Kaleb is the man. The Quincy Jones tribute was outstanding.

It bothers you, does it, that other guys (and some girls?) find Yu Yamada attractive? No one has "so low sense of taste," as you put it. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I'd vote for JFK, not because he achieved a lot politically in his short presidency, but because he embodied the hopes of an entire generation. His death changed the destiny of the nation and the lives of so many.

Sometimes I think that Japan is becoming a nation of softies. It is not even cold yet and I see young women everywhere wearing scarves and gloves. In the office, they are already putting blankets over their knees while seated at their desks.
Some of the suggestions in this story are ludicrous. Sleeping with a towel around one's neck?
Toughen up ladies. A little bit of cold won't hurt you.

I wonder how The Donald feels about a love hotel called Trump Tower.
This is a strange case. There seem to have been two men with her. Who was the guy who called 119 and who was the guy seen knocking on her door earlier in the night?

I saw this on NHK last night and one rice grower was saying that he wouldn't be able to compete against foreign rice which would be nearly 50% cheaper. I wanted to ask him why is Japanese rice so expensive. Consumers never seem to question why fruit and vegetable prices are so high in Japan.

I must be one of the few readers on JT who pays the NHK fee. I like some of their programs - the bilingual news, their excellent nature documentaries and some good overseas documentaries. I found it essential viewing in the aftermath of the March 11 disaster.

It's probably true. In many countries, there are shady business practices that a foreign executive would find questionable but which the locals accept as a routine business practice, such as payoffs etc. I wonder why Olympus appointed a foreign CEO in the first place. The board must have known that he would want to shake things up.
A similar fate happened to the Shinsei Bank American CEO a few years ago, I recall.
I also wonder if Carlos Ghosn and Howard Stringer had any similar problems when they took over at Nissan and Sony.
If I became the CEO of a Japanese company, I think my first order of business would be to change the board of directors, though that is probably not as easy as it sounds.
Posted in: Do you think that the problem unfolding at Olympus is a difference in perception of how business is done in Japan? For example, could deals that ousted British CEO Michael Woodford considered dubious, be thought of as normal business practices by Japanese executives?

There will be people lined up for two hours, even at night, at that ticket booth in Nishi-Ginza, once the tickets go on sale, only because someone bought the winning ticket from there years ago.

I think they could start the illuminations a bit later than normal, maybe Dec 1 instead of early November.
I understand the reasons, though. Last year, a restaurant manager at Tokyo Midtown told me that when the illumination is there, people come to see it and while they are there, they spend money in shops and restaurants. So I guess the economy needs these displays.
Posted in: Do you think Christmas illuminations should be displayed in Japan's cities this year or should they be canceled or curtailed in order to save electricity?

I use about 5% of the functions on my cell phone, maybe even less. I use it just for making and receiving calls. I think I have sent only about two emails this year. So, yes, I'd have to say they have too many functions for me.
