Maybe there was a miscommuication between the old Japanese man and the flight attendant and the attendant was very rude. She should've disfuse the situation by walking away and having another flight attendant intervene. If Delta flies frequently to Japan, they should lhave at least one Japanese speaking attendant or assistant to avoid esclation of misunderstandings. Sounds like flight attendant didn't handle the situation well. This could've been avoided.

telly2Jan. 10, 2012 - 11:27PM JST As to the issue at hand...this is going to turn out really badly for the Japanese. Australian sentiment was against the protesters initially but after your vessels came into OUR waters the tide of opinion changed quickly. Our government might be weak-kneed but our population does not take kindly to being pushed around by bullies or have your forgotten the lessons of WW2?
These protesters must've been a three blind mice. The ship they boarded was NOTt a whaling ship. It was a surveillance vessel sent to monitor the Sea Shepherd's activities by the Japanese Government. This happened in the Australian Economic (not territorial) Zone, where our laws are not enforceable - Australia simply claim exploitation rights to natural resources. The ship was passing through on its way to Antarctic waters, where the "Australian zone" is only recognised by a small handful of countries (not even the US recognise Australian 'ownership' there). How these muppets' actions are supposed to have prevented whaling I'll never know. I am not a supporter of the Japanese using the cover of science to whale commercially but neither am I a supporter of stupid people doing illegal, idiotic things and tax money being used to bail them out. So the pickup of these activists is supposedly costing Australian taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Japan government has done nothing. It feels like goverment has abandon these peope and they just doesn't care about people. All that's left are endless bankruptcies, chronic unemployment, high suicide rates and a lot of despair. Many people believe the government lacks the political will to tackle the socially sensitive issue, a situation that has allowed suicide rates to soar. The long economic downturn, changing socio-economic trends and various cultural factors combine to transform society, creating a less stable and more suicide-prone environment.
The recent sharp increase in the number of child deaths is one of the most troubling developments. It seems that almost every week there are several tragic cases involving schoolchildren either taking their own lives or being murdered by a mother or father before the despairing parent commits suicide. The number of family murder-suicides is not detailed in the figures, but news and other reports indicate their frequency is growing. Young people who commit suicide are greatly influenced by adults who take their own lives and the publicity surrounding the deaths. The stress and competition in school for jobs that may no longer exist have also been documented. Sadly, youth suicide appears to have become such a common phenomenon that it no longer grabs press attention and reports are usually consigned to the back pages of newspapers. The whole country is in a state of denial. This is perhaps why we cannot solve this problem. We are trying to ignore it, but wishing it away gets us nowhere.

The main driver of joblessness remains the difficulty of finding work. A year into recovery, there are still many workers for every new job opening. Such intense competition reduces the odds that a given worker will be hired and increases the length of time he will expect to be out of a job. Nonetheless a reminder that something is deeply amiss in Japan labor markets. Given the slow present pace of recovery, Japan risks the creation of a class of the structurally unemployed.
Japan’s present labor market policies cannot deal with this. A simple system of unemployment benefits served the country fairly well in the past. But the system has been overwhelmed by current unemployment, and is ill-equipped for the job of putting the long-term unemployed back to work. Japan will need to adjust its strategy.

Rangers should be cautious of history of arm problem that Darvish had in 2006 and 2009. Sure Darvish has a good stuff, but will he have a serious arm problem way before his contract is up? I hope he's not another Barry Zito.

Seattle is actually getting a potential 10-12 game winner. Since signing of Iwakuma is a short term, it's a low risk for Mariners. He has good stuff and might have a good future. If he does well, Mariners could sign him to a longer contract.

SSCSforeverJan. 10, 2012 - 11:04AM JST Australia has filed a lawsuit against the Japanese whaling program through the International Court of Justice. That sounds like a little more than a complaint to me.
Doesn't make a bit of difference. Big deal with International court. Australia's territorial claims to the Australian Antarctic Territory are not recognized by the rest of the world. Australia loses again.

