    Japan Wins!!!!

Today, in his National Foundation Day speech, Premier Wen actually had to explicitly say that China is not a threat to anyone. I guess he finally understood what the Japanese have always understood: how the world perceives the situation. China has been condemned universally. China may be right about the islands or the company employees in restricted military area, but that does not matter. China's reaction is what the world focussed on: it was from the 19th century, not the 21st century. China made itself look scary

mayabru's statement can be made more severe: the whole purpose of Japanese modernization was to prevent from being taken over by European imperialists. They chose Britian as a model. You remember: "the sun never sets on the British Empire". In this respect, the Japanese have been very successful. Even today, foreigners always complain about how difficult it is to walk off with Japan's wealth, but that, after all, is the whole point. "Globalization" is just another word for "neo-imperialism". China: be careful of "globalization", or you may end up like you were in the 18th and 19th centuries.

@Apsara, I presume that "without warning me" is because whoever this is does not read Japanese, and let all the notices with the big red letters accumulate on the coffee table.

My only beef with the system is the payment cap, which I think is 500,000 yen, no matter how many gazillions of yen you make. I think it should be a pregressive system no matter how much you make. That would help balance the health insurance deficit. I do like it that they reimburse all payments you make that exceed a cap depending on your income.

In the end, I'm glad to hear that ordinary Chinese are just going about their lives. A friend says visit the north Beijing branch of the Japanese department store Ito Yokado, called 南直門店 (I don't know the pronunciation), and you'll see it is full of consumers.

Yes, no experience, etc., but promoted to general.

This is "affirmative action" North Korea style, i.e., it applies to the descendants of Kim.

A story from a friend in China. She guesses that the reason for the delays due to custom inspections is that Chinese are not boycotting Japanese goods, and this is the only way to reduce their sales to hurt Japan. Her problem is that it is also hurting her Chinese company, which needs Japanese goods. I'm getting the impression that this issue is not of any interest to ordinary Chinese. So don't form your impression of ordinary Chinese by what you see here.

The Chinese suffer from the dillusion that they can brake the Japanese economy. That is rediculous. The value of the yen has appreciated against the dollar by 350% since 1980, and this did not ruin the economy (last year the US had the largest trade deficit with Japan in history). Japan can go elsewhere, and in a globalized economy, there are lots of places to go.

I wonder if the guy really exists. The only picture of him was taken when he was a teenager. I'd like to see evidence that he exists. I know that the eldest son was disqualified because he tried to get into Japan on a fake passport to take his kids to Disneyland. The middle sone is to "feminine" or "un-manly". Is that North Korean for "gay"? Well, he is pretty cute.

The title of this article is incorrect. China has not engaged in any "diplomacy", just chest pounding.

Well, China is the creation of the US, so the US should put up or shut up.

Someone above said "pride then the fall". Many of the Chinese posters remind me of some of the Japanese during the 80s. And look what happened.... If these Chinese actually believe what they are saying, we better get ready for the China implosion.

What I would like to know is why China is willing to sacrifice its image in the world for a few rocks, even if they have a little oil. Even if what the Japanese did was stupid, what China is doing is more stupid. China has suddenly become scary! To everyone. What happened to the great China of the Olympics? It is a 180 degree turn. China's action is so extreme that nobody even remembers what Japan did. Oh yes, now all Japanese goods imported to and exported from China are being inspected in Chinese ports, causing big delays in delivery. Scary. Very scary.

I wonder if most Chinese really care about the issue.

I talked to my friend in Beijing, and she said Chinese friends told her that it still takes more than 6 hours to get into the Japanese pavilion at the Shanghai Expo. That is down from 8 hours.

This story is not being reported by Chinese news (cable broadcast of CCTV this morning and People's Daily).

Sounds like a set-up. Can Japanese, or anyone for that matter, so easily walk into a "military zone"? Wouldn't there be lots of military around to see that this does not happen? It must have been a sensitive area if they arrest people for entering. Stinks. But probably there will be an exchange for the fisherman.

This is the kind of crime you get when citizens are not allowed to carry handguns so they can shoot and kill each other, a crime worthy of a developed country (read about the US).

What? 50 Chinese out of 1.5 billion have a demonstration, and that is news? Anyway, a Japanese friend living in Beijing says most Chinese find rabidly anti-Japanese Chinese scarry.

Kan offered Shwa 40 billion dollars to finance building a Bullit Train in California. That is money down the drain!!! California is bankrupt and can never repay the "loan" (I guess it is really a donation or "sympathy money"). Not only that, I doubt California can afford the upkeep once completed. And finding people who could safely run the system, another big problem. Look for as many accidents as Amtrack.

All that 9/11 stuff about a Muslim mosque in NY near WTC sounds like Nero fiddling while Rome burned. Americans have much more serious problems to worry about than this. It is a tempest in a teapot (or really a tempest in a thimble). Nobody should care.
