Just to followup, you should know that transgenic cross pollunation in USA/Mexico is destroying honored corn crops and making everything GMO, which Monsanto just bills you for. What was once free will now be paid to a multinational company, devastating farmers and countries. Once the cross pollunation has occurred you can't get GMO out of your crops or seeds. We will have no choice in the matter. Japan should label any food with GMO ingredients. The real problem is overpopulation not crops.

GMO foods will come back to haunt us and in no way go through a scientific analysis of their medical effects. I love Japanese food because (in spite of the salt) it's still actual food. Support your local food growers. Try and see "The World According to Monsanto" if you can. Maybe even start a garden even if it's a few pots on a balcony.

Ask for labels of GMO food. If it's not labelled or you don't know where it comes from, try something else.

don't know about that. Americans accidentally shoot themselves and run themselves over. America has been dumbed down for so long I hope I'm wrong but their inspired ignorance is not exactly a stellar indicator. I wonder how long the author has lived in Japan?

it's more interesting to note that most of the fish Japanese eat come from far reaches of the world and the Mediterranean and not Japan. This is a food source in massive decline. So yeah, Japan better support local food, because it's not going to be fish. Where do you think the tuna came from?

love japanese food, wish I ate more of it. It was always filling and not heavy. I also hope they continue their stand against GMO?

I'd just invest in land and food. can't live without those. bearing that, also an education. Not in hobbies, but in improving oneself. You then always have it with you and it does not depreciate. I can't invest in land or food, so I'm going back to school :P

    whoops, sp criminal above...

anyway, any real athelete retired looks maybe not as fit but never ever as wasted away as the former Takanohana. JSA will be and should be sued for providing a steriod haven. Forget the Russians for a minute. Why are Japanese doing this to themselves?

the majority of the population don't know anything about drugs apart from the puerile information they get from their media.

Yeah, it goes in line with deficiencies in biology and the amazing longer bowel systems of Japanese (hilarious). Hearing that the JSA basically is shortening the lifespans of their top wrestlers (Takanohana) is crimial. The steriod use will finish a lot of them off.

If they were int'l, sick rikshi could sue JSA (based on local laws not Japan's) that JSA did not do their best to prevent illness to them also, which is why they will never be an int'l professional organization.

if they were playing sumo while high on mary jane, they should get a medal not expulsion. Seriously though, how long can Japan suspend my brain thinking that only 3 sumo wrestlers, all Russian, are "it" and we can all get back to full throttle steroid sumo? This is nuts. This also points to a lack of understanding on youth and shows that having no policy and just off the cuff decisions make the JSA exceedingly amateurish. I've been a fan of sumo for years but this is it for me. JSA has to clean up it's act or watch itself implode. The international interest in sumo? It's gone for me.

roomtemp: to hire an asian into probably a mostly white police force ensures the public trust is upheld in the face of crime against the asian community. The police force should reflect the public after all. Thus the changing face of NZ is reflected in it's laws but also those who enforce them.

for japan then, for violence against non-japanese would they consider residents who are also non-japanese? Or are residents to be forever considered non-members of the community? BTW, are there any non-asian police in Japan? With the Diet interested in getting new immigrants to Japan, a lack of diversity does not allow people to feel comfortable coming forward given the news.

the last sentence should read "is no longer" not "is longer" Also verisimilitude is hardly in common usage anywhere. Must have been a direct electronic translation and this word was spit out. Aren't news articles meant to explain ideas instead of confuse?

Seriously, I'm afraid awl is going to be our mainstay energy source for the next few decades. There simply aren't any serious alternative energy sources that can compete with awl, even at awl's record high prices.

This isn't going to work. Unfortunately oil is most certainly not going to be available in the next 5 years let alone the next few decades. Not that there won't be oil mind you, just that the demand for it increasingly overcomes supply. Divide what's left with an increasing population means less to use, no matter what the price. Then do that again as oil drops by another 3% a year, every year. This is called 'demand destruction' or recession, take your pick.

Our economic system is predicated on continuous growth, which is slightly insane. We seems to have failed to understand the ramifications of subtraction as a global society. I was no different. However after I saw "End of Suburbia" and found the above links, and read a lot!, this helped my understanding. For some people this is very depressing, but that passes.

Now that we are expecting continuous albeit slow decline, now is the time to adapt. If we wait until we really are in a crisis, then we have failed ourselves.

We'll be fine, we can adjust after all, but don't expect to be driving in 5 or 7 years. Get out of your condo/apartment, get land if you can, learn to garden and ride/fix a bike, would be simple examples anyone can do. As energy availability continues to drop by 15%, (3% * 5years) then you have to use 15% less energy. It's pretty simple. Better to start now, while you have choices, and not when you have to suddenly make a 15% subtraction.

Lifestyle changes are important ways to reduce your burden as well as a means of personal protection. Asking to look into ways of being self reliant are good exercises. ie: try to find a bike repair course in your city. Do you even have one?

My city of Toronto lost to Beijing because the previous IOC prez Samarach (sp?) wanted a legacy. Beijing continues to go back on it's committments made in 2001, and by the time the Olympics roll around, the planning stages will be too late as this report suggests.

Athletes are the key. If only a few protest during the games, which is likely, China will go mental.

The issue in giving China the Olympics was to make China more open. I'm afraid the opposite is clearly visible. I don't expect this to be any better than Berlin in the 1930's when the Nazi's were trying to show the world how great they were, only to be outdone by a black athlete USA's Owens.

It's all about the athletes, not the city or the politics so much. History has shown that it's the athletes who win, not a political agenda.

    It's called Peak Oil.
Here's a primer on Peak Oil from http://www.energybulletin.net/primer.php . I would also recommend the documentary called "End of Suburbia" which is probably on bittorrent by now, to help you put this into context. I wonder if they ever translated that one into Japanese?

With more than 90% of the energy in Japan imported, this is a serious issue being weirdly ignored by media. The above sources will help any reader here get a grip on the issues. Since supply has been in plateau since 2005 or so, as demand exceeds supply, so prices increase.

Some may be thinking it's just speculation; that with a depreciating US Dollar, the oil is worth more in the ground everyday than selling. Although this is true, the fact of the matter is that under Peak Oil, there is no more slack in the system. The world can no longer increase and exceed current production levels. We've been at 85 mil/barrels per day for over 3 years now. Our allowance is not increasing. What happens when it starts decreasing? The world is not prepared.

Also checkout http://www.theoildrum.com for more detailed analysis and timely cogent discussions. (June 8th topic "Why oil costs over $130 per barrel: the decline of North Sea Oil" here: http://europe.theoildrum.com/node/4112 )

Don't take my word for it. Take the IEA excel spreadsheet information and make nice graphs. The data updates every 3-5 months.

For 150 years, we went up. You can follow the progress of the world with the production of oil. All our technology and society, even our delusion of entitlement due to previous investment is all due to this amazing period in humanity. However, now we are in plateau, and these delusions of continuing in the same business-as-usual manner of continuous endless growth are in question. Some day soon we'll be heading down the curve, and reality will finally hit us as we go back to living like the 1940's or earlier in terms of energy usage.

It will be more local. More interesting, more neighbourly. Not bad, just different than today.

As it happens, I believe that of all nations, Japan has the possibility to ride out the wave of energy recession better than others. More electricity, more solar panels, more gardening, more local living.

    Make your time
