The positioning of the "Laser Hair Removal Machines" ad (Ads by Google) immediately under this article was good for my first laugh of the morning!!
That, and "sexual realignment surgery." What is he, a car?!?!?!

Too bad there's no mention of the pioneering chain Ezogiku, which has served completely authentic Sapporo-style ramen at multiple shops in Hawaii and Vancouver (and now L.A.) for almost 40 years.
(The company may get more attention again in Japan now that its venerable main branch in the Waseda area has a brand-new subway station right across the street from it. Still, they've always steered away from high-end foodie glamour).

Which means, of course, that we won't see them on the NRT-HNL route anytime soon... :-/
Just as well, it would remind me too much of flying off in the cubicle I use at work.

Well, aside from the lousy translation, good luck with keeping the theater brilliantly, immaculately white. Spilled caramel corn, catsup, cola, and beer will provide work for what I'm sure will be an army of damp-rag wielding part-timers.

Reputation my foot.
They go about their business as usual, everyone perfectly aware that this one incident will have about as much effect on their reputation as a gnat hitting your windshield will have on your driving.

According to Madonna's personal chef (who is Japanese, and was interviewed on another SMAP-connected program, Katori Shingo's "SMA-Station"), she loved the food they cooked for her, and still requests some of the dishes be included in her regular diet. I agree she did look a bit frosty during her first appearance, but she seemed to warm up a bit, at least with Shingo, in later promotional outings with the "boys". In terms of star power, of course, they look at her as being practically from another planet, which is maybe why their shtick always feels a bit more forced than usual when Madonna is around.

If it was a mobile blog site, as opposed to a bulletin board or a place to post comments, like this one, it is unlikely a moderator would have been around in the first place; only other readers of the blog (and that's assuming there were any) would have had access to the content, thus rendering the "if only" argument moot. He might as well have been muttering to himself in the dark.

Given the issues with Japanese language input, and the fact that the novelty of the touch screen is kind of moot in this market now (thanks to Apple's own i-touch model iPod and touch-screen phones from other manufacturers), I think the "wow" factor has pretty much been diluted by now, at least for Japanese users. Services and pricing plans will be the key--can Softbank successfully port all of the data, media, and application services it provides on its other phones to the iPhone platform???

This may be a rhetorical question, but why exactly is enka so excoriated by JT posters anyway?

I find using "gaijin" to refer to myself both diffuses any racist overtones while simultaneously pointing them up to any "clueless" Japanese people I might be with, kind of like the way gay men call themselves "queer" and (some) African-Americans use the "n" word.

It's hard to see how this is an improvement, except perhaps in terms of being slightly more nutritous and possibly a little cheaper for the airline. Having flown JAL to Honolulu at least once a month for the past three years, my guess is that almost anything would be an improvement over the food they've been serving in economy class.
The airlines are squeezed between sky-high fuel prices and the demands of a flying public for lower airfares. This is an untenable and unsustainable proposition for any business, much less one with the complexity of an airline. Either they maintain services and raise prices dramatically, losing seat-miles in the process, or they try to respond to demand by keeping prices lower and cutting services proportionately. Either way, they'll find themselves awash in red ink.
So the question becomes, is it even possible to sustain an independant (i.e. free of government ownership/subsidy), affordable, profitable, quality airline in today's market?

Jero's a self-admitted geek, but he is without question a TALENTED geek. And I applaud this article for at least headlining him as an "American" singer, unlike most of the Japanese media, which insists on referring to him as the "Black enka singer," as though his color has something to do with the phenomenon of his popularity.
Jero will be the first non-Asian enka singer to appear in the year-end Red and White song contest (a program of dubious value these days, but still a significant milestone...).

This is at least the third article on JT I've seen using the nonsensical word "comfortability."
"Comfort" should be sufficient in almost any case I can think of. "Comfortable" may be grammatically appropriate in the rest.
Cummon JT, let's bring some improved perfectionability to our editing... :)
