Hamas, the government of the Palestinian people in Gaza, went looking for this fight by launching thousands of rockets at Israeli civilians (something like 6,000 since their election in 2007) and now Hamas is getting a well deserved punch in the mouth for it. Those in the international community who call for a ceasefire are basically condoning rocket attacks on Israeli civilians.

I don't blame the Israelis a bit. It's easy enough for European powers to sit back and call for Israel to stop the operation against Hamas. The Europeans, of course, don't have to live with thousands of rocket attacks against their citizens. If they did, I have no doubt they'd be singing a different tune. Case in point: Egypt. Egypt who also shares a border with Gaza and, surprisingly enough, sides with Israel in this and has closed down its border with Gaza as well. A point glossed over by Hamas apologists who use the closed border with Israel as justification to try and kill civilians -- not Egyptian, of course, never know if they'd try as hard to avoid civilian casualties, just Israeli -- never considering the fact that it was the rocket attacks against Israel which led to the border closure in the first place.

Hamas apologists baffle me. They think that firing thousands of rockets into civilian areas in Israel shouldn't led to a response, get mad when the response is a closure of the border, and then use the "blockade" to justify more rockets at Israel, all the while ignoring the fact that Egypt is doing the exact same thing on their Gaza border.

Good for Israel. Hamas has been asking for this punch in the mouth for a long time.

    Wolfpack:

Well, the problem with this argument is that Arab countries blew it by attacking and threatening Israel since the day of their lawful creation by the United Nations. If they were not attacked, Israel would not be "occupying" land that was not originally authorized to them by the UN.

No kidding. Everyone cries about '67 borders but never stops to consider why those borders came into existence. Israel has been invaded again and again by its Arab neighbors -- wars that had they lost there's no doubt they would have been massacred to the last man (How do we know this? Because the Arabs said as much when they announced their intention to drive every last Jew into the sea) -- Too bad for the Arabs, Israel won ever one of those wars and seized territory in the process.

Israel is under no obligation to return territory seized during a defensive war. It'd be like telling the Chinese to give Manchuko back to the Japanese.

But guess what? Israel did give Gaza to the former Egyptians (that's right, there's never been a state known as "Palestine") -- and what did they get for it? The election of Hamas and thousands of rockets into Israeli cities.

Now Hamas is getting a well deserved punch in the mouth for their rocket attacks. I say good on the Israelis. Kill every last member of Hamas and start from zero. If the next Palestinian government launches rockets, do the same to them.

Cry me a river. When Hamas stops firing rockets at civilians and sending suicide bombers to blow up school buses in Israel, then they might have a point.

    itcher:

Israel is bombing the Gaza Egypt border and making sure Egypt does not open up the border. It is an Israeli occupation so it is Israel which control the border with Egypt. Egypt is not occupying Gaza.

Neither is Israel. It evicted all the Jews from Gaza in 2005.

By the way, as the article points out, Egypt closed its border with Gaza after Hamas took power in June 2007. So, unless Israel's been bombing it continuously since then, your point about Israel forcing Egypt to keep the border closed makes no sense.

    From the article:

Egypt, which has served as a mediator between Israel and the Palestinians as well as between Hamas and its rival Fatah, has been criticized for joining Israel in closing its borders with Gaza. The blockade was imposed immediately after the Hamas takeover in June 2007.

I'm not sure why this is particularly complicated. Hamas denies Israel's right to exist. They've vowed to drive the Jews into the sea. They've launched thousands of rockets at Israeli civilians and have been doing so long before they were elected in June 2007. The only thing that's different this time is that after repeated warnings to halt the rocket attacks, they're getting a well deserved punch in the mouth for not doing so. The only way this could complicate things for Obama is if he plans to reverse his previous statements affirming Israel's right to self-defense.

Mr.shiuu I am not ignorring the fact of Egyption border. If you are following the news you will see that Israel has made agreements with Egypt to close these borders too. Israeli officials made many visits to Egypt regarding this matter.

In other words, when Egypt closes it border with Gaza, it's not really Egypt's fault because Israel made them?

Ha. Ha. Ha. Israel controls Egypt's foreign policy? Riiiiiight. Pull the other one.

Thanks, shams. Your example of the lengths people will go to excuse Arabs and blame Israel for the exact same act is hilarious.

    shams:

Israel was controlling the entrances of Gaza and prevented even medical assistance from going in.

    From the article:

With the two-day death toll nearing 300 Sunday, crowds of Gazans breached the border wall with Egypt to escape the chaos. Egyptian forces, some firing in the air, tried to push them back into Gaza and an official said one border guard was killed.

Shams, you (and every other Hamas apologist) seem to ignore the border Gaza shares with Egypt. Why is that? Is the Egyptian border not closed? If closed, why is it that Hamas launches all of its rockets into Israel and never into Egypt? If not closed, why do people like you claim a "blockade" by Israel?

While we're on the subject, why is it that a closed border with Israel is viewed as justification for rocket attacks against Israeli civilians but those rocket attacks are never sufficient justification for air-strikes by Israel against Hamas?

As noted above, there are no Jews in Gaza. "Palestinians" can govern it however they please. If their government (Hamas) keeps them in crappy living conditions to score polical points, they only have themselves to blame. The Palestinians are deservedly going to get their clocks cleaned if they keep launching rockets into Israel.

I don't really understand the "occupation/blockade of Gaza therefore Israel bad" meme.

First, as I recall, Israel threw out all the Jews who lived in Gaza and give it to the Palestinians who, rather than working to improve the economy, promptly set out to wreck any evidence of Jewish residence (ruining many possible sources of income in the process) and turned it into a rocket-launching platform to rain thousands of rockets down on Israeli cities. Not exactly the sort of thing I'd expect an "occupying power" to tolerate.

Second, since Gaza shares a border with Egypt, how is it that Israel any blame for closing its border with Gaza after they elected Hamas -- you know, the guys who make no secret of their goal to destroy Israel?

The Israeli reaction seems both logical and necessary.

Not so fun being on the receiving end is it, Gaza? Maybe you should have thought of that before allowing Hamas to fire thousands of rockets into Israeli cities.

Not so much fun being on the receiving end, is it Gaza? Perhaps you should have thought of that before letting Hamas launch thousands of rockets into Israeli cities.

As I noted above, if I were in charge of Israel, I'd skip the land operation and just park artillery on the boarder. Why bother trying to avoid civilian casualties with pinpoint air-strikes when the Arab world and their apologists are just going to accuse you of targeting civilians anyway?

 I suspected something like this as soon as Gaza elected Hamas. I'm just surprised Israel waited as long as they did given the number of rocket attacks.

If I were the leader of Israel, I'd pass on the ground assault and park artillery on the Gaza boarder then for every subsequent rocket attack I'd lob 50 rounds of 155mm back.

As Altria noted above, something tells me the publishers won't be giving the book away. Just as I'm certain that 99.9% of modern day Marxist apologists wouldn't last a week under "true" Marxism if they really had to share all their labor and worldly possessions with their fellow man.
