It impresses me that even after the obviously horrendous treatment by Japanese soldiers during the war, only a little over 2 decades later, his family hosted a Japanese student in their home. It reminds me that for decades the Pearl Harbor survivors and the Japanese pilots who bombed them meet every few years to play baseball together in Hawaii or Japan. I get the impression there may be hope for the human race. It is truly crappy that Japanese companies involved won't get involved, but I guess they will say "Well, I wasn't there" or they want to avoid the negative PR.

sarahsuz25, if all this is true, then it looks like it the the press that is looking for a story that will generate headlines and viewers and readers. Maybe the problem is the press trying to find a simple story that lots of dumbed-down people will easily understand and then it is the press taht makes money. Maybe the attention given to this guy is a just symptom.

My reading is that this pastor has an ego soooo biiiig that he wants a lot of media attention for his church of 15, and the price that has to be paid for his 15 minutes of fame is the deaths of US military in Afganistan and Iraq, which will inevidibly follow in the wake of his Koran burning.

Now lets not be skeptical. Paris Hilton has more purses than Emalda Marcos has shoes. Of course, you can't expect her to remember all of her purses. She could have easily been confused. Another article said she thought the bag of cocaine was a gun. Yeah, I can see how your could mistake those two.

For 20 years the US blithely criticized Japan for its actions after the burst of the bubble in 1990-1991. Now the same thing happens there, and look how fast they pulled out the Japanese play book. What happened the "constructive destruction", let the banks fail, etc. etc. etc. mantras they preached to the Japanese? Nope, took out the Japanse playbook real fast.

Everyone please note that according to this information, it is only THIS quarter that China exceeded Japan. You can't say China's economy is larger than Japan's until the end of the year, which they may if they exceed Japan for the other 2 quarters.

First, who is Justin Beiber? What is CSI? And what does this have to do with Japan?

First, of course, most of the participants probably "look" terribly "normal" (like me). That won't sell pictures (especially if it is me). It is the photographer who searches out the most flamboyant looking ones for their photos. That gets comments! They do the same thing when reporting the San Francisco or NY gay pride parages.
I see Lady GAGA is in this year! She is our latest gay hero, of course, for those of you who don't know (and really, I don't think she is a boy). Go to any 2-chome bar and you can see the Lady on the TV.

Those of us who have been around a while remember that Japan Tabaco used to run a hospital in Minato ward called the Senbai Byouin ("Monopoly Hospital"). They could make money getting people sick and make money trying to cure them. They were getting it both ways. The hospital was pretty mismanaged (maybe it got stuck in hypocracy) and they sold it to a university.

MistWizard, well, at least it wasn't deleted this time (thanks JT - it is a legitimate point). Whether certain people like it or not, there is a link: historically, many leaders of the early gay liberation movement in the 60s, both white and black, were veterans of the civil rights movement in the south. They were the "freedom riders" who drove into the south from the north to promote integration, and then applied some of the same techniques to the gay movement in the 60s and 70s.

The main reason straights are so down on homosexuality is that it is the one "sin" they will not commit. All those other sins like pornography, adultry, self-abuse and all those 10 commandments etc., they commit every day.

Back in the 50s when the courts were dismantelling all the jim crow laws (laws that segregared blacks, for you younger people), supporters of segregation would have called the judges "activist" for ramming integration down their throats, if they had had the word "activist judge" and the like. The same with sex discrimination. Or age discrimination. And now gay marriage. Sometimes the courts have to do the unpopular thing and force the masses away from evil.

OK, this is completely off topic, but since Jackie Chan is standing there, whatever happened to his movie "Shinjuku Incident"? I live in Shinjuku, and it has not played in any theaters here (unless it was for one day, and I missed it). I wanted to see all the familiar places in a movie.
I liked Karate Kid, back when I was a kid. As they said, "Best Kid" is a kid movie, not "Valley of the Dolls".

This is a good thing, or the unintended consequences of a good thing. The drug war is getting intense because, according to a news story I read recently, cocaine use has dropped 75% in the US since the 80s, and these cartels are fighting for the last bit of the remaining market. I'm afraid of what it may be like when it drops to 95%.

This is China's era or "rising expectations". The Chinese government should really have tried to share the wealth. One thing the government knows: when Chinese are unhappy, they have a revolution.
