God forbid those horrid blankets-with-sleeves should take off here like they did in the U.S.
(Japan, come to think of it, already has its own futon-with-sleeves...)

It's not only the Shibuya boutiques--sales staff at the major department stores have it at least as bad. Just more of Japan Inc. trying to save its collective necks on the backs of its workers.

Great to see Taku back in action! Let's hope his aggressive driving style works to his advantage in this new environment, and that all the Southern cooking doesn't ruin his perfect physique!

It typically takes the major "city" bank at which I've had a business account for more than five years at least 45 minutes to process an overseas wire transfer to an account to which I've been making such transfers for several years. They claim it's because I'm making the transaction at a branch other than the one at which I opened my account. Hello??? Aren't their branches connected by something called DATABASE SOFTWARE??
Even the ATMs at convenience stores, which I resort to despite the additional transaction charges because neither of my banks have branches in walking distance from where I live, have recently started restricting their hours of operation...
Hello!?!? Do they need to give the little man inside the machine who stuffs the cash out the slot a break at night???
The focus has been so intensely on technology (ATMs that print passbook transactions, turn the pages, and issue new passbooks, in addition to accepting coins, which to my knowledge, ATMs in the US still can't do), that ironically they've completely divorced technology from service (the multi-part forms in triplicate required for internet banking).
The passive Japanese consumer loses again.

Actually it's being implemented on most international routes, including to the U.S. and Europe. The article notes that some Asian routes will be EXCLUDED (mainly because of smaller, less flexible aircraft configurations).

And Toshiba's new HDD DVD machines have as many as SIX tuners (2 each for terrestrial, BS, and cable) AND let you dump recorded programs from external hard disk drives (connected to the tv) to BR disks in HD.
Think I'll stick w/Toshiba on this one.

Apropos of nothing, Patrick Chan's eyes are disturbing. And watch out four years from now for that wonder kid from Kazakhstan, Denis Ten. Talk about an underdog, but he's done great for a 16-year-old, and shows such promise.

Oda is definitely the more solid jumper of the two, but there is no way he can outperform Takahashi on artistic terms.
Don't know about the Americans or Europeans--but the Japan team is straight arrows all the way! ;^p

Errr... that's "Eye" by Coba... :) Daisuke was looking good, and in fact did beat Plushenko in component (artistic expression, etc.) points. If (and it's a big if) he can pull of his quad tomorrow, he should be in position for a medal. Not bad for someone who spent the past year rebuilding his knee.

"none"???? "...peculiar to the special Japanese spirit..."???? This is such a huge myth. While much about the Japanese language is entwined with the country's culture, society, and history, it is no more unfathomable than any other language.
Imagine these English teachers telling their students "Well, I can't really help you because you don't understand the special American (or English, or whatever) spirit..."
Whew, talk about living up to your chosen handle.

While I agree with many of Mr. Rogers' points, if I were a customer, I don't know that I would want to entrust my English language training to a company whose owner writes so poorly.

And good luck figuring out what will be shown when--practically every broadcaster has a piece of the Winter Olympics, making it a real headache to try to record favorite events to watch later. Nakai is annoying but they could've done worse.

The difference being, of course, that in the U.S. (I don't know about other countries), phones are typically assigned to a specific desk/person (each person having their own extension, and answering only their own calls), while in Japan at most companies (while individual direct numbers are more common than they used to be), it's not unusual to have phones assigned to a group of desks or section, such that everyone has to act as a switchboard, picking up the phone for everyone in that section. Still, given that this is the norm, there's no excuse for not learning one's job, even if it involves answering the phone for other people.

And keep in mind that barely a year ago, the cheapest LED bulbs of this sort on the market were going for more than 8,000 yen each. These are a good investment (not necessarily better, from a recycling point of view, than fluorescents, except that they require replacement less frequently), and I plan to start replacing my existing incandescent bulbs with LED versions as each one burns out...

"Hotchkiss" comes from E.H. Hotchkiss, a U.S.-based company from which the stationary firm Itoki imported the first staplers to Japan in the mid-Meiji period (and not, as urban legend has it, from B.B. Hotchkiss, an engineer responsible for designing several types of revolving cannons and other weapons, though the two gentlemen were contemporaries and may have been cousins).

It would be very tough to maintain a career as an announcer while marrying into a multi-generation Kabuki family, which involves as much work for the wife as it does for the husband.
And they do look like a happy couple, I hope Ebizo gets his act together on the personal front as much as he has in his professional life!