The problem with Australia's anti-whaling position, and it is a big problem, is that the legal basis on which it stands is not recognized by international law. Even if Australia is successful in cour against Japanese whaling, the Japanese can blithely ignore the court order declaring this action illegal because Australia's territorial claims to the Australian Antarctic Territory are not recognized by the rest of the world. Japan can rightly claim that its whaling fleet is operating in international waters, within terms laid down by the International Whaling Commission, and has sought to avoid confrontations with anti-whaling protest ships. Can the Australian Government be seen to condone the action of these members of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society who boarded a Japanese whaler? The sooner the Australian Government has a presence in these waters the better.

Sea Shepherd terrorist group gets away without even a slap on the wrist. These eco-terrorists should be treated like the terrorists they are. Their home registration country, Netherlands? have warned them repeatedly about throwing or launching anything or they would revoke their license to fly under their flag. But that nation doesn't have a backbone and still hasn't enforced this threat. Regardless of one's beliefs regarding whales (I'm not real comfortable with the whale hunting), the Japanese fleet is operating within International law. In that regard, the Sea Shepherd organization is clearly violating international laws against terrorism.

SSCSforeverJan. 09, 2012 - 08:53PM JST. Yes, a normal, logical person would think that. Unfortunately, Japan doesn't want to have to comply with what other countries and NGOs have to say because they think it would make them look bad in the eyes of the rest of the world. But here's the thing that they haven't figured out yet. More people would praise Japan for stopping the horrific murder of one of the most intelligent beings on the planet than would condemn the decision.
Who said Japan is not complying with the international rules? They are. This is why Australia cannot do nothing but complain. These Sea Shepards are nothing but bunch of pirates. SSCS actions include deliberate rammings, hurling of projectiles at Japanese vessels, including items containing butyric acid, a foul smelling and slippery substance, the hurling of glass items onto Japanese decks with attendant broken glass hazard, the use of illegal laser beams at Japanese crew, which could impair eyesight either temporarily or permanently. These laser beam usages are illegal in the U.S. when directed at aircraft. Generally, piracy is any illegal act of violence or depredation committed outside territorial waters for private (rather than political) ends by crew or passengers of a private ship against another ship or crew. Inside territorial waters such crimes constitute armed robbery at sea and are the responsibility of the state. These definitions emerged from customary international law, the 1958 Convention on the High Seas, and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which has become the de facto constitution for the world's oceans.
The UNCLOS, the UN Charter, and more broadly, customary international law, provide authority that may be invoked for seizing a pirate ship, boarding a ship on the high seas, conducting hot pursuit, and taking action in furtherance of the inherent right of individual and collective self-defense. On the high seas or in any other place outside the jurisdiction of a state, any nation may seize a pirated ship, arrest the pirates, and seize the property on board and submit the matter to its civil and criminal courts. Only warships and military aircraft or vessels in government service, however, may exercise this authority.

As a result, the lives of many poor single women people are disrupted through constant moving. Being poor erodes the spirit just as malnutrition erodes the body. It lowers self-esteem, so it becomes even more difficult to get out of poverty. When individuals are blamed for being poor, it takes attention away from the state of the economy and unemployment, the cycle of poverty and abuse for which helping services are currently insufficient. The blame is often internalized, sometimes turning into self-abuse, increasing self-destructive coping mechanisms like smoking, over-consumption of alcohol and substance abuse. All of these issues affect both women and men. Also, most low-income unmarried or divorced women are also responsible for children, and it hurts them deeply not to be able to provide a safe, quiet, stable home, nutritious food and at least a small fraction of what their kids' classmates take for granted. They may think they are bad mothers for conditions that aren't their fault. Low-income women are also sometimes deemed to be "selfish" for wanting to have kids.

Patrick HattmanDec. 23, 2011 - 01:30AM JST. As it is, Japan and China are already locked in a mini-Cold War of their own concerning control of vast areas of ocean and what lies beneath the sea floor. It will certainly make for some interesting times for decades to come.
Japan really can't do much if U.S. has no presence. At the present, China’s economic interest in Africa are working very well as a result of instability in the region. Destabilisation as a tool of control has always worked for colonial powers. Engineered chaos can then be managed by a strong military presence in the region. In effect, what we are witnessing here is the dawn of a New Cold War between the US-EURO powers and China. This new cold war will feature many of the same elements of the long and protracted US-USSR face-off we saw in the second half of the 20th century. It will take place off shore, in places like Africa, South America, Central Asia and through old flashpoints like Korea and the Middle East. This will be America's new military playground. What makes this new cold war much deeper and more subtle than the previous one, is that it will not be cloaked in a popular ideology like ‘Capitalism vs Communism’. This new war centers around one single issue which is natural resources.

