Two reasons this story is unintentionally amusing:
1) the first people the investigators thought to question were apparently fellow police officers
2) even with a key, the idiot police lieutenant couldn't manage to get inside the house

Japanese contractors will likely use this as an opportunity to charge more for their "200 year" houses using the same crappy materials and designs (and bribes) they use on the 20-year models. Of course, when the whole thing comes falling apart 180 years earlier than expected, they'll be long gone.
