"if Japan had not invaded China, China would still be ruled by white people", and i forgot to add that Japan would be ruled by white people because the next stop after China was Japan, in the person of Commadore Mathew Perry. The whole point of Japanese modernization is to keep from being taken over by white men, like China and the rest of the world.

The only reason the Japanese joined with Germany is because they thought Germany was going to win the war, and then Japan would get all of the British and French territories in China. The reason they joined with the US and Britian in WWI is because they thought Germany would loose and Japan would get Germany's territories in China. The US and UK even gave hints to the Japanese that this would happen, but it didn't. One reason for Japan not to trust US and UK anymore. Japan acts for pragmatic purposes only, not idealistic ones. And after all, if Japan had not invaded China, China would still be ruled by white people.

Just for the record, I am very dissatisfied with my Dynabook TX/67J2YD. In particular, the cursor tends to jump randomly while typing, in serting text where it should not be. While typind email, the email suddenly close. And loads of bothersome other problems. The next machine will definitely not be a Dynabook, or any other Toshiba for that matter.

@blobalwatcher That is a great JFK quote. Too bad George Bush didn't know about it. (sorry for being off topic)

So who took the photo? Why was someone just happened to be standing around with a camera to snap a photo? Who gave the photo to the media?
Moderator: The photo is from Reuters.

All countries have their lunatic fringe, both Japan and China. Most people don't care about the issue. Yawn....

@aj201, you obviously have never been to Japan. Do you realize how different each of the things you list is from Chinese ones? Japanese always take from anyone and make it better!
We need to emphasize what Ricardo45 says and what I said. Everyday Chinese are really nice people. I've been to China many times and I know. They are very nice to Japanese people. There are only a few lunatics who are anti-Japanese. It is only the government you have to worry about, and Chinese people have no control over the government.

Did you see NHK news this afternoon? It showed loads of Chinese going into the Japanese department stores this morning. It also showed that not only Japanese businesses, but neighboring Chinese businesses were damaged. Those students don't throw stones very well.
NOBODY cares about this except a few lunatics (both Chinese and Japanese) who have nothing and no future. Tomogami is also a lunatic.

The Chinese reported that there were 2000 demonstrators. That's all? Just 2000? That is hardly a respectable number of demonstrators. Also, notice that the Japanese department stores attacked were full of Chinese customers, who had to be guided out the back for safety. There were more Chinese customers in the Japanese department stores than Chinese in the demonstration!!! Somebody forgot to tell these Chinese customers that they are supposed to hate Japan. Everyday Chinese don't care about the issue, just like everyday Japanese don't care about the issue.

Well, with all that speed, it does seem that he would have easily been able to avoid the collision if so desired. Big, heavy wailing ships just can't maneouver that fast.

When I went through Japanese university in the early 90s, we all knew that corporate research facilities were the true repositories of knowledge, not universities. However, in the early 90s there was a significant rearranging of universities, including the way funds are distributed between undergrad and grad school, so maybe this changed.

So what was all that talk of Japan sinking into irrelevance? Japanese have won quite a string of Nobel Prizes the past few years. What is strange about that is Japanese don't do very much of the type of basic research that gets Nobel Prizes. Japanese research is directed towards ultimate commercial application.

What is the rent? These services apartments in my neighborhood run a minimum of 500,000 yen per month for about 40 sequare meters. No don't live there.

@presto345 We'll put it back when they stop hitting us over the head with the "Japanese killed 30 million Chinese". I wasn't there. How are we supposed to react? Vomit? Hate all Japanese? As someone said above, nationalism is rooted in victimization.

Do you see that strange looking building on the far left of the picture? That is the Humax Building. It houses a Disney Shop on the first floor. It is Chinese owned. Do they know that?

This demonstration seems to be larger than the anti-Japanese demonstration in front of the Japanese Embassy in Beijing. Even the Chinese press (People's Daily) said it was only about 100 people. My impression from what I hear from friends in China is that the public is mostly ignoring the whole issue. The Japanese supermarket Ito Yokado in North Beijing is still crowded, and the Japanese pavillion at the Shanghai Expo still has a waiting time of 6 hours.

According to what I have read the reason for the great increase in violence is that American consumption of cocaine has fallen about 70% over the past decade or so, and there is an intense fight for the small remaining market. Well, maybe Paris Hilton can help to popularize the drug again. (Of course, it wasn't her purse...)

Let's be honest. Why are Chinese upset? They let Europeans take over their country, and then that little country to the East (Japan) walked in and took over. This drove a deep nail into their pride. And what we all know, it wasn't China but Japan who first defeated a western army (Russia), giving hope to all the people of Asia. Japan never let itself be taken over by another country! That is what Chinese don't like. China still feels shame.

Japan Wins!!!!
Today, in his National Foundation Day speech, Premier Wen actually had to explicitly say that China is not a threat to anyone. I guess he finally understood what the Japanese have always understood: how the world perceives the situation. China has been condemned universally. China may be right about the islands or the company employees in restricted military area, but that does not matter. China's reaction is what the world focussed on: it was from the 19th century, not the 21st century. China made itself look scary. (apologies for the cross-posting)