OssanAmericaDec. 24, 2011 - 05:30AM JST. You STILL don't undrstand that "Coast Guard" doesn't mean they can't leave the coast? Are you in the 5th grade or what? Not to mention that research whaling isn't being conducted in ANYBODY's WATERS, it;s being done in international waters so what is the point of your comparison?
What research at the supermarket? Japan should not be trying to impose it’s will on other cultures, namely those around the Southern Saunctary who completely oppose this pillaging of their surrounding oceans. All the arguements about killing intelligent creatures is immaterial, they should hunt in their own waters, and if the problem is there are no whales around Japan, then there’s no traditional hunting grounds left..they’ve killed them all, and demonstrates they problem they are causing. It doesn’t mean they get to kill and eat everyone elses whales.

FarmboyDec. 22, 2011 - 08:04AM JST. South Koreans ARE still technically at war with the North Koreans, but even so, many in the South would like to reunite with the North. Many of them have family in the North. But none of that is my point, really. I think there is a way of acting that is responsible and polite,
IWell, same can be said about Japan and Russia. Technically, Japan and Russia is still at war. If you ask the 17,000 people that were evicted from Kuril Island after the WWII, do you think these people will act in responsible and polite manner to Russia?

In Japan, especially in the major cities, some roads are too small and congested for bicycles and automobile to co-exist safely. Maybe the local goverment should outlaw bicycle riding in certain areas that are considered unsafe and they should put up a big sign that saids 'WALKING ONLY, NO RIDING BICYCLES IN THIS STREET". The police to give out tickets to people that violate the rules.

The situation where a goods once produced in Japan is now imported from China. Increase in imports from other countries, such as China can destroy jobs in the parts of the Japan economy that produce the same products. But due to off-setting job created in other parts of the economy, the inflow of imports is unlikely to cause a net loss of jobs economy-wide. The Japan economy at this time is operating at the low unemployment. That job loss in Japan due to foreign trade may be relatively minor occurrence, even though certain industries may be hit hard.

Patrick HattmanDec. 21, 2011 - 01:31AM JST. Nolan Ryan did not pitch 200 innings til his age 25 season. Darvish has built up his IP over the years to a point that he should be fine in the majors going every 5 days and making 30-32 starts a year. In fact, I expect Darvish to throw a good number of CGs each year, and not just because he will be pitching for Texas.
Compare to Darvish, what held Nolan Ryan back was his wildness, and used to walk alot of batters in his youth. Same with Sandy Koufax, the greatest lefthand pitcher, like Nolan Ryan never pitched over 200 innings until age 25. I don't expect Darvish to throw good number of CGs. The Rangers will carefully restict his pitch count to 100-110 per game and probably end up going 6-7 innings per game. C.J. Wilson made 34 starts in 2011 and completed ony 3 games. Seasons in MLB is 25 percent longer than Japan Baseball.

Rangers lost pair of aces in the last two years. Despite a serious effort, the Rangers were unable to re-sign ace pitcher Cliff Lee following the 2010 season. They made it back to the World Series anyway and were within one strike of winning it all before the St. Louis Cardinals rallied to take the trophy. Then the Rangers lost their latest ace, C.J. Wilson, with the AL West rival Los Angeles Angels this month. Nolan Ryan knows pitching and likes Darvish's makeup and Rangers have plenty of money to spend. In late 2010, the Rangers' final offer to Lee was for six-years, $138 million ($23 million a year) with a vesting option for the seventh year. The Phillies got him for five and $120M. The Rangers need Darvish to compete with the Angels. Hopefully, Darvish is not another Barry Zito with toxic long term contract.

Maybe ANA should have no tolerance policy. Fire these pilots if they are caught.

This is a frequent problem for the pilots. Pilots are also human beings and they make mistakes. Like all of us, some don't use good judgements. Pilots are constantly on microscope to perform well and are judged like robots. Sure they get paid alot of money, but the high stress level is there and alcohol is needed for some pilots to calm their nerves. Maybe they are flying too many hours without breaks. The airlines should study the stress level and give them proper interval breaks. The airlines only think of profits first and rarely thinks of welfare of their workers.
