variety of events, some even with no Canadians at all. When I don't see the same attitude to appreciate others playing a sport of interest, it comes off as rude and self-centered. I sometimes wonder if the point of the event wasn't totally lost.

economy is indeed rough if the gov't is running out of morons for posts. Wasn't there a case of museum abuse by Japanese before? what's with that?

note that the question of Arctic Sovereignty in the Northwest Passage (NWP) was not resolved and this will come up when or if the Obama love-in ever dies down.

USA already budgeted 100 billion into green tech, it'll be funny to watch the tar sands close! Canadians don't use it, it just goes to the West and USA. So I'm quite hopeful that the NWP won't even become an issue if the drill drill drill crowd is replaced.

oh, on the environment, Harper did a total flip-flop since he was previously in favour of the Bush model of climate change (whatever that was), and now he's in favour of an Obama climate dialogue (code for: Harper Gov't needs a way out of its "plans").

Expect real action when Obama gets going on wind and solar projects. The more pressure he can bear against Alberta's tarsands the better we'll all be.

This is a big change. Thanks Obama.

Having a parliament, we voted to leave by 2011. We lost 108 soldiers and the mission is not in our peacekeeping role as per our historical nobel-prize normal. We are to never do this again, and once these troops are back I believe I'll see a return of my country's pride in peacekeeping, not this Bush peacemaking debacle. We'll continue in Afghanistan training police and engineering projects. This was our pennance for saying no to Iraq, if we wished to survive a Bush presidency.

The whole thing on Canada's border is a real joke though, any moose can cross it. The issue is, why bother? Obviously its so cold up here that the very fear itself is keeping people back. If we just underline the fear of cold we'll improve the border.

The real issue is the Detroit/Windsor peace bridge lineups holding back billions of dollars in trade bottlenecked into single file. One possible solution here is the combined use of 1) computers with 2) railways, and load up trains instead more dynamically. Or the use of ships across the lake since ships can hold more freight.

Sticking thousands of trucks across the bridge everyday is just nuts

um they don't have dreams because that would take creative thought? what rubbish! of course Japanese have dreams. I don't get what he wants to say at all. is he saying that their dreams don't matter so replace them with the Olympics? Only a politician can make something as positive as the Olympics into a life that doesn't matter.

Make the job redundant and replace the PM with a subcommittee of ruling party members on a rotating leadership. Oh sorry, they did that already?

This would be no better than SARS. In Toronto we had an outbreak in 2003 and 44 people died. There was a friend of mine working for Toshiba, but he was asked not to come to Japan, but Japanese in Toronto were allowed to show up for a trade show in Tokyo!

Unless the concept of double standards are raised, and that diseases don't care about them, any plans will surely work exactly as they have been designed. And will fail.

The Common Framework on Languages from Europe splits up the levels into 6 areas. Basic: A1/A2, Independent: B1/B2, and Proficient: C1/C2. Each level has specific demands and results. If students and teachers knew what results were expected then there would be also a sense of how to manage that expectation with further training of capable teachers AT EACH LEVEL. Also report cards to the Ministry would be more obvious. There is no reason why Japan should not adopt this.

What is the expectation of Japanese/Foreign teachers in Japan in teaching English? Is finding luggage the only point? Because it's not culture, not literature, and not history.

Teachers engage and can make all the difference.
