I think one of the Tochigi murders was the Ashikaga case in 1991 where the wrong guy was forced to confess and spent 17 years in prison before having his conviction overturned last year. That must have been like a knife in the heart of the parents, thinking their daughter's killer had been caught and imprisoned and despising him all that time, only to realize that the real killer is still at large.

I think that in Japan, everything has to be announced officially. So the summer doesn't "officially" begin until the meteorological agency "officially" declares the rainy season over. Weird, isn't it?

My favorite yakitori places are the ones near the elevated train tracks at Yurakucho in Tokyo.

I just started my Columbo DVD festival last night. The shows hold up remarkably well, despite the 1970s cars and fashions. Just proves that good storytelling never goes out of date.

Farewell Mr Falk. You gave me and will continue to give me hundreds of hours of entertainment. If there is a heaven, I'd say right about now, you are pestering St Peter and asking him "What did you pay for the shoes?"

Great musical. I'm glad more foreign entertainers starting to come back to Japan.

She must be a circus performer to be able to walk in those shoes.

I'd like to see someone wear that balloon dress on the Yamanote line during rush hour.

I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often. People make a mad dash to get into the train before the doors close (I do it myself). Why don't WE just wait for the next train?

I hope she makes inquiries about how the $3 million she donated to quake victims is being used.

I still don't see why this company's existence bothers Cleo and Mr Dog. As I understand it from the story, they are translating things like apps, new product info and so on.

Resenting competitors, if they are in fact your competitors, should be beneath your dignity.

I think you can offer top translations and not charge astronomical fees. I haven't used myGengo but they seem to be doing well, so good luck to them. It seems like some readers, who fancy themselves as translators, might be miffed.

I saw a bit of this press conference on TV. If I understood it correctly, Terawaki was trying to say that the destruction the people of Atlanta must have gone through when Sherman came, must have been similar to how people in tsunami-hit regions felt.

Usually any scene where you can predict well in advance what is going to happen. Why do directors feel they have to lead us down the path? Specifically, I hate romantic comedies where the guy and woman always end up together. Why can't just for once, the woman tell the guy, "Sorry, you're not my type. Please don't call me again."

In monster movies, whenever someone wanders off alone and you just know they are going to get picked off. This happened, most recently in "Super 8." I don't know how many times I said to a character, "OK, you heard a noise outside. But it's dark, so don't go out to investigate." But, no, the dummy has to have a look.

I find it weird that so many people can't go a day without their cell phones. I grew up in an era when there were no cell phones, Blackberrys, Internet, email, iPods, etc. We managed just fine. We were just as busy, but our lives didn't revolve around gadgets. But then I guess my parents and grandparents said the same thing about TVs.

It'll be interesting to see if investors do get noisy. Most Japanese companies' shareholders' meetings are incredibly boring and long-winded. Investors rarely ask questions. When I first came to Japan, the police were there to ward off the "sokaiya" hoods who would disrupt meetings and put the CEO on the spot by harassing him with repetitive questions. Now the cops will have to protect the CEO from angry shareholders.

Posted in: It’s going to be a stormy meeting. The meeting will likely continue for hours and hours as individual investors will have a lot to say.

I'd say Amway has cleaned up their act, at least in Japan. I heard a lot of negative stories about them in the 1990s but I know some distributors in Japan and they do not use pressure or underhanded tactics. According to this story, there are more than 700,000 distributors, so I would say they are doing quite well - both Amway and distributors.
