I'm going to eat as many carrots as I want. Those third world natins should just get their act together.

That's funny. I agree with everything mushroomcloud said. Bite my tongue. All the same, make sure to separate the government from the people, who I have always found very kind, friendly, and interested in Japan. Last I was in China it was before the island incident, and I'm not scheduled to go until late next year. By that time, all of this will probably have blown over. Also, I do hear that Japamese companies in China can avail themselves of rare earths, so it may be a ploy to get more Japanese companies into China, and the accompanying technology transfer. But Japanese have already started developing and announced rare earth-free eco-friendly technologies.

At some point the Chinese government will start to listen to all the Chinese companies that depend on components using rare earths that only Japanese can make. If these components stop arriving: the end. Only nationalists are sold on the idea China doesn't need anyone.

People were saying the same thing back in the 80s. They would point to the Takenokozoku and the Bosozoku dancing at Yoyogi, and say there lies the future of Japan. Much like they do with the costume players that have replaced them. There are plenty of young and ambitious people where I work (including me). Mr. Kan is being preposterous (and I know there are people hurting here).

One thing is wonder about is whether this follows him anywhere. Or is it a case of what happens in Japan stays in Japan.

He got off lightly because Japan suddenly feels the need for the US protection.

Probably China will just complain that the Japanese boat was in "Chinese territorial waters". Don't wait for a thank you.

The Chinese should embrace the Shanghai idea. In their mad dash to become number one, they are destroying much of their natural resources, and as anyone who has been to a major city in China, or even minor ones, they are poluting themselves to death. Chinese polution has even shown up in Japan and Washington state in the US.
PS According to friends in China, there was a 6 hour wait at the Japanese pavilion even during the hight of the "crisis".

Pasona has always been out in front. They had a chain of clamb chowder restaurants in the early 90s (one at Jewel Bld. in Nishi Azabu). The company is a real mash-up. In a good sense. With the deregulation of employment rules under Koizumi, they got really rich.

Can someone comment on this. When I was in China a few years ago, I was told that the Chinese government had greatly expanded sections in textbooks on WWI about the war against Japan in order to support the legitimacy of the Communist Party. Is this new education feeding anti-Japanese feeling in China? I don't read Chinese so I couldn't confirm it myself.

What is the use of having an anti-Japanese demonstration where nobody will hear about it? It sounds like "anti-Japanese" is only a front for demonstrating about other things, things that should worry the Chinese government. You can't sell Chinese labor to be exploited by the US, Japan, and Europe at low, low wages (causing some to commit suicide) and not expect some blowback. I'd say the Chinese government is the real target, and they know it.

Actually, could someone explain what Hooters is? Everyone seems to know, but it is not common knowledge here. Is it like Denny's? Or more like a "fashion health" club (that is, "touchy-feely club") in Kabukicho? Since I'm totally gay, I won't be going there to look at women, but if the food has an American taste...

This will never work. It is not nearly, what's the word, I don't want to use "perverted", but the right one doesn't come to mind. Let's say, Hooters does not have the fetishistic twist that would make this kind of thing work in Japan.
